Mustangs edge Cardinals 57-52 in girls hoops Friday

Junior Mara Celis had a season high 20, including 5 3’s, in 57-52 setback Friday.

Bishop McNamara is a WCAC heavyweight tea, and was coming off a big win over Holy Cross, but Bishop Ireton out scrapped, hustled, and battled for four quarters before falling 57-52 in Alexandria Friday night.

Junior Mara Celis led the Cardinals with 20 points, including 5 from beyond the arc,  while Camille Weber added 11. Jasmine Boyd led all scorers with 21 and hauled down 12 rebounds for Bishop McNamara. The difference in the game turned at the free throw line, where McNamara claimed 13 of 15 while Ireton managed only 5 of 11.

The Mustangs owned a slim 14-13 lead after one and held on for a 27-26 advantage going to the locker room at halftime, battling back from a 21-14 deficit as the Cardinals ran off 8 unanswered points early in the second period. Dreu Wilkins pulled the visitors even at 23-23 and the seesaw battle continued into the second half.

McNamara bolted from the locker room to take a 31-26 lead early only to see Ireton counterattack with a 10-0 run to go up 36-31 on a Helena Barber layup.  Carrie Alexander drained a pair of free throws for the visitors, however, with 5:40 remaining in the game to knot the contest at 46.  A pair of turnovers by Ireton proved costly however, and the Mustangs took advantage of the opportunity to grab a 55-49 advantage as time raced off the clock. Celis hit her last of 5 three-pointers with :51 remaining in the game to pull Ireton to the 57-52, the final tally  as neither squad could score in the game’s closing moments.

No time for rest for the redbirds as they reload for a non conference game with Flint Hill at 3:45 Saturday, then host rival Bishop O’Connell Monday in a tripleheader, freshmen at 12pm, JV at 1:45, varsity at 3:30.  With the loss on Friday, Bishop Ireton fell to 4-12 on the season, 0-7 in the WCAC while the Mustangs improved to 11-4, 4-3 in the conference.

Cardinals overcome Ryken 74-65 in OT

St John's visits Bishop Ireton Friday, Dec 23rd, 7:30pm tipoff

Bishop Ireton evened its WCAC record at 2-2 and advanced to 9-4 overall with a gutty 74-65 home win on Friday over St Mary’s Ryken (3-9,0-5).  It was the Cardinals’ third straight win and fifth in last seven games.

The game featured a lightning quick squad from Leonardtown, lead by K. Smith who poured in a game-high 31 points for the Knights, and a bigger, more balanced Ireton squad who ended with four players in double figures.  In the end, the tightly contested game came down to more balance from the Cardinals in front of a strong home crowd that bouyed the host squad down the stretch.

The game started slowly in the contest’s opening minutes as Ireton jumped to a 6-2 lead before the visiting Knights laid an 11-2 run on the redbirds to take a 15-11 lead after one period. Coach Neil Berkman responded with full court pressure and the Noe brothers made back-to-back jumpers to give Ireton a 17-15 lead early in the second period.

Ryken pulled back in front and the clubs battled throughout the remainder of the quarter exchanging leads, the visitors hitting from long distance and Ireton battling inside as well as from beyond the 3-point arc.  The half ended with the teams knotted at 31.

The third period continued tightly contested and the lead seesawed back and forth as a 43-42 Ireton lead melted into a 48-47 deficit as the final period began.

K. Smith, who had 20 after 3 quarters, began to battle cramps as well as the Cardinals.  He pounded Ireton with the consecutive long balls to give Ryken a 56-52 lead with 5:17 to play. Smith was “bombs away” as the game continued, putting the blue-clad squad up 61-56 with two minutes remaining.

Dav’on Wiley made a pair of free throws, Ireton went to the “line” 36 times, making 25, while the Knights had only 8 opportunities, making 4.  Wiley was back on the charity stripe with :52.6 left and his free throws closed the gap to 63-61.  Patrick Moseh, a sophomore, also sparked the Cards off the bench scoring 13 in the second half to spark the 4th period comeback.

With the gym roaring, the Cardinals played their best defense of the evening  coming out of a timeout to force a 35-second shot clock violation, giving the home team possession with :10 to play.  Once again, as the clock raced down, sophomore Dan Noe coolly slipped around a defender and dropped in a layup with :00.8 to play, tying the contest at 63.

Both squads struggled in the overtime, Wiley dropping a free throw with only 2:40 remaining to give the Cardinals a 64-63 lead. On Ireton’s next possession, Moseh went strong to basket for a layup and was fouled, maked a traditional three-point play and a 67-63 lead.

At this point, as the players battled under the Ireton basket for a rebound, a Ryken player fell hard to the floor, hitting the back of his head hard on the floor.  As the trainers worked on the player, an ambulance would be summoned to take him to the hospital, the 15-minute delay seemed, not surprisingly, to drain the visiting Knights.

Play resumed but Ryken appeared spent trailing 69-65, with 27 seconds left on the clock.  Wiley, Dan Noe, and Louie Khouri paraded to the line in the game’s final seconds to nail down the final 74-65 win, their second overtime win in the past three games.

Smith led all scorers with 31, Parker added 10, Blackwell 9, Ljesevic 5, Cole 4 and three others added a bucket for the visiting Knights. Da’von Wiley scored 21 for Ireton, Khouri 15, Moseh 13, Mark Noe 11, Dan Noe 8, and Brandon Scales 6.

Undefeated DeMatha (11-0, 4-0)  visits Godley Gym on Tuesday for a tripleheader in boys basketball. The top-ranked Stags lead the WCAC, fresh off a holiday championship in San Diego.  Varsity tipoff is scheduled for 7:30pm.

Hockey Cardinals snare hard earned point in tie with first place Woodbridge

Cardinals earned a key point against first place Woodbridge on Friday.

The Ireton Varsity hockey team was back in action last Friday night with a 7:00 pm tilt at the Mt. Vernon Rec Center against perennial powerhouse Woodbridge.  Those in attendance for the 7:00 pm showdown between division rivals were treated to an action packed thriller, with nonstop action right up until the final buzzer.  When the smoke had finally cleared, the scoreboard showed a 10-10 final, enabling the Cardinals to record their 2nd standings point of the season and ending Woodbridge’s bid for a perfect season.

The Patrick division rival Vikings, sporting a league-best 5-0 mark, came into the contest missing a couple of their starters and the young Ireton squad used that to their advantage.  Joey Gorman started the scoring for the Cardinals, notching his 1st goal of the season before the game was 3 minutes old.  Woodbridge responded quickly, knotting the score at 1 just two minutes later.  The teams would trade chances for the next 7 minutes until Stephen Gerke poked in a rebound of a Nick Tangora shot, picking up his 4th goal of the season with 2 minutes remaining in the period, and the Cardinals took that 2-1 lead into the break.  However, the Ireton offense was just getting started.

Early in the second, Gerke netted his 5th goal of the season, slamming in a one-timer off of a cross-ice feed from Ryan Scott.  Nick Tangora picked up the other assist.  Just over a minute later, Tangora picked up his 4th goal of the season, upping the Ireton lead to 4-1.  Fortunately for the Ireton faithful, Tangora, Ireton’s leading scorer this season, was just getting started.  Before the period was over he had also added his 5th and 6th goals of this campaign, completing his hat trick with 7 seconds left in the frame.  In between, Dillon Roach, the Cardinal Captain, added his first 2 goals of the season, including an unassisted,  short-handed tally that upped the Cardinal lead to 7-2 and whipped the home crowd into a frenzy.  That would prove to be short-lived, however, as the powerful Woodbridge offense finally got on track following a timeout to regroup.  The second period ended with the Ireton squad holding onto an 8-4 advantage, but with the Vikings beginning to ramp up their powerful offensive attack.

The third period saw more of the same early, with the Woodbridge shooters coming at sophomore goalie Phillip Thomas from all sides.  Thomas, who played the first 4 games of the season at forward, was making his first career start in net for the Cardinals.  With 3 Viking goals in just over 3 minutes, the Ireton lead had been cut to 8-7.  However, the duo of Stephen Gerke and Nick Tangora would click again, with Gerke picking up his 6th of the season on a Tangora assist, completing the 2nd Cardinal hat trick of the game and increasing the lead to 9-7.  Woodbridge turned up the heat again, scoring the next 3 goals and giving them a 10-9 lead with 8 minutes to play, their first and only lead of the game.  The Cardinals were not finished however and a furious rally ensued.  With just over 3 minutes remaining in the game, Freshman Ryan Scott scored the biggest goal of his young Ireton career, tying the game at 10 with his 3rd of the season.  Despite several more good chances at both ends of the ice, the game would end in a 10-10 deadlock.

Leading the scoring barrage for Ireton on this night were Nick Tangora and Stephen Gerke, each with 7 points (3 G, 4 A).  Line mate Ryan Scott was next with 3 points (1 G, 2 A), followed by Dillon Roach with 2 points, both goals.  Joey Gorman (1 G), Will Chastain (1 A), Jacob Bisnett (1 A), and Duke Roach (1 A) rounded out the scoring with 1 point each.  Phillip Thomas, who picked up his 1st goal of the season in Ireton’s last game while skating out, stopped 31 of 41 Woodbridge shots in net to earn the tie.  The next game for the Ireton Varsity hockey team is Friday, January 13, at 9:40 pm in Reston against division foe Forest Park / Brentsville.

Ryken Girls stop Ireton in hoops, 83-55

Isabelle Kendell scores on a jump shot at the St Stephen's tournament, Kendell is a high energy player off the bench for the Cardinals.

Coach Derek Campbell’s squad found Ryken’s Knights (7-4, 3-3) too tough to solve Friday night in Leonardtown as the home team handed Ireton (3-10,0-5) an 83-55 setback.

Seniors Rima Lghzaoui and Bianca Ojiegbe paced the Cardinals with 9 points each, Mara Celis and Laura Hart added 8, Camille Weber chipped in 7 while Julia O’Brien had 6, Isabelle Kendal 4, and Jasmine Conkright and Alexandra Stipano both added a bucket for Ireton.

But it was McCormick of St Mary’s Ryken that was the star of the show Friday night, pouring in six, three-pointers enroute to a 33-point scoring night.  Somerville added 14 and Cynthia Smith 11, Burgess 10 for the winning Knights.

Once again, the game got away from the Cardinals early and the redbirds were down 45-26 at the half. The second half was better for Ireton, but the lack of long-range shooting, not a 3 point shot on the night compared to 7 for Ryken, and free throw shooting was a big problem for the Cambridge Road squad.

Ryken was shooting 73% from the charity stripe, 24 of 33, while the Cardinals  got to the line 29 times but converted on 17, a 59% clip.

The Cardinals stay on the road, heading to Bladensburg on Tuesday for a  date with the Elizabeth Seton Roadrunners (10-5, 0-4) for a junior varsity, varsity doubleheader. JV tips off at 5pm, varsity at 7pm. Ireton returns home on Friday when the Mustangs of Bishop McNamara make their annual visit to Godley Gym.

In the JV game, the young Cardinals had an off night as well, following up a great game with Good Counsel with a 41-36 defeat at the hands of the Knights, the home team’s first win of the season.

Boys grab 3rd, Girls 6th in Holiday tournament action

Cardinals welcome a new year with
tough slate of WCAC games ahead

Coach Neil Berkman took his young team into the lion’s den of the 46th annual Capitol Classic hosted by Benedictine High School in Richmond and came away with a third place finish in the 8-team event while the girls played a pair of thrillers in a narrow first round loss and second round win enroute to a 6th place finish at Westfield High School’s Bulldog Bash after Christmas.

The Cardinals’ boys opened in Richmond with the nationally recognized Germantown Academy of Ft Washington, Pennsylvannia. After a tight first half, the Alexandria school pulled away for a 61-55 win in the opener, earning a semifinal date with host Benedictine.

Following the Benedictine setback, 71-60, Ireton found itself with the Falcons of Good Counsel for a matchup for third place.  It was a physical, evenly matched contest through regulation, settled only after an overtime period saw the “good guys” finally grab a lead and outlast the Olney, Maryland school 61-55.

The girls opened their holiday tournament with host Westfield in the Bulldogs’ gym.  The hosts held on to win the opener 43-35.  In the consolation round, Ireton, led by Camille Webber, edged Freedom/South Riding High School 43-41 to advance to the 5th place contest.  There the Alexandrians found Potomac High School of Prince William County to be too much to handle in a 78-36 setback, sending the club to a 6th place finish and left them with a 3-8 mark on the year.

Both squads take on Good Counsel Tuesday, Jan 3rd. The boys travel to Olney for a tripleheader, freshmen open at 4pm, varsity eventually underway at 7:30. Meanwhile, the Washington Post’s 3rd ranked Falcon girls travel to Father Godley Gym to tangle with the Cardinals in a tripleheader again beginning at 4pm with freshmen.

Junior Nick Womack and senior Andrew Lutterloh claimed championships and the Cardinals finished a strong second to John Marshall High School at the 2011 St Stephens/St Agnes School Holiday wrestling tournament.

For the burly senior, it was his third title in the young season, having captured the Northern Region championship at Fairfax High School, and the Bishop Ireton Holiday Classic prior to the Christmas holidays.   Womack earned his second championship on the heels of his win in Godley Gym at the Cardinals’ tourney last month.

Darcy Gomez had a second place finish, as did Mike Rodriguez, and Ben Nagao.  Junior Jimmy Keegan earned a third place finish as did senior Andrew Bladen, who wrestled up one weight class.  Gomez had the most thrilling championship match, wrestling 2-2 at 113 pound weight class into the final seconds with Gilman of Baltimore’s Jack King. Both had an opportunity to throw the other for a winning takedown, but it was King who completed the throw for the win at the buzzer.
