Coach Derek Campbell’s squad found Ryken’s Knights (7-4, 3-3) too tough to solve Friday night in Leonardtown as the home team handed Ireton (3-10,0-5) an 83-55 setback.
Seniors Rima Lghzaoui and Bianca Ojiegbe paced the Cardinals with 9 points each, Mara Celis and Laura Hart added 8, Camille Weber chipped in 7 while Julia O’Brien had 6, Isabelle Kendal 4, and Jasmine Conkright and Alexandra Stipano both added a bucket for Ireton.
But it was McCormick of St Mary’s Ryken that was the star of the show Friday night, pouring in six, three-pointers enroute to a 33-point scoring night. Somerville added 14 and Cynthia Smith 11, Burgess 10 for the winning Knights.
Once again, the game got away from the Cardinals early and the redbirds were down 45-26 at the half. The second half was better for Ireton, but the lack of long-range shooting, not a 3 point shot on the night compared to 7 for Ryken, and free throw shooting was a big problem for the Cambridge Road squad.
Ryken was shooting 73% from the charity stripe, 24 of 33, while the Cardinals got to the line 29 times but converted on 17, a 59% clip.
The Cardinals stay on the road, heading to Bladensburg on Tuesday for a date with the Elizabeth Seton Roadrunners (10-5, 0-4) for a junior varsity, varsity doubleheader. JV tips off at 5pm, varsity at 7pm. Ireton returns home on Friday when the Mustangs of Bishop McNamara make their annual visit to Godley Gym.
In the JV game, the young Cardinals had an off night as well, following up a great game with Good Counsel with a 41-36 defeat at the hands of the Knights, the home team’s first win of the season.
