Track and Field Prepare for 2013

Coach Rita Williams returns to the helm of the Cardinal track and field program with a greater familarity with the Ireton track landscape.  Once again assisted by Glen Evelyn and Brad Byrnes, the team has a full schedule of mid-Atlantic meets, highlighted by their visit to the historic Penn Relays in Philadelphia.

The Cardinals have a large, if young squad for 2013, with over 70 student-athletes actively participating and 30% of those from the freshmen class and more than half participating in their first track & field season.  This youth does not necessarily mean the Alexandria school is short of talent.  Coach Byrnes  see  some promising mid-distance runners in Isabelle Wilcox and Capri Puglise on the girls side and for the boys returning members Duke Roach, Michael  Logrande join rookie Aaron Ault.

Coach Evelyn’s sprint unit on the girls’ side has returnee Nicole Bond , who is listed as the #1 returner in the 200m for Virginia private schools,  and Ireton will sprinkle in rookies Gabrielle Hall,  Stephanie Lin , and letterwinner Ileana Gutierrez.    On the boys side, Brandon Williams-Price and Antony Mondragon are the foundation of the sprint lineup.  They are joined by a number of new faces, including Paul Poling, Chris Lantz, Nick Knezevich, Patrick Reilly, and Sean Hurd just to mention a few.  The Cardinals’ field events participants include  thrower Weslie Young and Isabel Parks, and for boys Owen Beals, John Holbrook, and Joshua Estevez.

Head coach Williams is smiling more this season and just waiting for when it all comes together.  The outdoor track program invites all to come and support;  see how hard the athletes work to represent BI, by attending their 1st annual intra squad meet on Monday April 8 immediately after school.
