Mustangs Shutout Cardinals, 4-0

by Hana Beckerle, DCSportsFan

As the WCAC regular season draws to a close, Bishop McNamara made a strong statement Tuesday with a 4-0 shutout win over Bishop Ireton in Alexandria. The victory leaves McNamara with a 7-6-4 record in league play with one regular season game left to play.

“We wanted to finish the season strong,” said senior Maxwell Allegro. “We needed this win to pump us up before the playoffs.”

The teams appeared fairly evenly matched until the final ten minutes of the first half. Allegro scored two goals within a couple minutes of each other, one off of a corner kick by senior Ryan Leslie and the second off of a pass from teammate junior Andrew DeGennaro.

Senior midfielder Mayowa Alli of McNamara received a yellow card after running into Ireton senior Evan Guidry shortly before the half ended. Alli left the game after the call, but he returned to play in the second half.

Junior Francis Massa replaced senior Arthur Deegan in goal for the Cardinals in the second half, and Massa had a nice save in the first ten minutes, but McNamara senior Matthew Malecki’s shot a few minutes later sailed just past his fingertips to put the Mustangs up 3-0. Malecki’s goal came off of a pass by senior Matthew Michael.

Allegro scored the final goal of the match when he pounded in a rebound from a deflected shot by teammate senior Gregory Carbott. Carbott had a couple of shots throughout the match and put pressure on the Cardinals’ defense.

Ireton’s most notable player was sophomore defender Nick Galdos, who was all over the field and had several key plays for the Cardinals.

A few Ireton players were slow to rise or needed assistance after collisions during the game. Junior Sebastian Spinetto left the game with a knee injury about halfway through the first half, and he was later carted around the field and out of the stadium.

The Cardinals fall to 2-13-2 in WCAC games and sit near the bottom of league rankings. Ireton hosts St. John’s, the only team in the league with a worse record, Friday to finish the season.

The Mustangs are 7-6-4 in league play and wrap up the regular season by hosting St. Mary’s Ryken this Friday. When the Mustangs met Ryken met last month the result was a 2-2 tie.

“We think we’ll be well prepared. We’re going to come out with intensity and hopefully get another win,” said Allegro.

Scoring Summary
McNamara Goals: Maxwell Allegro (3), Matthew Malecki
Saves: Jeff Meekins (4)

Ireton Saves: Arthur Deegan (3), Francis Massa (3)

Cardinals Rebound in Richmond, 17-7

Bishop Ireton’s latest stop on “homecoming tour 2009” was Richmond for St Christophers’ alumni gathering, the 4th of five straight homecoming contests Ireton will play this fall. It was an overcast, dreary day, not improved by the visitors’ 17-7 win over the Saints.  Again, the defense set the pace for the Cardinals, with their third shutout of the season, giving up fewer than 150 yards total offense to St Chris, who was averaging better than 300 yards offense in winning 3 of their previous 4 games.  Dom Puglise had an interception late in the game to seal the outcome and Anthony Rivers picked off a Saints aerial to thwart the final drive of the first half.

Coach Tony Verducci liked the play of both his quarterbacks, and indeed, it was the best game of the season from quarterbacks Mike Larrabee, 14 of 23 for 130 yards, and Oliver Noon, 3 of 4 for 44 yards and 1 TD.

Teams traded possessions without threatening to score until Ireton’s defense forced their fourth consecutive “three and out” with two minutes left in the half. Doug Vines got the Cardinals started with an 8 yard run before Larrabee found Conlin McCallister for a 7 yard gain and a big first down. Noon entered the game and threw his only incomplete pass of the day before he found McCallister for 8 yards, setting up a 3rd and 2 from the Saints 28 with less than a minute to play. Noon found Mark Holmes, playing for the first time in a month since re-injuring a collar bone against Woodberry Forest, down the right sideline for the game’s first score.

The Cardinals gave the hosts an easy 7 on the first series of the second half when LB Kyle Wittenauer stepped in front of an intended receiver and rambled 15 yards for a touchdown. The turnover seemed to jump start the Cardinal offense for the remainder of the third quarter. Holmes and Vines made a number of big plays in a drive that culminated with Larrabee booting a 29 yard FG to give Ireton a lead it would not relinquish. The Cardinals’ next drive was a things of beauty, covering 82 yards in 7 plays with plays of more than 20 yards from sophomore Moses Webb (a 20 yard catch and run for a first down), sophomore Malcolm Westbrook (a 28 yard catch and run), and Larrabee’s 33 yard QB draw to paydirt.

The Cardinal defense slammed the door shut with about 5 minutes to play when senior captain Dom Puglise intercepted a ball at the 2-yard line. Vines and junior Tommy Gallinaro made key plays and helped the Cardinals take the ball to mid-field before Noon took a knee to end it.   The Cardinals (5-2) now head to Wilson High School where they will play Sidwell Friends School at the Quakers homecoming contest, a 2pm start, before returning home for a final time this campaign to host Friendship Edison Collegiate Academy on Senior Day.  Bishop Ireton will host a middle school skills clinic in conjunction with the finale.

Ireton tops Ryken 2-1

On a raw, 45-degree day with rain mistiing throughout, St Mary Ryken’s boys (6-9-2, 5-7-2)made their second trip to Alexandria this season and again left one goal short in a hard fought 2-1 contest.  Both schools agreed that playing a second time on Ireton’s turf field to be a better option than playing on a soaked natural grass field in Leonardtown and postponing the game into the final week of the season was even less appealing.

The teams battled through a scoreless first half though Ireton (4-12-2, 2-12-2) controlled the game early with a big advantage on shots on goal and four corner kicks in the opening period.  Senior Evan Guidry, who played one of his best games of the season, set the tone early for the Cardinals dribbling through a pair of defenders before being stopped literally on the goal line just 5 minutes into the game.  Ryken got their chances, including Adam Miller’s header off the crossbar on a Knight corner kick.

SMR stormed out of the gate as the second half started but several scoring chances were missed with a wide open net beckoning. Shots wide, blocked by Cardinals, and sensational saves by Arthur Deegan and Frankie Massa, who shared net minding duties, kept Ryken off the scoreboard in the first half. Deegan came up huge for Ireton on a point blank blast by SMR junior  Benjamin Allston only 8 minutes into the second half and Massa denied sophomore Christopher Lawrence as the Knights looked to take the lead in the second half.

With 14:30 remaining in the contest, Ireton broke the scoring drought when junior Cameron Foster sent a picture perfect crossing pass to freshman Elliot Fantino who headed the ball into the corner of  the net for a 1-0 Cardinal lead.  The Knights were energized by the goal, however, and just two minutes later Ryken’s Lawrence pounced on a loose ball pinballing through the goalkeeper’s box and drilled it to tie the contest, 1-1.

Ryken gained momentum from the score, but the Cardinals counterattacked with junior Dan O’Keefe unloading a big shot beyond 30 yards right on goal. It was blocked by the Knight’s keeper, but only straight into the air and knocking the goalie back into his net.  Evan Guidry was right there for Ireton and calmly headed the ball into a wide open goal for the game winner with 7:56 remaining.

Vines named Alexandria Sportsman of the Month

Alexandria Sportsman’s Club president Marc Leon announced Thursday that Bishop Ireton running back Doug Vines has been selected as the male athlete of the month in Alexandria by the organization. Vines will be the Club’s guest at their monthly meeting at the Potomac Boat Club, 1 King Street, Alexandria on Tuesday, October 20th. Meeting begins at 7pm and is open the public.

This month’s meeting is “Redskins Night” and a number of former Redskins are scheduled to appear.  Coach Tony Verducci will make the introduction of Vines and Mr. Leon will present the Ireton senior with the Club’s award.

The Sportsman’s Club is one of the premier athletic clubs in the metropolitan area dedicated to supporting high school athletics, particularly Alexandria high schools, and presents end-of-the-year awards and scholarships to City athletes at a gala each May.

Vines, Ireton’s all purpose back has the unique situation of having scored in nearly every possible fashion in the first six games of the season. With a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in Saturday’s game at St Albans, he adds to the list that includes a punt return for a score against rugged Woodberry Forest, a school record 97-yard interception for a TD against Archbishop Carroll in the season opener, he caught a pass for a touchdown against St Stephens, and rushed for a touchdown against a number of teams, most recently Bullis in Ireton’s 28-0 homecoming win.

The Alexandria native has been a three year letterwinner coming into the current season and a starter for the last two seasons.

Thud! Cardinals fall flat at St Albans 24-6

Bishop Ireton (4-2), is no stranger to playing in homecoming games after the third consecutive weekend, but Saturday’s homecoming game at St Albans (2-3) also marked the Centennial celebration for the elite Washington DC private school for boys.  If the capacity crowd and the weeklong activities distracted the Bulldogs, Coach Gary Schnell’s squad didn’t show it. For the Cardinals, however, the game never seemed to come into focus.

The Cardinals started well when they  took the opening kickoff and smartly marched to inside the Bulldog 5-yardline with Mike Larrrabee guiding Ireton down the field with crisp passes to Tommy Kestermann, Moses Webb, and a great grab by Tommy Gallinaro.  The first of a long string of miscues befell the Cards as a botched short field goal attempt resulted in turnover to the home squad on their own 13 yardline.

St Albans was stopped on their first drive and punted to Ireton. The Cardinals’ second drive from the Ireton 37 went nowhere and the teams would trade punts. Ireton went back to work and Doug Vines’ first appearance on the field yielded a 43-yard touchdown run, only to be negated by the first of a number of holding calls Tony Verducci’s squad would receive on the afternoon.  The drive stalled and the home team took over on their 29 yard line early in the second period.

The cardinal and gold defense would again hold St Albans and a 54-yard punt would give Ireton the ball on the Cardinals’ 20. With Oliver Noon at quarterback, the Cardinals went back to work and moved the ball into Albans’ territory only to see Ireton’s second holding penalty rescue the Bulldogs when the defense seemingly couldn’t.  Ireton then punted the ball away.

St Albans took over with 5:22 left in the scoreless contest at their own 14 yard line. Schnell gambled on 4 & 1 on his own 25, sending senior Todd Bracken on a fullback dive for the necessary yardage, keeping the drive alive. The Bulldog offensive line began to wear down the Ireton defense, and as the drive continued, fullback Mike Cogo burst up the middle and lumbered just over 50 yards for an apparent touchdown, only to see a late holding penalty rob him of the score but set the Bulldogs in business deep in Ireton territory. Three plays later senior Rob Sniezek would score the half’s only touchdown to count and junior Chris Smith would add the PAT to send the hosts to the locker room with a slim 7-0 advantage.

Schnell’s squad took the opening kickoff to start the second half with the obvious goal of controlling the line of scrimmage and the game with a ball control offense. With Fritz Parker, Mike Cogo, and Jimmy Cahill sharing the load with the day’s workhorse, running back Rob Sniezek, the Bulldogs marched methodically on the ground. Only when senior quarterback Henry Brooke rolled out into a 10-yard sack did Ireton find the ability to stop the St Albans drive.

The tired Ireton unit got no help from the offense. Ireton finally touched the ball in the third quarter, only 6:05 remained. It took less than 2 minutes and another three and out for the Cardinals and St Albans was back to work.

Following the Kevin Galloway punt to the 27, Ireton had the Bulldogs third and eleven, only to see the all purpose Sniezek, who rushed for 131 yards on the ground and 24 through the air, haul in a Brooke pass and lumber to the 40 for a critical first down.  St. Albans continued to drive and eat clock into Ireton territory as the the game moved to the final quarter. Chris Smith missed a 41-yard field goal and Ireton took over on their own 20 with 11:50 left, down 7-0. The third Ireton holding penalty of the game stalled the redbirds and Ireton again quickly returned the ball to the DC school with just over 10 minutes remaining and the ball on the St Albans 45.

Sniezek pounded up the middle yet again for a 31-yard run and while Ireton would stiffen their defense, Smith kicked a 29-yard field goal to push the lead to 10-0. On the following possession Oliver Noon’s pass would be intercepted by junior Thomas Wheet and returned to the Ireton 24. Cogo would slam up the middle for 10 yards, then another Ireton penalty, this time for a face mask, would move the ball to the Ireton doorstep. Sniezek again pounded off tackle for a 5-yard touchdown and Smith’s PAT  upped the lead to 17-0.

The navy blue uniformed home team avoided Doug Vines most of the afternoon on kickoffs, but when Chris Smith’s kickoff drove the speedy Ireton senior inside the 10 yard line, the field opened for the Alexandria native. Breaking a number of tackles and bouncing on one leg to regain his balance after a missed tackle, Vines broke free at the Bulldog 45 and outran Smith down the sideline for the only tally Ireton would muster this day, 95-yards for the touchdown.  Perhaps typical of the futility the Cardinals experienced on Satterlee-Henderson Field Saturday, Mark Holmes extra point attempt went wide to the right, leaving Ireton down 17-6 with just under 6 minutes to play.

When Ireton senior Kevin Galloway stripped Brooke on a quarterback keeper with 4:51 left, the Cardinals suddenly had the ball back at near midfield. But just as quickly, Mike Larrabee’s pass over the middle was picked off by senior Darren Pagan at the 49 yardline.  The Bulldogs returned to punishing the Cardinals up the middle as the home team took over the line of scrimmage. A late hit penalty on the Cardinals moved the ball deeper into Ireton territory, then the Bulldogs threw the Alexandrians a “curveball” and Brookes pitched a perfect 30-yard pass to junior Andrew Jones, who slipped behind the Cardinals’ weary defenders.  Smith’s third PAT ended the scoring and Ireton offense scrambled but turned the ball over on downs as the clock ticked down on the 24-6 setback to Virginia’s third ranked independent football team.

Bishop Ireton will try to regroup and head to Richmond for a date with St Christophers. St Chris, 33-0 losers to St Stephens earlier in the year, drilled Ireton last year at homecoming.

Knights grab early lead, hold on for 2-0

Bishop O’Connell’s girls soccer team figured to be a preseason favorite to content for a WCAC championship. The Knights visit to Fannon Field did little to suggest they are not on course for the Halloween weekend title game with a 2-0 win over the Cardinals Thursday.  The Cardinals, just back from a hard-fought 3-2 loss the night before in Fairfax to PVI, hung gamely with the Knights, hustling and making O’Connell earn the win.

The 9 to 3 shots on goal margin for the Arlington school suggested they did control much of the contest, as did 5 corner kicks during the course of the game. Ireton with fewer shots and no corners rarely challenged the netminder, but did have their moments.  “We played flat, the second half Bishop Ireton was the aggressor, beat us to most balls,” said Virginia’s winnest high school girls’ soccer coach, Alberto Strache of Bishop O’Connell.

Morgan Reuther got O’Connell on the board at the 21st minute mark after senior Jackie Moriarty dribbled through a number of Cardinals then passed ahead to the Knight’s sophomore for the tally. In the 25th minute, the Knights’ sophomore Rianna Arellano pressed the ball toward the Ireton net closely guarded by senior Jackie Galdos. As they closed on the goal, Galdos poked the ball free but passed the surprised Joanna Faletti for a 2-0 advantage for the visitors.

“We made some adjustments at halftime and some mistakes in communications, but with some fresh legs next week, we’ll be better next Tuesday at O’Connell.” said Ireton’s Marianna Sullivan after the contest.

Matthew Lewis captures 1st Annual Cardinal 5K

There may be faster races or more runners participating in years to come, but there won’t be a nicer day than visited the First Annual Bishop Ireton 5k Race Sunday in Alexandria. While  tens of thousands ran in the Army 10-miler, 65 runners bolted out of the Water Park just after 9am under a clear sky and a crisp 63 degree start. Matthew Lewis, 28, won easily in a time of 17:50 while 14-year old Matie Nelochea was the first womam finisher in 23:21.  The crowd favorite, however, was the 73-year old Oblate priest, Father Al Smith, OSFS, who taught at Bishop Ireton from 1965 to 1979. Flanked by Raul Racaurte, class of 1968, and alumni affairs director, Terry Rainey, the three stepped along smartly through the course and finished strongly across the finish line in 42:47.

The course laid out by the Cardinals’ cross country mentor, Brad Byrnes, was a beautiful, peaceful route along the water as you entered Holmes Run Park and under the railroad bridge. Crossing back and forth over the water on foot bridges along the route while people strolled in the cool morning , the sunlight bathed warmly on the runners as they headed to the back side of Cameron Station. Greeting the runners as they entered the station, the aroma of the morning’s breakfast filled the air and the busy farmers’ market appeared to the left. Soon, down a lightly gravelled trail, the course bent back through the woods and quickly by a water stop.  With that, the runners were headed back past the shoppers casually purusing the market’s wares to the water park and the slightly hilly climb back to Eisenhower Avenue and to the finish line.  With finished runners making up the vast majority of the “crowd” cheering each competitor on, runners filed into the parking area and into the finish.

Race coordinator, Larry Clark, thanked the runners for their participation in the School’s first annual 5k race and encouraged them to make it an annual affair. Clark, an active triathlete, teamed up with the Club’s Jen Chastian, Gail Schwartz, and Booster president, Dan Babiec, to organize the event.  Cross country coach, Brad Byrnes eagerly joined the effort and secured the services of Pacers, an Alexandria running store and veteran race organizing company. With a minimal marketing effort, the registrations began to come in. Many responded to the notices in school emails, race brochures, and some from bulletin boards at local gyms. “I saw a flyer at the Lee District Park,” said age group winner, Cindy Lorine, “a couple of my friends at the morning boot camp workout signed up with me.”
