Move to the Boathouse signals start of Crew’s spring campaign

Parents and rowers descended on Anacostia Boathouse to clean the area in anticipation of a new season.

Spring is here! ?

There is no other sign that spring is here more definite for the crew team than the spring cleaning at the Anacostia Community Boathouse!

Bishop Ireton rowers and parents help get the motor launches in the water and the docks cleaned up in anticipation of the beginning of water workouts starting on Monday.   Rowers are ending the winter training drudgery and hitting the water in anticipation of their first regatta on March 19th.  Plan on coming to see some races and soak in some sun as the  team starts its optimistic season.   The teams qualified a pair of boats last spring for the national championships in New York and look for similar results in 2011.

Cardinal Girls Host Episcopal in First Round VISAA basketball tourney action

Senior Laura Hart and the Cardinals host Episcopal in first round VISAA tournament action Tuesday.

The Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association announced its 12 team state tournament pairings Sunday with the 7th seeded Cardinals hosting city rival, Episcopal, in the first round action.  The winner advances to play #2 Flint Hill on Wednesday.  Bishop Ireton announced Monday the opening game with the Maroon will be a 6pm tipoff in Fr Godley Gymnasium.  Additionally, the School reminded fans that no season passes or free tickets for students are available for this state playoff contest, admission is $5 at the door.

“I am thrilled for the team and Coach Campbell that the state selection committee recognized the potential of our girls.” said athletic director Bill Simmons. “It would be easy to look strictly at our record and dismiss us as not competitive. To that end, PVI’s Scott Allen, the northern region representative, has done a stellar job representing the region and our three WCAC members.  This seeding shows the respect the state has for the WCAC and our program.   I hope we get a strong turnout, Ireton supports its teams and that message is a good one to send to Richmond as well.”

Paul VI enters the tournament a top seed, while Bishop O’Connell drew a #4 seed.   The tournament format has games Tuesday, Wednesday at the higher seeded schools, then a trip to Richmond to play the semifinals and finals on Friday and Saturday at the Abbey of Benedictine.

Mondragon Earns a Third Place, all-American honors at National Preps

Senior Elliot Mondragon displays his 3rd place trophy, highest finish for an Ireton wrestler in 25 years or more. Mondragon achieved all-American status with the third place.

Senior Co-Captain Elliot Mondragon placed third and earned All-American honors at the National Prep Wrestling Championships at Lehigh University this weekend.  Elliot capped an outstanding wrestling career at Bishop Ireton with another exceptional tournament and a huge victory for third place to earn the prestigious honor.  Seeded eighth, he wrestled marvelously and delivered results well-above the  expectations of the seeding committee.  His finish and his three teammates propelled the Cardinals to a 31st place in the tournament field of 126 schools from New England through Pennsylvania to Virginia.

In the championship half of the bracket, Elliot pinned his first opponent from Pennsylvania in 21 seconds and then won by technical fall over his second opponent from New England.  With his only loss coming in the quarterfinals at the hands of the ultimate champion from perennial powerhouse and tournament champion, New Jersey’s  Blair Academy;  Elliott powered back in the consolation round, initially defeating his fourth opponent of the day, Shane Wilson from  Dematha 7-0 to earn a spot among the top eight.

Elliot started an extremely memorable second day of wrestling almost as strong as the first, pinning VISAA opponent Dustin Runzo of Norfolk Academy in 3:44.  This set up an intriguing matchup with last week’s VISAA State Champion at 103, Tony Protogyrou from Norfolk Collegiate.  This time, Elliot earned a quick takedown, controlled the match throughout and pinned his opponent in 2:13 to set up the consolation final for third place.   The third place match was wrestled in the style for which Elliott has become known.  He faced a very competent Jack Mutchnik from St Paul’s in Baltimore who was the runner-up in last week’s Maryland Independent State Tournament.  Elliot controlled the tempo and the match for a solid 5-3 victory, the third place trophy and All-American status!  Elliott’s final match can be viewed at Flowrestling.com.  (http://www.flowrestling.org/videos/coverage/view_video/238478-2011-national-prep-championships/469769-103lbs-3rd-elliot-mondragon-r-bishop-ireton-vs-jack-mutchnik-g-st-pauls).

Elliot’s latest achievements attest to his outstanding career while at Ireton.  He has contributed immensely to the latest accomplishments of the Ireton wrestling program. Only three otherCardinalwrestlers have earned distinction as “All American” in the history of Ireton’s wrestling program.  “Ellliot had a tremendous tournament, said coach Don Dight. “It was a special way to cap an exceptional season and career at Bishop Ireton!”

Elliot was joined at the National Prep Championship Tournament by senior Co-Captain, Ricky Baier at 140, junior Co-Captain, Andrew Lutterloh at 215 and sophomore standout, Nick Womach at 130.  They represented the legacy of BI wrestling excellence exceedingly well.  Anyone who’s been associated with this level of wrestling knows it’s brutally competitive nature.  These hard-nosed grapplers wrestled mightily, demonstrated their adroit skills and experienced national level competition at its best.  Ricky Baier closed out his senior year and Ireton career with this unique experience and underclassmen Andrew and Nick enjoyed but a taste of the flavor of competition at the national level.

The tournament was the final event for the Cardinals in the 2010-11 wrestling season. With but four seniors departing the program, Dight is excited for the prospects in the 2011-12 season already.

Ireton’s O’Keefe inks with Radford Highlanders’ Soccer

Senior Dan O'Keefe (second from right) is joined by (left to right) Coach Jon Norem, principal, Tim Hamer, his mother, Barbara, AD Bill Simmons and father, Denis

Senior Dan O’Keefe signed a national letter of intent to play soccer for Radford University and Coach Marc Reeves on Monday with Bishop Ireton administrators, his parents, and well-wishers all looking on.  The Highlanders of the Big South Conference are coming off a 7-9-2 season which included games with Virginia Tech and North Carolina’s Tar Heels.

O’Keefe, the son of Mr & Mrs Denis O’Keefe of Alexandria, Virginia, was a three-year letterman for the Cardinals and a first-team all-WCAC selection in 2010 as a midfielder and an honorable mention Washington Post All-Met player.  Dan captained the Bishop Ireton soccer team both his junior and senior campaigns, as well as being selected its most valuable player in 2009.

As a member of the Annandale United FC for five years with Coach Bo Amato, he played for the Virginia State Cup champions in 2009 and 2010, won the Region 1 Premier League championship in 2010, and the club is currently ranked number 1 in Virginia and number 2 in the United States.   At his letter signing ceremony, the rangy senior thanked both his high school coach, Jon Norem, and his club coach, “I have enjoyed soccer with my high school teammates and certainly the five years with my club team tremendously.  Coach Amato has made a big difference for me. While we didn’t enjoy all the success we hoped at Bishop Ireton, Coach Norem made it a wonderful opportunity for me to be a Cardinal soccer player.”

In addition to his work on the soccer pitch, O’Keefe was selected to attend the 2010  Salesian Leadership Camp, a nation-wide opportunity in Michigan, and is a member of the School’s National Honor Society.

Cardinals Dump Herndon, Knights rally in third periond to spoil Senior Night 6-3

Bishop Ireton said "farewell" to 8 senior hockey players and their families Friday night at the Mount Vernon Rec Center in Alexandria.

The division rival Herndon Hornets paid a visit to the Mt. Vernon Rec Center last Monday in the regular season finale for both teams.  The outcome was never in doubt in this afternoon matinee, as the high-powered Cardinal offense pumped in 4 first period tallies en route to a convincing 7-1 victory.  The game marked the third consecutive 7-goal performance for the squad.

Joe Lavelle (1 G, 1 A) opened the scoring at just under 3 minutes in on a cross-ice feed from Reid Yager.  Despite several more early quality scoring chances, the Cardinals would not dent the twine again until the 4 minute mark of the period.  However, when it rains it pours as the Ireton sharpshooters scored 4 goals over the next 5 minutes to quash any hope of a Herndon comeback.  The outburst was led by Yager (3 G, 3 A), notching a natural hat trick, as well as an unassisted goal by Tom Cyrnak (2 G, 1 A).  The final 2 goals, scored late in the second period by David Souliotis and Cyrnak, closed out the scoring.  Nick Tangora contributed 3 assists, while freshmen Phillip Thomas and Jordan Zelasko both notched their first assists of the season.  The defense was again solid in front of goalie Robert Chastain, who picked up his 6th league win of the season.

Last Friday night the Varsity Hockey team celebrated Senior Night with a 7:00 pm non-league match against Bishop O’Connell.  The night kicked off with pre-game festivities honoring the 8 graduating Seniors and their parents.  Reid Yager, Robert Chastain, Tom Cyrnak, David Souliotis, Dan Tangora, Allen Boelke, Joe Lavelle, and Manager Pat O’Leary were lauded for their on and off-ice accomplishments in front of a packed house at the Mt. Vernon Rec Center.

Buoyed by the ceremony and the energy in the building, the Cardinals played a spirited, physical first period of hockey, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first period.  Goals by Reid Yager (assisted by Dan Tangora), Allen Boelke and Dillon Roach had the Knights back on their heels in what looked to be another impressive outing by the Ireton squad.  However, things started to unravel for the home team in the second period as injuries and untimely penalties started to became a factor.  Fatigue began to set in as they were forced to double-shift some of their starters and they limped into the second period break with a tenuous 3-1 advantage, hoping to hold on for the win.   However, it was just not to be on this night, as the O’Connell team seized the momentum, tying the contest just 6 minutes into the third period.  When all was said and done the Knights had scored five times in the final stanza, including an empty-netter, for the 6-3 win.

Overall the Ireton team closed out the league schedule with a mark of 6-3-1, good for a second place finish in the division, one game behind Briar Woods.  They will open the playoffs on Friday night, February 18th.  The matchups, along with the exact locations and times, will be determined later this week.

Wrestlers 7th in 33-team St Albans Invitational

Captain Elliot Mondragon scores a takedown against St Benedict's in St Albans wrestling Saturday

The Bishop Ireton grapplers competed at the Annual St. Albans Invitational Wrestling Tournament on Friday (2/11) and Saturday (2/12) and as expected it was a grueling two days of wrestling for the team. The tournament included 33 very competitive teams from Maryland, Virginia, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, including the three teams against whom the Cardinals lost during the regular season.   With schools of this caliber competing, it represented largest, most skilled tournament challenge that the Cardinal squad will face this season.

The Cardinals once again had less than a full line-up, but despite this the team finished in seventh place, eleven places ahead of their finish in the last St. Albans tournament, which was in 2009.   This year seven of our wrestlers placed and as a team, the Cardinals also were awarded the St. Albans Good Sportsmanship Award.

The tournament featured several nail-biting, bleacher-pounding, edge-of-your-seat performances, but there were four that were particularly note worthy. Among them was the especially stellar performance of Ben Nagao, who placed sixth in his highly-competitive 152lb weight class. Ben, who was unseeded in the tournament brackets, fell in his second bout to the #3 seed from Good Counsel. This loss put him into the consolation brackets, where he had to wrestle an additional six matches for his sixth place finish. Along the way he defeated opponents from Bullis and Bishop O’Connell, who had previously defeated him this season.  Against a tough series of wrestlers, Ben earned his place in the tournament the hard way.

Two similar accomplishments were those of Darcy Gomez who likewise beat a Good Counsel opponent against whom he had previously lost and finished the tournament in sixth place. Co-Captain Ricky Baier also defeated a Bishop O’Connell opponent against whom he had previously lost to earn his fifth place finish in the tournament.

The fourth noteworthy accomplishment was that of co-captain Andrew Lutterloh, who achieved his 100th career win during the tournament and placed third in his 215lb weight class, which was Ireton’s second highest finish in the tournament.

Among the other tournament placers was Co-Captain Elliot Mondragon, who was the highest placer for Bishop Ireton and brought home the silver with his second place finish in his 103lb weight class. Nick Womach also brought home a medal for his sixth place tournament finish in his 130lb weight class. Gibson Hawk rounded off the team placers by finishing in seventh place in his 160lb weight class. The fastest pin of the tournament was achieved by Nick Womach, who pinned his Maret opponent in :54 seconds.

The last wrestling event of the season for the Cardinals will be the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) Championship Tournament on February 18-19, 2011 at the VCU Siegal Center in Richmond, VA.

Cheerleaders “Three-peat” at Blue Ridge Classics

2011 Blue Ridge Classics Grand Champions!

The Bishop Ireton Varsity Cheerleading team maintained their championship title for the 3rd year in a row at the Blue Ridge Classics competition on Saturday at Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. Again, they won the 1st place title and received the Grand Champion trophy! The cheerleaders defeated teams from North Carolina and Virginia such as Wilmington Christian, Wilson Academy, Faith Academy, Fredericksburg Christian Academy, and Liberty Christian Academy, just to name a few.

They are continuing to prove that they are a championship team and their competitors are beginning to respect them on the mat. “The girls were on fire today!” praised Coach Angela Hope-Eskew. “People know who the BI cheerleaders are now, and they have high expectations for them. The team always rises to the occasion and surpasses the expectation! They performed a 1st place routine today and I was very proud of them!” The competition was tough but, it was the Alexandria school who left southwest Virginia with another championship title and momentum for Nationals.

Ireton heads to the national championships in suburban Charlotte, NC March 3-7. The team finished 4th last year in the National competition, and fifth they prior year under the 2 years of Coach Hope-Eskew.

Alums Pitch Hampden-Sydney to Baseball win

Dan Nicol (#16) and Luke Rabiej (#18) were key members of the 2009 Cardinals, who were edged 4-3 in a rain-delayed WCAC championship

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team kicked off the 2011 season on the right foot taking both games of its double header ith Averett University. The Tigers overcame deficits in both games, winning the first 5-1 and the second 5-3.

Averett was quick to score, as leadoff man Adam Higgins scored in the first inning on a Jordan Kidd RBI. Sophomore starting pitcher Dan Nicoll (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton) was then able to pitch his way out of the inning.

Though Hampden-Sydney did not respond in the second, the Tigers were able to score two runs in the third inning on Jordan Wind (Tappahannock, VA/Essex) and Chris Martin (Chesterfield, VA/Manchester) RBI.

Nicoll did his part, allowing no runs and just one hit in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Hampden-Sydney’s offense then struck again in the bottom of the fifth. Martin was able to score after reaching on a double. Freshman Colby Carter (Manakin-Sabot, VA/Goochland) knocked Martin home with an RBI single to take a 3-1 lead.

After Luke Rabiej (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton) pitched a scoreless inning, Martin ripped a two RBI triple that scored Drew Walker (Midlothian, VA/Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot) and Ryan Carter (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale).
