The annual Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) Tournament was held on Saturday at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School. Despite missing one of our key wrestlers, seven individual wrestlers placed among the top four for their weight class and one earned a title as champion.
Senior co-captain Elliot Mondragon elevated his season record to 33-0 by winning his first WCAC championship. One of the most exciting championship matches of the night featurd co-captain Ricky Baier at 140 lbs, who was upset in overtime by Callaghan of O’Connell and placed second.
Gibson Hawk at 160 lbs and co-captain Andrew Lutterloh at 215 lbs who each placed third, and Andrew Baehre at 135 lbs, Michael Rodriguez at 145 lbs, and Andrew Bladen at 171 lbs, who each placed fourth.
As a team, the Cardinals were looking for a strong third place finish, but placed fourth, matching last year’s performance. The fastest pin of the day was accomplished by Michael Rodriguez, who pinned his PVI opponent in :27. The most pins of the day were achieved by Andrew Lutterloh, who pinned two of his four opponents during the day.
Our next wrestling event will be the St. Albans Tournament beginning on Friday, February 11, 2010. This is a two-day tournament that will feature 30 or more schools from throughout the DC area and a couple from New Jersey/Pennsylvania. It is a very prestigious tournament and will represent a difficult day for both wrestler and parent. Wrestling will begin at 10:00AM at St. Albans School (3001 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, DC 20016).
