Hockey grabs pair of wins to open new year

The Bishop Ireton Ice Hockey team began 2010 the same way it ended 2009 – with a pair of victories.  The wins included a 6-2 thumping of a previously undefeated Robinson team in a non-league scrimmage, and a 6-0 whitewashing of a combined South Lakes/Marshall squad in a NVSHL tilt that allowed the Cardinals to remain undefeated in league play with a record of 5-0.

Monday, January 4th, saw a determined Robinson team come calling at the Mount Vernon Ice Rink.  The Cardinals offense was in high gear from the start, testing the Robinson goalie early and often.  When all was said and done, the Ireton scorers were led by William Chastain with a goal and 3 assists, Tom Cyrnak with 2 goals and 1 assist, Reid Yager with 2 goals, and Dillon Roach who contributed a goal and an assist.  Single assists were also credited to Dave Souliotis, Ben Gerke, Robert Chastain and Tom Casey.  Robert Chastain picked up the victory in net, his 6th of the season.

The Cardinals’ winning ways continued on Friday night, January 8th, with their first NVSHL game of the calendar year.  The South Lakes/Marshall squad brought a lot of speed to the contest at Mount Vernon Ice Rink, but that speed didn’t translate into much offense.  In a game that featured a combined 23 penalties between the teams, the Cardinals offense simply proved to be too much for the South Lakes team to handle.  When the dust had settled, the Cardinals potent offense outshot the Seahawks, 40-18, led once again by Reid Yager with 2 goals and 2 assists, and Tom Cyrnak with 2 goals and 1 assist.  Also scoring goals for Ireton were Dillon Roach and Joe Lavelle with one each, while single assists were recorded by Dan Tangora, Ben Gerke and James Smith.  Robert Chastain was solid in net, picking up his 7th victory and 3rd shutout of the 2009-10 campaign.

The Cardinals next game is Friday night, January 15th, against Yorktown at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex
