Bishop Ireton’s volleyball Cardinals gave Coach Kathy Gutmann her first win over Bishop O”Connell in Arlington on Thursday then snared a second in a nonconference match up with Fredericksburg Christian on Friday.
The Knights ecked out game one, 25-21, but Gutmann’s gang kept plugging and swept O’Connell in the next three games, 25-18, 26-24, and 25-19.
“This was 12 girls playing extremely well. We wanted to attack and play the ball where they weren’t, not just wait on their mistakes. Our serves were great and everyone just played a great game.” praised the Ireton coach. “Emileigh Rettig made strong shots down the line, Cabrera was strong serving the ball, Elizabeth Schaefermaier played well on the back, it was just an overall team win.”
The Cardinals carried the strong serves and airtight defense into the Friday matchup with Fredericksburg Christian where Ireton won in three, 25-20, 25-21, 25-16. Rettig led the Cards with 8 attack kills, while the defense remained rock solid.
Kristin Becht recorded 7 digs, Ashley Cabrera 5, Sarah Hersey6, while Laura Hart and Rayghan Larick each tallied 4.
“Once again, on Friday, we are in a ‘zone” right now, the team is playing well.” explained Gutmann. “It’s fun to watch and the girls are really on a roll.”
Bishop Ireton heads on the road to Pope John Paul the Great Tuesday for a 6pm match with the Wolves then it’s off to the Alexandria City championships at TC Williams High School Thursday and Friday. Cardinals look to meet Episcopal in the opening round the tourney.
