Alexandria Sportsman’s Club president Marc Leon announced Thursday that Bishop Ireton running back Doug Vines has been selected as the male athlete of the month in Alexandria by the organization. Vines will be the Club’s guest at their monthly meeting at the Potomac Boat Club, 1 King Street, Alexandria on Tuesday, October 20th. Meeting begins at 7pm and is open the public.
This month’s meeting is “Redskins Night” and a number of former Redskins are scheduled to appear. Coach Tony Verducci will make the introduction of Vines and Mr. Leon will present the Ireton senior with the Club’s award.
The Sportsman’s Club is one of the premier athletic clubs in the metropolitan area dedicated to supporting high school athletics, particularly Alexandria high schools, and presents end-of-the-year awards and scholarships to City athletes at a gala each May.
Vines, Ireton’s all purpose back has the unique situation of having scored in nearly every possible fashion in the first six games of the season. With a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in Saturday’s game at St Albans, he adds to the list that includes a punt return for a score against rugged Woodberry Forest, a school record 97-yard interception for a TD against Archbishop Carroll in the season opener, he caught a pass for a touchdown against St Stephens, and rushed for a touchdown against a number of teams, most recently Bullis in Ireton’s 28-0 homecoming win.
The Alexandria native has been a three year letterwinner coming into the current season and a starter for the last two seasons.
