The area’s “Athletes for Christ” will recognize seniors Liam O’Connor and Gabriella Goddette at a ceremony Tuesday in Arlington, Virginia. The pair of Bishop Ireton athletes will join awardees from Bishop O’Connell, Paul VI Catholic, and Pope John Paul the Great at a ceremony at the Top of the Town in Arlington. The group will also recognize the Washington Nationals batting coach Rick Eckstein at the event. The group selects athletes not only for exceptional athletic accomplishments, but also to recognize their leadership and witness to their Christian faith.
O’Connor has starred on the cross country team and track team as a distance runner as well as served as a leader in his school; past president of the Beta Club, a member of National Honor Society, and Campus Ministry. He is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Kevin O’Connor of Alexandria.
Goddette has been a four-year starter on undefeated girls soccer team, a distance runner for the track team, the current president of the Beta club, NHS member and active leader in campus ministries. She is the daughter of Colonel & Mrs. Timothy Goddette, USA, of Burke, Virginia.
Both athletes were nominated by Bishop Ireton High School. “I am proud of both these athletes. They are among the best examples of student-athletes in our School.” said athletic director Bill Simmons. “I would like to tell you they are just average Ireton kids, but they truly are exceptional young people, both Liam and Gabby. ”
The ceremonies at the Top of the Town begin at 7pm.
