The Bishop Ireton Cardinals girls’ lacrosse defeated the visiting Norfolk Academy Bulldogs 17-6 last night at Fannon Field in a Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) quarterfinal state playoff game. The win means Bishop Ireton (17-5) plays Collegiate (15-6) in a semifinal matchup this Friday, May 17, 5:00 p.m., in Richmond. Bishop Ireton beat Collegiate 12-8 on March 16 in the Cardinals’ second game of the regular season.
The Bulldogs opened the scoring and held their last lead at 2-1 before Ireton regained a 2-2 tie in the game’s first ten minutes. The Cardinals regrouped however, and began to pull away, holding a 7-3 halftime advantage. The second-seeded Ireton continued the pressure in the second half, outscoring the 7th seeded visitors 10-3 in the game’s final 25 minutes.
Twelve different Cardinals received credit for goals and/or assists during the game, including four players who notched goal-scoring hat tricks. Junior Kendall Cunningham got 3 goals; sophomore Christine Macey scored 3 goals and had one assist; sophomores Kelly Matthews and Isabel Obregon each got 3 goals; freshman Grace Fletcher had one goal and one assist; senior Brenna Heaney and sophomore Natalie Irwin each got one goal; junior Catie Isham had 2 assists; freshman Kelly Larkin got goal and 4 assists; sophomore Charlotte Sofield had one goal and 2 assists; freshman Maggie Lohrer and sophomore Maggie Wiltsie each had one assist; and junior goalie Olivia Cole got 4 saves.
