Cardinals bounce back from city championships to sweep O’Connell

The Cardinals,'Emileigh Rettig, above, attacked the Knights as a team as well as they have all season on Saturday.

Coach Kathy Gutmann couldn’t quite put her finger on it when Bishop Ireton seemed to be out of sync in a three-game setback to TC Williams in the Alexandria City championships on Friday night. The team had built a 4-game win streak and was playing their best volleyball of the season up to that point.  So she didn’t try.

The Cardinals shook off whatever the problem was by Saturday as they disassembled the Bishop O’Connell Knights in three straight games in Father Godley Gym.  The first game proved the be the test of wills, with Ireton outlasting the Arlington visitors 29-27.  That marathon seemed to set the tone for the rest of the afternoon as the red and gold took charge of the final two games, 25-21, 25-22.

“We have talked about ‘make something happen’ when we get to certain spots in the match.” explained Gutmann. “When the girls got in the huddle and chanted, ‘make something happen’ I figured they were ready to get after it.”  Gutmann credited the team with attacking well, taking the play to the Knights and not waiting for a mistake.

“Ashley Cabrera really served the ball well for us. We attacked as well as we have all season. We are back in that groove.” suggested the Ireton coach.

Cardinals head to Elizabeth Seton on Monday to battle the Roadrunners. JV starts at 4:30, varsity at 6pm.

Cardinals “find a way” to win late, 22-15

Hard running Andrew Bladen, above, took care of the pigskin to score the winning TD for undefeated Bishop Ireton Saturday.

There is a saying, “I’d rather be lucky than good” and in the seventh week of the regular season, the Cardinals looked like “their number was up” when Benedictine took a 15-14 lead on a field goal with under 5 minutes remaining.  But thanks to some luck in the form of undisciplined play by the Cadets late in the Cardinals’ final drive of the game, Andrew Bladen turned second chances to an Ireton advantage as he scored on a short  rush to give the Cardinals a thrilling 22-15 win to improve to 7-0 on the season.

Benedictine scored first after the Cardinals had a nightmare start to the contest on an otherwise beautiful, blustery fall day for a Richmond homecoming.  Going three and out on their first possession, the snap from center sailed over punter Aurelian Guillaud’s head and the lanky punter scrambled to get a short punt away.

Fortunately, Benedictine was flagged for too many men on the field and Ireton had a second chance.  This time the snap was perfect, but perhaps  unnerved, Guillaud dropped the ball and rushed the ball only to the Cardinals’ 29 and  left the green-shirted hosts  with a first down deep in Ireton territory.

It took only 4 plays for the home team to grab a 6-0 lead as senior quarterback David Greary tossed  36-yard touchdown over the outstretched hands of the Cardinals’ Robert Banez to senior Charley Meyer.  The PAT kick was no good, but Benedictine held a 6-0 lead.

The Cadets again stopped Ireton but Guillaud boomed a 55-yard  punt  into the end zone then followed with a 36-yard kick that rolled out of bounds at the 2-yard line.  When the Cardinals stripped the football on the second play of the drive and Bladen recovered on the 7-yard line, the northern Virginians were in business.  Moses Webb quickly sprinted up the middle almost untouched and a Galdos PAT gave Ireton a 7-6 advantage.

Ireton would use a long 30-yard pass play to Merid Merid in the second quarter to knock on the door once again, and Webb scored his second touchdown of the day with three straight rushes to push the advantage to 14-6, a lead the visitors would protect into the halftime locker room.

Benedictine returned from homecoming festivities and promptly marched down the field on their second possession of the half,  a 10-play, 47-yard drive capped by a Corey Downey 7-yard scamper, to narrow the Ireton advantage to 14-12 as they failed on a two-point attempt following the touchdown.

The Cardinals struggled throughout the second half to get any offensive consistency. Fortunately, the unsung defense of coordinator Matt Shea stymied the Richmond school repeatedly (they  forced a pair of turnovers in the game), including following a Cadet interception deep in Ireton’s end.  Benedictine’s freshman Michael Greary missed a short field goal but quickly got the ball back and when stalled again in the red zone, Greary did find the range with a field goal with 4:56 remaining to play and the Cadets were back in front 15-14 with an enthusiastic homecoming crowd roaring it approval.

The Cardinals got a good kickoff return to near midfield. Head coach Tony Verducci inserted hard nosed Andrew Bladen into the backfield and, with the scrambling of quarterback PJ Zingler, Ireton began pushing that “big rock” up the steep hill. When things started to look bleak for the state’s top ranked private school football team, the Cadets stepped in with some ill advised, undiscipline play.

The Cardinals’ drive appeared to stall on the Cadet’s 30-yard line when a late hit after the play was followed by a scrum and at least one punch from a Cadet.  Sophomore Amani Williams eventually was ejected from the contest.  The personal foul gave Ireton new life inside the 20.

Once again, Benedictine’s defense stonewalled the Cardinals and Galdos entered the contest to attempt a 35-yard field goal.  While the kick missed badly, Galdos was drilled well after the kick by the Cadets and the ensuing personal foul gave the Alexandrians yet another first down inside the 10 yard line.

This time the white shirts would not waste the opportunity and Bladen plowed into the endzone from 4 yards out and 1:58 remaining. Sitting on a 20-15 lead, Ireton deftly executed a fake extra point kick and Zingler tossed a short aerial to senior Brendan Bowe for the two-point conversion.

Though the Cardinals pinned Benedictine on their 17 yardline, the Cadets rode the scrambling of senior quarterback David Greary on 4th and long to keep the drive alive, and a 18-yard dash by Meyer, as they moved down the field as the clock raced toward the game’s conclusion. Not quickly enough for the Cardinal faithful however, as Greary heaved a desparation pass from the Ireton 36 into the endzone only to see Moses Webb make sure there would be no heroics on the game’s final play.

“It is so important that we found a way to win this game, one that we didn’t play our best offensively.” said a smiling offensive coordinator, Joe Blaszkow, a 2003 alum of the Cambridge Road school. “I have seen many times in the past where this sort of game got away from us.”  Indeed, Zingler connected on 9 of 28 for 71 yards and Ireton rushed the ball 24 times for only 91 yards, but still outgained the Cadets in total yardage.

The win, the second on the road against that week’s VISAA third-ranked division I football team, puts the top-ranked Cardinals in great shape for the state playoffs.  With the dangerous Paul VI Panthers due for a 1pm kickoff on Fannon Field Saturday, the Cardinals will have senior day and their annual homecoming to deal with as well as their long-time diocesan rival.  They will then finish the regular season on the road with dates at The Potomac School, at 1pm,  and a season-ending Friday night contest at St Mary’s Rykien at 7pm.

Amarantides, Fantino score a pair but O’Connell rallies for 4-4 tie

Bishop Ireton’s Cardinals came after the Knights of Bishop O’Connell Friday afternoon like they had taken their lunch money, peppering the keeper early and often as sophomore Spencer Amarantides scored twice in the game’s opening 8 minutes.  The stunned Arlington visitors had no answer and when junior Elliot Fantino pushed the host team out to a 3-0 lead there was smiles all around Fannon Field with 20 minutes left in the first half.

The tide turned in a moment after the Knights finally got on the board.  A defense pass somehow got up in the air and over the head of the Ireton keeper and in little less than a minute the 3-0 advantage was cut to 3-2, one of two defensive miscues that would show up on the guest’s side of the ledger.   Fantino, however, would strike again to steady the surprised Cardinals and go into halftime with a 4-2 lead that no one in attendance believed was quite safe enough at that point.

Bishop O’Connell would get on the board again midway through the final half, and with 9 minutes to go, found the equalizer at 4-4.  The teams settled into jabs into the offensive zones, but each time the other collapsed on the ball and cleared to center, focusing on denying goals rather than risking a mistake that could cost a goal.

It was a sour outcome for Coach Jon Norem’s Cardinals who were on the cusp of their first conference win over their long time rivals.  The team heads on the road to St Johns on Tuesday before returning home next Friday night for senior night during the festivities surrounding homecoming 2011 and a visit from the Falcons of Good Counsel.

Knights snap Cardinals unbeaten streak at 9, 2-0

The Cardinals wore their road blacks in a rescheduled match at Ireton with DJO Friday

It was a tale of two halves, the Knights coverted on their chances in a more dominating first half of play with Stephanie Paige and junior Morgan Reuther finding the net, while the Cardinals gained advantage but no goals in their second half, falling 2-0 in Alexandria.

Early, the physical O’Connell team set the pace and played in Ireton territory for long periods of the opening frame.  Brenna Heney kept the Cardinals close with strong play in the goal, but the visitors tallied twice.

The second half frustrated coach Alberto Starache as the Cardinals streaked down the field with their greatest scoring opportunities, but goalkeeper Ashley Cox made a number of strong saves and key plays to deny the home team any tallies.

For Ireton there is the weekend to regroup as Coach Gino Leon’s squad entertains St Johns, who shutout O’Connell 1-0 earlier in the week, on Tuesday, then head to Olney, Maryland to challenge undefeated Good Counsel on Thursday.

Ireton volleyball dumps O’Connell, Fredericksburg Christian

Bishop Ireton’s volleyball Cardinals gave Coach Kathy Gutmann her first win over Bishop O”Connell in Arlington on Thursday then snared a second in a nonconference match up with Fredericksburg Christian on Friday.

The Knights ecked out game one, 25-21, but Gutmann’s gang kept plugging and swept O’Connell in the next three games, 25-18, 26-24, and 25-19.

“This was 12 girls playing extremely well. We wanted to attack and play the ball where they weren’t, not just wait on their mistakes. Our serves were great and everyone just played a great game.” praised the Ireton coach.  “Emileigh Rettig made strong shots down the line, Cabrera was strong serving the ball, Elizabeth Schaefermaier played well on the back, it was just an overall team win.”

The Cardinals carried the strong serves and airtight defense into the Friday matchup with Fredericksburg Christian where Ireton won in three, 25-20, 25-21, 25-16.  Rettig led the Cards with 8 attack kills, while the defense remained rock solid.

Kristin Becht recorded 7 digs, Ashley Cabrera 5, Sarah Hersey6, while Laura Hart and Rayghan Larick each tallied 4.

“Once again, on Friday, we are in a ‘zone” right now, the team is playing well.” explained Gutmann. “It’s fun to watch and the girls are really on a roll.”

Bishop Ireton heads on the road to Pope John Paul the Great Tuesday for a 6pm match with the Wolves then it’s off to the Alexandria City championships at TC Williams High School Thursday and Friday. Cardinals look to meet Episcopal in the opening round the tourney.

O’Connor wins City cross country championship in record time

Senior Liam O’Connor flies by enroute to a course recordbreaking first place finish at Episcopal for the 2011 Alexandria City Championships

Bishop Ireton’s Liam O’Conner captured the Alexandria City individual varsity boys cross country championship in a course record 16:56 to lead the Cardinals to a second place boys finish, while the varsity girls edged St Stephens for  third.  TC Williams captured the City championship overall with wins on both varsity sides. Episcopal finished third on the boys side while St Stephens was fourth on both boys and girls varsity races.

The Ireton senior speedster toured the course on a perfect weather afternoon in Alexandria and seemed to get stronger as the race progressed pulling away from his nearest competitor as they entered the woods on the back third of the course. When they emerged, O’Connor had lengthened his lead and pulled away to a record breaking win.
Katie Necochia’s 5th place finish in the girls’ varsity race paced Ireton and “flock” of Cardinals, Aubrey Gartlan, Oliva Babiec, Natalie and Eva Irwin finished nearly together to edge St Stephens.

Field Hockey falls to #5 JPG, thumps Wilson on senior day

Senior Day was a success for 7 Ireton seniors in their first field hockey season as they posted a big win over Wilson High School Monday on Fannon Field.

Fifth ranked Pope John Paul the Great looked like too much talent, too soon for the first-year Bishop Ireton Cardinals field hockey squad.  But you couldn’t tell any disparity for the majority of the game as the Wolves needed 3 goals in the final five minutes to finally put the game out of reach from those pesky Cardinals on Friday in a 4-0 affair in Dumfries.

“John Paul the Great’s head coach, Erin Baker, was very complimentary of the effort and skill our girls demonstrated,” commented varsity assistant coach, Betty Sixsmith. “Until the end of the game, when we got tired, we gave them all they could handle.  I was very pleased with our effort as was Coach Simons.”

Indeed, the Wolves scored in the opening minutes of the contest, but after that the undermanned Cardinals held their own. The rescheduled contest on Friday of a long weekend put some seniors in previously scheduled college visits, but the girls on the field made their presence known.

The 1-0 Wolves’ advantage stood through the first half and deep into the game until the home team solved the Ireton defense and an exhausted group of Cardinals momentarily faltered defensively.

The senior day contest with the first-year program from Woodrow Wilson demonstrated the team and staff’s efforts are taking hold and Friday results were a strong case for the progress of the Cardinals’ newest program as they thumped the Tigers 8-0.

“The seniors played like you expect seniors to play, I was happy with the effort and that they got a big win on senior day.” said Coach Erin Simons.  “This was a good opportunity for all the girls to play quite a bit and they responded well.”

Bishop Ireton will complete their first season of field hockey with a game at Holy Cross next Monday before ending the campaign in Washington visiting the DCIAA’s other first year field hockey program, School without Walls on the campus of George Washington University.

Cards reach new heights in 27-7 win over third ranked Flint Hill

Moses Webb scored 4 TDs and intercepted a pass Friday at Flint Hill

On the eve of the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, it was perhaps fitting that Moses would make a heroic appearance.   While the original Moses of the Bible led the Israelites out of Egypt, the Cardinals’ Moses, senior Moses Webb, scored all four Ireton touchdowns and added an interception to lead Bishop Ireton’s top ranked football team out of Oakton with it’s unblemished record intact thanks to a convincing 27-7 victory Friday afternoon.

The Cardinals advanced to 6-0, the first time ever a Bishop Ireton football team has won the first six games of the season. The team is riding an 8-game win streak, started last season against Flint Hill.

“We played a very good football team today,” commented head coach, Tony Verducci. “we made more big plays today and that was the difference.”

Ireton kicked off to the Huskies and the home team went to work on the ground, riding senior running back Conor Chess as they moved from their own 19 to the 40 before punting.  The Cards could do little on their first possession but senior Aurelian Guillaud boomed a 50-yard punt to push the Huskies back into their own end of the field.

Once again Flint Hill began to push down the field, gaining a first down before testing senior cornerback Moses Webb.  A dangerous proposition, as many Ireton opponents have learned, and the sure handed two-way player intercepted an Andy Rehberger pass and Ireton regained possession on the Cards’ 21 yard line.

Though the Cardinals did begin to gain some ground offensively, they once again were forced to punt and the blue-clad hosts began their third drive of the game. As they pushed to midfield, Rehberger was forced out of the pocket and the lanky 6’4″ senior headed up field only to lose the football when tackled at the Ireton 35.

Like the anaconda snake, the Cardinals began tightening the hold on the Huskies that would slowly squeeze tighter as the game wore on. Junior PJ Zingler, who would throw for nearly 300 yards, hit his favorite receiver, Malcolm Westbrook,  for a 24-yard gain, sending Ireton deep in Flint Hill territory. A pair of lashing runs by junior Brandon Price-Williams put the visitors on the doorstep when Webb scampered around the right end for 21 yards for Ireton’s first touchdown on the final play of the quarter.

Flint Hill responded with their best drive of the contest, with Alex Abraham catching a 10-yard toss from Rehberger, junior Jerrod Reed rushing for 10 yards, but it was workhorse Conor Chess who carried for 29 yards on 6 carries to pull the home team even at 7-7 early in the second quarter.

When Ireton’s next drive stalled, the Huskies were back in business and driving into Cardinal territory until junior Jack Beer and senior Patrick O’Connell slowed the Huskies ground attack, then Andrew Lutterloh and Beer combined for a big sack of Rehberger.  Flint Hill’s exceptional senior placekicker Hunter Windmuller had plenty of leg for a 37-yard field goal, but the severe angle pushed the kick just wide.

That swing of events seemed to turn the tide in the Cardinals’ favor for the next two plays. Zingler connected with Price-Williams for 22 yards on Ireton’s first play after the missed field goal, then dropped a 58-yard bomb to Webb who sprinted to the end zone and Ireton was back on top, 14-7.

The Cardinals got the ball to open the second half and came out fast. After another Windmuller kickoff went into the endzone, Zingler engineered a 4-play, 80-yard drive with Webb again hauling in a Zingler 58-yard aerial and dashing into the endzone to quickly extend the lead to 20-7.  Senior kicker Nick Galdos, a soccer player for the Cardinals, had made 22 straight PATs before his 3rd attempt that afternoon was tipped and no good.

The “anaconda” Cardinals were tightening the grip.  Flint Hill gained one first down and returned the ball to Ireton via the punt to the Cardinal 37. This time Ireton methodically moved down the field mixing the running of Price-Williams, Bladen, Zingler, and Webb with crisp passes and Webb broke up the middle for a 7-yard TD and a 27-7 advantage.

Once again, the defense squeezed the increasingly desperate Husky offense and soon Ireton was back on offense. The teams traded punts and the setting sun served as a metaphor for the fading chances as the final period wound down for Virginia’s third ranked Division I football team, who entered the game with a spotless 4-0 record.

The Cardinals once again drove deep into Husky territory late in the 4th quarter but coughed up a fumble at the Husky one yard line to save Flint Hill from yet another Ireton score.  The hosts started a drive from deep in their own end, but could not sustain the drive and Ireton rode out the clock.

The Huskies held Ireton to a season low 93 yards rushing, but Zingler responded with an 18 for 25 day passing, racking up 297 yards through the air, 167 of those to Webb.  The defense had another spectacular performance, holding Flint Hill to a season low 7 points, where the Huskies were averaging just over 25 per contest.

The surging Cadets of Benedictine are next for the Cardinals. It will be homecoming for Richmond school, kickoff is slated for 1pm.  The Cadets have manhandled Paul VI in the season opener 33-7 before suffering their only setback on the season when Woodberry Forest edged the Cadets 16-13 in week two.
