Sophomore Andrew Selby was selected by the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference as a second team, all-conference outfielder, while teammates Cody Hagenston, Corey Phillips, Wes Jenkins, and Brian Lewis were named to the league’s honorable mention list.
Selby was selected the 2011 Cardinals’ most valuable player. With a .429 batting average in WCAC play, the versatile Selby switched from center field to shortstop midway through the season. He belted three home runs and led Ireton in 9 offensive categories.
Another super soph, Cody Hagenston, was the ace of the staff on the hill for the Cardinals. He posted an impressive 2.52 ERA in WCAC play in 5 starts in WCAC, all into the 5th inning, making quality starts for the redbirds.
Ireton’s third sophomore honoree, Corey Phillips, started behind the plate for the Cardinals, hitting .321 on the year, second on the team. The durable Phillips played every inning behind the plate.
Senior Wes Jenkins was a Co-captain and starting 2nd basemen for the Cambridge Road school. The steady infielder was strong presence up the middle for Ireton and a leader on the field for the Cardinals. He is headed to Campbell University to play baseball next year.
Senior Brian Lewis, Bishop Ireton’s other co-captain started at shortstop and 1st base this year. Lewis, a 3-year starter for the Cardinals, was a veteran leader and an anchor on the infield. He and Jenkins are key positions to be replaced, but Coach Mike Gallagher has a strong stable of players returning to make the 2012 campaign a bright one for Bishop Ireton.
