Cardinals land 6 on VISAA all state team

Senior Hudson Sullivan (5) is an all state player for the third year.

Senior linebacker Hudson Sullivan, sidelined for almost half of Bishop Ireton’s 2013 football season, led a group of six Cardinals who were honored by the Virginia Independent School Athletic Association (VISAA) football coaches this month as all state players. Sullivan, a team captain and three-time all-state linebacker, was a second team selection along with fellow linebacker Josh Ammon. Ammon, an honorable mention All Met selection by the Washington Post, led the Cardinals in solo tackles and assists this past season.

Head Coach Tony Verducci noted that his fellow competitors and coaches had great respect for Sullivan’s outstanding level of play before he sustained an injury to his foot during the first half of the sixth game of the season. “At the time he was injured, Hudson led the state as well as our team in a number of statistical areas, including total tackles. Coaches remembered that Hudson was a first team selectee last year and saw fit to include him as a second team honoree this year.”

While football enthusiasts and college coaches were well aware of Sullivan before the Cardinals opened the season with a 21 – 2 victory over Park View, there were very few people outside of the Ireton football program who knew that Josh Ammon was another force to be reckoned with as a linebacker. Defensive Coordinator Jerton Evans, an All American safety at the University of Virginia, explained that, “Josh opened everyone’s eyes from the very first day he arrived at Bishop Ireton. He’s an incredibly hard worker who truly plays every snap with maximum effort! It was great to see his effort respected by the Washington Post and the VISAA coaches.”

Senior Offensive lineman Taylor Dean was also awarded second team honors for his consistently outstanding play at right tackle. Like Sullivan, Dean hopes to make a decision in the coming months about the school at which he will continue his education and playing career. Dean gave Ireton quarterbacks Andrew Latrash and Chandler Wilder enough time for junior wide receiver Drew Smith to catch a school record 47 passes this fall. Offensive coordinator Joe Blaszkow shared his observations about the 2013 second team all-state wide receiver, noting that, “As the season wore on it became evident that opponents were focused on trying to limit the number of touches Drew had in games. He’s a smart and focused player who still found a way to make plays for us.”

Sophomore defensive back Corey Johnson was another Cardinal who took flight this season. He tied for the VISAA lead in interceptions with six, which led to his being selected for second team honors as a defensive back. Senior kicker Matt Bocchi was almost perfect on extra points (13 of 14) and nailed 4 of 6 field goal attempts as well; his production led to his selection as an honorable mention all-state kicker.

While Sullivan, Dean and Bocchi will be missed, Associate Head Coach Charlie Meyers looks forward to having Ammon, Smith and Johnson back for the 2014 campaign, “Josh, Drew and Corey are great examples of the character traits that lead to success on the field and in life. Josh is a poster child for hard work, Drew brings attention to detail and Corey overcomes adversity through perseverance. We’ll lean on them and many other outstanding returning letter winners as we prepare to soar next fall.”

Knights Pull Away for Win, 65-53

Senior Dan Noe led all scorers with 23 points, but O'Connell scored the game's final 8 points to win by 12 Tuesday.

Both teams went toe-to-toe on Tuesday, with Bishop O’Connell scoring the game’s final 8 points, outlasting the Cardinals 65-53.  On a three-pointer from Jamaal King, Bishop O’Connell secured their lead in the third quarter.

The Cardinals opened the game with a 7-2 run, then fell behind,  trailing 32-24 by the half.   The Cardinals exploded out of the locker room in the third quarter to take a 35-34 lead midway through the period, only to see Bishop O’Connell rebound to a 43-41 advantage heading into the final stanza.

The game remained a nip and tuck affair, the Knights clinging to a 50-46 advantage heading into the games final minutes.  The Knights finished strong, however, with a 15-7 run to win the rivalry contest in Alexandria.

Melo Trimble broke away to lead Bishop O’Connell’s offense with 18 points, including nine during the fourth period.  Ireton’s Dan Noe got the Cardinals off to a great start, putting seven points of his game-high 23 on the scoreboard in the first period.  Patrick Moseh had 14 for Ireton, Jamie Senft added 10, Jeremiah Brooks had three and Jeremy Guilland a bucket.

Jamaal King (11 points) and Ako Adams (8) all had multiple three-pointers. Also scoring for Bishop O’Connell were Oumar Barry (6 points), Randall Gaskins (4) and Lewis Djonkam (2).

Washington and Lee visit Father Godley Gym on Thursday for a varsity only contest. Tipoff is set for 6pm.

Girls hoops grab a win in hectic weekend of basketball

Junior Alex Stipano (3) dribbles down court in earlier action. She marked her return to the lineup with 19 points in a loss at Archbishop Carroll Thursday in a game postponed by weather earlier.

Junior Alex Stipano’s return to the lineup Thursday for Bishop Ireton coincided with their biggest offensive output of the young season in a high scoring 74-65 setback to Archbishop Carroll in the first of three games in three days for the Cardinals as winter weather got an early start on disrupting the schedule.  The Cardinals suffered somewhat of a scoring drought the following night while hosting Bishop McNamara, but rebounded to collect their second win of the year at Virginia Beach’s Bishop Sullivan on Saturday.

The WCAC opener for both teams was an entertaining affair with Stipano one of seven Cardinals to score in the contest. Her 19 led Ireton and Michelle Montgomery also scored in double figures for the Cards.  Cece Leone added 9, Ileana Gutierrez chipped in 7, Charlotte Sofield had 5, Isabelle Kendal 4, and Danielle Hatchett had a bucket.  The Lions had four players in double figures, including Tyasia Moore with a game-high 22.

Carroll jumped out to a 21-15 lead after one period, but Ireton rallied in the second stanza to close the gap to 32-30 at intermission. The Lions returned in the second half to steady their performance and gradually improve their advantage to the eventual 9-point win, though the Cardinals had their moments.

Ireton returned home Friday night to a much more defensive-minded Bishop McNamara squad that stymied the Cardinals offense in the first half, bolting to a 24-13 first half advantage. The Cardinals again had a strong third period, outscoring the Mustangs 17-14 behind sophomore Michelle Montgomery’s team-high 14 points, but the visitors raced away with a 24-point 4th quarter to upend the hosts by a final count of 62-47.

Cece Leone joined Montgomery in double figures with 11, Kendall had 7 and Gutierrez 6. McNamara didn’t allow Stipano another big night, holding the junior to 5, while Keyama  Frederick had a pair and sophs Shannon Corridon and Paige Russell each added a free throw in the loss.

A weary bunch boarded a coach bus early Saturday for Virginia Beach, but they got off the bus and went straight to work in opening up a 13-4 first quarter lead. The Crusaders counterattacked with a 7 point second quarter advantage to go to the locker room down only 24-22.

The break worked well for the Cardinals who came out hard in the third to break the game open at 37-28 after three quarters. They would continue to pull away in the final session to garner the 47-34 non conference win, improving their record to 2-4, 0-2 in WCAC play.

Balanced scoring was highlight of the ballgame, with 7 different Cardinals again scoring in the contest.  Cece Leone led the visitors with 15 points, Kendall added 8, as did Stipano.  Montgomery had 7, Russell had 4, Gutierrez 3 and senior Heather Pearson added 2 for the winners.

Next up for the Cardinals is rival Bishop O’Connell on Tuesday before top ranked Paul VI hosts the Alexandria school on Saturday with a 3:30 matinee on the schedule for the varsity tipoff, part of a triple header afternoon of action.

Maday 1st Team Washington Post allMet for soccer, 3 honorably mentioned

Senior Adrienne Maday(10) in action against PVI in the home finale, a 3-2 win for the Cardinals.

William and Mary-bound senior, Adrienne Maday was selected for the Washington Post’s prestigious soccer first team, all Met award Sunday.

Sophomore teammate Lilly Weber was also recognized as a forward, while senior Andrew Perham was honorably mentioned as a goalkeeper.  Junior Josh Ammon was also named as an honorable mention at linebacker for the Cardinals in football.

Maday, with a three game-winning goals was a great selection in the eyes of her coach, Gino Leon.   “Very deserving, a great player who had a wonderful four years with the team.” said Leon.  “I was so happy for her.”

The high flying Cardinals spent most of the girls soccer season perched in the Washington Post’s top 10, rising as high as number 6, and the recognition of Weber is a positive sign for the Cardinals in the opinion of athletic director Bill Simmons.  “Coach Leon is doing a great job, we have a good group of exceptionally talented young players as the selection of Lilly demonstrates.  This team is going to continue to have players considered all Met for some years to come.”

The boys soccer team enjoyed its best season in many years and the play of senior Andrew Perham in goal had a large part to play in their success.  Like the girls, Perham was a first team, all WCAC selection.  The boys qualified for the VISAA playoffs for the first time in a number of years and opened with an upset of #6 St Christophers in penalty kicks before falling in the second round to Norfolk Academy.

Coach Tony Verducci’s linebackers were among the strongest aspects of the 2013 football Cardinals. “I just loved to watch number 5 (Hudson Sullivan) and number 44 (Ammon) play linebacker when I watched the film.” commented a rival coach prior to a regular season game at Fannon Field. “I just hope they don’t play that well against us!”  Like Weber, Ammon returns to the Cardinals for the 2014 campaign.

The Washington Post recognition is based upon input from coaches, writers, and statistics compiled each season in the Post’s exhaustive allMet section.   They solicit input from schools and coaches to prepare their selections, notify honorees, with the first team gathering for individual and team photos.  Each June all the year’s honorees will gather for a luncheon hosted by the Washington Post.

Crew Christmas sales brighten Season preparations

Crew Christmas tree all decorated and ready for Santa!

The annual  Bishop Ireton Crew Christmas tree and wreath sales overcame challenging weather to again send patrons home for holiday preparations with fresh evergreen decorations.

Organizer Jim Gwiazda reported nearly a hundred wreaths were sold and nearly 40 trees during the 48 hours of sales Friday night through Sunday.

“The Friday night weather was miserable, but I wanted to get first crack at the selection,” reported athletic director, Bill Simmons. “Plus, my friends asked me to find them a good tree for their house and I wanted to make sure they were happy again this year. It was the 4th year in a row they have bought an Ireton tree!”

Easily Ireton’s most expensive program, the crew handles a number of fundraisers during the year, with volunteers coming from the rowers, their parents, and other supporters of the program.   After more than ten years of tree sales, it will take more than an evening of rain or cold weather to slow them down.  And, as the photo attests, the result is a sight to behold!

Swimmers tangle with Richmond area teams

Cardinals tangled with St Christophers, Woodberry Forest among 4 opponents Saturday.

With a short lineup, Bishop Ireton went  2-2 in boys dual matches and 2-1 in girls’  action with Richmond’s best private school swim teams. “We were a little short handed this weekend, but our swimmers swam well and we continue to qualify athletes for state and Catholic nationals.” commented head coach John Gullickson.

For the day, Ireton’s boys topped The Covenant School 109 – 54 and Seton School of Manassas 123 – 47.  The Cardinals did experience a 136 – 40 pasting by St. Christophers of Richmond and a 108 – 68 setback to Woodberry Forest. The girls topped Seton 114 – 69 and The Covenant School 136 – 40, but were handled by the defending state champions, St. Catherine’s 127 -58.

“It was a good meet for us overall. We had some club swimmers away, which made a difference, but it was also an opportunity for other swimmers who stepped up and swam well.” said Gullickson.   “We qualified more swimmers for future championship meets, that was a very positive outcome as well.”

The meet was conducted as a combined meet and scores tallied from the results to yield the dual meet scores.  On the girls side, Ireton grabbed a second in the 200 medley relay behind St. Catherine’s with Hayley Snell, Anna Shumate, Anna Fracasso, and Catherine Kennedy finishing .83 of second behind for a state meet-qualifying time of 1:57.98.   The Cardinals also qualified a second team of freshman Angie Arquette-Overman, senior Alex Branham, Kaileen Rouin, and Mary Margaret Anthony with a time of 2:12.13.

Hayley Snell had a big day for the Cardinals, qualifying for state championships in four  events on the day, including the 200 medley relay, 200 free style relay, 50 yard freestyle, 2d place by .04 seconds, in a time of :26.76.  Her 4th place in the 100 free style was a qualifying :59.78, concluding a busy day for the junior.

Catherine Kennedy and Clara Boggs also qualified in the 50 free in times of :27.79 and :27.83 respectively.  Freshman Anna Shumate joined Snell qualifying for the 100 free in a time of 1:00.91, while Boggs earned her second of three qualifying times with a 6:09.81 in the 500 free style, good for a 5th fastest time in the event.  She followed that with Snell, Kennedy, freshman Emma Klein in the 200 free relay qualifying time of 1:48.15, good for a second overall on the day.  Klein earned another qualifying time in the 100 backstroke with a second place finish in a time of 1:03.81.  Klein, Fracasso, Shumate, and Boggs posted a qualifying time of 4:02.75 in their second place finish in the 400 freestyle relay.

Shumate grabbed a first in the 100 breaststroke in a season-best time of 1:12.33 for Ireton, the Cardinals sole first place individual winner.  Bishop Ireton placed three divers in the 1 meter event, with Alex Branham capturing third, Isabella Blanco a 5th, and Lauren Kennedy grabbing a 6th place.

In the boys’ events, the 200 medley relay qualified in a time of 1:49.35 on the shoulders of three juniors and a senior, Jimmy Grant, Ben Gorski, Carter Rostron, and Kevin Abbed. Gorski was edged for a first in the 200 yard free by .29 seconds when St. Chris’s Trey Berry won in a qualifying time of 1:50.04. The versatile workhorse, Gorski qualified for his third event of the day when his 5:08.96 earned him a second place in the 500 yard freestyle.

The 200 free relay was another qualifying time for the guys, as sophomores Sam Price and Michael Morrison teamed with Rostron and Abbed to earn a 5th place in a time of 1:39.88.  Ireton finished the day qualifying for the 400 free in a time of 3:41.38, a third place for Gorski, Price, Grant, and Morrison.

Cardinals surprise DeMatha, Roadrunners dash past girls in swimming

Girls surprised by the Roadrunners 100-70 at Trinity University in dual meet action.

The time sheets suggested a tight contest and it was everything forecast as Bishop Ireton edged DeMatha in a swimming dual meet, 86-84 at Trinity University Thursday.  The girls team, winners of the WMPSSDL relay carnival were upset 100-70 by Elizabeth Seton in the same meet.  It was Seton’s first win over the Cardinals in more than 6 years.

In a razor close boys’ meet, Ireton won two of three relays, and snared the second and third in the third relay event while Ryan Scott and Jimmy Grant swept the top 2 places in the 50 yard free, the only event where either team swept the top 2 places.  Grant, Scott, Kevin Abbed, and Carter Rostran posted a 5 second win over the Stags 200 medley team to open the meet before DeMatha’s Noah Gonzalez edged Michael Morrison by .05 seconds to win the 200 free. Ben Gorski raced passed Gonzalez to win the 200 IM for the Cardinals, Sam Price snaring a third to provide key team points.  AJ Salvatori earned a second place in the 100 butterfly, while Edward Crandall finished 5th for the redbirds.  DeMatha’s Brandon Lofton won the 100 free, but Grant, Rostron, and Abbed went 2, 4, 5 to mitigate the damage for Ireton.

Morrison blew away the competition in the 500 free to win the event in a time of 5:28.94, well ahead of the blue and red’s Dylan Buehler at 5:55.78.  DeMatha won their only relay, the 200 freestyle in 1:38.75, but the Cardinals bounced back to finish second and third, as the team of Grant, Abbed, Rostron, and Scott were only .72 of a second better than Ireton’s second squad of Micah McIntyre, Cory Conway, AJ Galindo, and Morrison.  Salvatori and Price went first and third in the backstroke while Gorski and Scott repeated the feat in the 100 breaststroke.  Ireton sealed the win when Morrison, Price, Salvatori, and Gorski won the final event of the evening, the 400 freestyle, the margin of victory for the Cardinal and gold.

Bishop Ireton’s girls had dominated the Bladensburg school in the past until the Roadrunners of Elizabeth Seton surprised the Cardinals 100 – 70 in the evening’s other dual action. Ireton opened with a win in the 200 medley with Hayley Snell, Anna Shumate, Emma Klein, and Clara Boggs, but the Roadrunners snapped up second and third.  The ‘runners followed with a sweep of the top three spots in the 20o free and Maya Dunbar of Seton edged Ireton’s Anna Fracasso. Again in the 50 free Seton’s Akeyla Holley topped Shumate for first, as did Tyla Jackson in getting in ahead of Snell in the 100 butterfly. In both events, Seton snared the third spot, denying key points from the Cardinals.

Emma Klein won the won the 100 free, but again the Roadrunners’ Holley and Dunbar managed a second and third in the event.  Elizabeth Seton scored a one, two in the 500 freestyle event and followed that up with a win in the 200 free relay.  Emma Tarnosky was just a .68 seconds better than Fracasso in the 100 backstroke and Kiara Leath topped Ireton’s Kaitlin Nguyen to win in the breaststroke event.  Seton ended the evening with a 2+ second relay win in the 400 free relay.  For the Cardinals it was the girls first setback on the young season after wins over Paul VI and St Mary’s Ryken.
