Girls drop a pair in WCAC basketball action

Sophomore Michelle Montgomery (11) drives in a game versus Elizabeth Seton. Montgomery had a team-high 8 pts in the SJC game.

Preseason conference favorite, St Johns, visited Godley Gym and the Cardinals Tuesday and handed the Ireton girls a 56-31 setback.  Led by Niya Beverley’s 15 points, the Cadets broke out to a 22-6 first period lead and were off the races.

The Cardinals couldn ‘t get untracked offensively and fell behind 34-10 at the intermission.  They scored in single digits again in the third period, to trail 50-18 at the end of three.  Ireton did get scoring from nine different players in the, including a team-high 8 from sophomore Michelle Montgomery and junior Alex Stipano. Ileana Gutierrez and Isabelle Kendall each contributed three points, but the Cardinals had only a bucket each from the remaining five players who scored.

Sarah Overcash added 9 for St Johns, Raley Hinton and Britani Stowe each had 7 for the visiting Cadets.  With the win St Johns improved to 11-2 in the WCAC and 16-5 overall.

On Senior Night, the Cardinals said farewell to five seniors playing their final regular season game in Godley Gym when the Tartans of Holy Cross visited Alexandria.  The five, including Isabelle Kendall, Kelly Gallagher, Ileana Gutierrez, Heather Pearson, and Kellen Phillips, were introduced before the start of the contest escorted by the parents to the gym’s center court.

Ireton played a determined defensive game early, but the offense once again was as cold as the winter’s north wind, falling behing 13-5 after a period of play and 31-14 at halftime.  The Cadets tough defense stymied Ireton into  the  the third frame and the Cardinals trailed 50-19 as the game entered the final period of play and the eventual 63-30 final.

Holy Cross’ Jillian Dunston led all scorers with 17 points and the nearly unstoppable Rhamat Alhassan, a 6’5″ center and Florida Gator-bound volleyball player, had 15 points, mostly from inside the paint on offensive rebounds, as well as more than a half dozen blocked shots.  Alex Stipano paced the Cardinals with 14 , Michelle Montgomery had 5, and Shannon Corridon added 4.

Ireton fell to 6-19 for the campaign, still looking for their first conference win with four games remaining.  Meanwhile, the Tartans improved to 12-13, 9-7 in the rugged WCAC.

Sunday begins a string of four consecutive road games for the girls, starting with a matinee at Bishop McNamara.  Tuesday is a road trip to Leonardtown to battle St Mary’s Ryken, followed by a Thursday date with Good Counsel and a regular season ending trip to St John’s on Saturday.  First round WCAC tournament action begins on Thursday, February 20th and possible state playoff bids remain to be determined.

Cardinals fall to St Johns, Gonzaga in hectic week of hoops

Senior Patrick Moseh (2) scores over DeMatha's Joseph Hampton (25). Moseh inked with Wheeling Jesuit.

Bishop Ireton ended a week of consecutive games with the area’s top ranked clubs, including two in three days with number one St Johns, with an 80-66 setback at Gonzaga Friday.

For the Cardinals, they were tested by arguably the WCAC’s top squad this season on Tuesday and again Thursday.  At their best, Ireton played the Cadets evenly.  But given an opportunity, St Johns can break open a game and run away from an opponent, and they did just that.   The visiting Cardinals were down 14-12 after one period, only to see the home team bolt to a 21-11 second period to go to intermission 35-23.  They widened the advantage to 19 after 3 quarters and cruised home for the 72-53 victory in Gallagher Gym.

A weather delay prevented a rare high school home-and-home with the Cadets on consecutive days, nonetheless the teams gathered Thursday to finish the season series.  Once again, the teams played nearly dead even in the start, St Johns clinging to a 21-19 margin after one,  before Ireton went on a run to gain a 5-point cushion.  The teams went to the half with Ireton sitting on a tenuous 33-31 lead.  It was “bombs away” as the Cadets stormed out of the locker room and grabbed a 46-41 lead.  They kept pressuring the Cardinals and the grayhound fast Cadets soon built the score to 61-43  with 2:32  remaining and again locked up a 20-point win, 69-49. The sweep of the Cardinals improved St Johns to 22-1, 12-1 in WCAC play while the Cardinals fell to 13-11, 4-10 in the league. Ireton’s trio of Jamie Senft, Patrick Moseh, and Dan Noe scored in double figures in both games, Senft with a dozen and team-high 13 in game two, while Noe had 12 and 11. Moseh led the team with 17 in DC and added 11 in the home game.

Friday, with their third game in four days, Moseh again led the Cardinals in scoring with a game-high 22, Noe added 17 and senior Ty Quarles had 16.  But it was the home-standing Eagles of Gonzaga that saw Bryant Crawford drop 21 and sidekick Chris Lykes had 20, Sam Miller with 13 that spelled the difference in the purple guys’ 80-66 win on Eye Street.   It was the most points surrendered by the Cardinals all season.

The Eagles broke to a 19-14 first period lead, the clubs played a high octane second stanza with Gonzaga still up five at intermission, 40-35.  The Cardinals came out cold in the third and paid the price as a 5 point deficit ballooned to 13, with Gonzaga racing to a 55-42 margin.  The fourth period saw another high scoring quarter but little changed as the home team retired for the night with a 14 point win to improve to 10-14, 6-9 in league play, while Ireton suffered its 10th conference setback against four wins.

Sunday begins the sprint to the finish with four conference games in six days, all in the friendly confines of Ireton’s Godley Gym.  McNamara visits for a 3:30 matinee before Ryken and Carroll visit on Tuesday, Wednesday. Both are 7pm tipoffs.  Good Counsel winds up Ireton’s regular season on the Cardinals’ senior night Friday. Festivities will begin at 7:15 and tipoff at 7:30.

Lovisone earns 2d in WCAC wrestling championships

Sophomore Tre Lovisone at 190 earned a WCAC second place, after pinning second seeded Jamie Hunter of DeMatha in the semifinals.

Sophomore Tre Lovisone earned a second place finish in the 2014 Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Wrestling championship at DeMatha’s Convocation Center on Saturday.  Good Counsel swept away the competition to win their third title in four years.  The tourney also marked the final appearance for the Conference’s senior coach, **** Messier of DeMatha who will retire at the season’s conclusion.

Bishop Ireton also earned fourth place finishes from senior Conor Reilly and sophomore Max Russell at 113 and 106 respectively.  For Lovisone, it was a strong run for the third seeded 195 pounder, who pinned second seeded Jamie Hunter of DeMatha in 4:33  before he squared off with Good Counsel’s top seeded Kevin Snyder, younger brother of Kyle Snyder, who now spends his senior year in Colorado Springs at the US Olympic training facility.  Kevin proved to be quite a talent as well winning the title with a technical fall 23-8 over Lovisone in the championship.

For Coach Don Dight’s young grapplers it was a dual meet season of  experience-gaining growth. They posted a 12-10 dual meet mark for the campaign and look to have a number of returning letterwinners for the seasons ahead.  For the Cardinals the St. Albans Invitational is set for Friday and Saturday followed by the VISAA state tournament in the Tidewater area the following weekend.  Depending upon the invitations, Bishop Ireton will end the season after states, with a possible trip to LeHigh for National Preps dependent upon the wrestlers success at their final two tournaments.

Cardinals fall just short in 51-48 setback to DeMatha

Bishop Ireton's Patrick Moseh (2) became the third Cardinal senior headed for college hoops when he committed to Wheeling Jesuit

Although Daniel Noe put 24 points on the scoreboard, the Cardinals fell to DeMatha 51-48.   DeMatha locked in the win in the fourth quarter on a three-pointer from Corey Henson.

The Cardinals closed out the first half 23-19 on the heels of a 13-2 run. However, it wasn’t enough to overcome DeMatha’s 32 points in the final two quarters of the game.  The Stags turned the game in the third quarter on a strange play that yielded a rare six-point possession. With Ireton nursing a 32-28 lead, a layup by DeMatha was followed immediately by a technical foul on the Cardinals. Following a pair of successful free throws and a jumper on the subsequent possession following the free throws, the Cards came back into their  offensive zone down 34-32.

Patrick Moseh,  newly commited to Wheeling Jesuit, also had a strong game for Ireton with 18 points.  Also chipping in for the Cardinals were Chandler Wilder (1 point, 2 rebounds), Nicholas Schmelzer (2 points, 1 rebound) and Ty Quarles (3 points).

The Cardinals (13-8, 4-7) finished the game with 28 rebounds (11 offensive/17 defensive).  DeMatha, (18-2, 9-2) were led by Corey Henson and Brock Ruble, each with 10 points.

No rest for the redbirds in the WCAC, as they travel to St. Johns for a Tuesday showdown, and return to Godley Gym the following night to make up an earlier snow delayed contest with the Cadets.  Both varsity tilts are slated for 7:30 tipoffs.

Cardinals bounce FCS in girls hoops

Junior Alex Stipano had another big day from beyond the arc, raining in 3's in a lopsided win over FCS.

Alex Stipano scored 20 points and Cece Leone added 19, helping the Cardinals notch a 75-30 victory over Fredericksburg Christian School on Saturday.  Bishop Ireton  had an early scoring surge, claiming a 39-13 lead at the half.  Despite substituting liberally throughout the game, the home team had a dominating performance from start to finish, with a season-high 10 players scoring in the contest, including 21 points in the fourth quarter.

Also chipping in for the Cardinals were Paige Russell (10 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal), Shannon Corridon (9 points, 3 steals), Heather Pearson (5 points), Keyarna Frederick (4 points, 1 steal), Hannah Miller (2 points, 4 rebounds), Kellen Phillips (2 points, 1 rebound), Charlotte Sofield (2 points, 3 rebounds) and Isabelle Kendall (2 points). Ileana Gutierrez was a big contributor as well, racking up four rebounds and four steals.  Ireton finished the game with 33 rebounds (18 offensive/15 defensive) and 13 steals.

Next up for the Cardinals is St. Johns College High School. The Cadets are coming off a tough loss to 5th ranked Elizabeth Seton, dropping them into third place in the WCAC, behind PVI and Seton. Tipoff of the varsity game is set for 7:30pm.
