Cardinals Dominate the Knights, 57-17

The Cardinals rode 7 falls and 2 forfeit wins to a 57-17 thrashing of the defending WCAC wrestling team champions, Bishop O’Connell in Godley Gym Monday morning. Led by senior Kevin Galloway’s pin of freshman Ray Davies in 17 seconds and Elliot Mondragon’s pin in 19 seconds, the Alexandrians put the most one-sided dual loss on their rivals in many years.

Mondragon started the MLK Day morning off with a quick pin, but junior Jacob Ramos of O’Connell scored a major decision over Ireton’s Darcy Gomez to pull the Knights to within 6-4. The Knights forfeited at 119 then senior Andrew Georgeieff held off sophomore Charles DiGiulian 7-6 to up the Cardinal advantage to 15-4. O’Connell’s Dale Mullane won a wild 10-7 win over Corey Phillips at 130 pounds, riding the Cardinal freshman for the entire third period to nail down the decision.

Ireton’s Nick Womack pinned Curt Hansen in 47 seconds of the first period to regain the momentum for the home team and DJO forfeited the 140 weight class, ballooning the advantage to 27-7. Captain Joe Vitale added a pin at 2:19 over Kyle Soriente and Ryan Delaney pinned Gabe Perez to push the lead to 39-7. Knight senior Luke Milligan handlled Scott Martin in the 160 bout, but Galloway, sophomore Andrew Lutterloh, and senior Jake Manley closed the meet with first period falls to pad the sizeable margin for Ireton. The Cardinals, battling injuries, forfeited at 215.

Fresh off the toughest dual meet schedule in recent years at the Cavalier Duals, where the Cardinals went 3-5 against some of the toughest wrestling teams in the area, including Old Mill, Archbishop Spalding, and Arundel High School, the squad looked ready for their diocesan rivals. The Cardinals topped George Mason, Northeast High School and Joe Vitale’s key win led the cardinal and gold by Stone Bridge 35-33 over the long weekend.
