Episcopal runs away with XC City titles

 With overcast skies, but temperatures ideal for cross country, Episcopal High School ran away with both Varsity titles at the 2009 Alexandrea City Cross Country Championships. The Maroons were lead by the top spot of Reid Nickle (16:58) over TC Williams’ Darren Foreman (17:08). EHS put in 5 runners in the top 9 overall, finishing with 25 points. TC Williams was second with 54 points, edging the Cardinals with 58. St Stephens, with 106, was 4th. 

The Cardinals saw Michael Anderson pace the team with a 4th place finish in a time of 17:34, while senior Billy Burns notched a 10th place at 18:12. Junior Ed Nguyen’s 18:40 was good for 13th place, while classmate Murphy Costigan’s 18:45 yielded a 15th finish and sophomore teammate Nick Mazek’s 18:49 placed him 16th. Arthur Stier at 19:00 grabbed a 18th place and sophomore Liam O’Connor grabbed 20th at 19:14.

On the girls side, Episcopal barely held off TC Williams with a 1 point margin of victory. The lady Maroons one-uped their boy’s team by placing 5 in the top 8 of the field. Elizabeth Spruill led EHS to the victory with her 2nd place overall finish (20:39). Shannon Smythe from TC Williams was the girls individual champion at 20:11. Bishop Ireton snared a third place team finish with 92 points to edge the Saints with 95 overall.

In the Junior Varsity races, TC Williams got their due with a victory. Lead by Nick Brown’s 1st place finish (18:20), the Titans had 5 runners in the top 11 spots to finish ahead of Bishop Ireton; 29 points to 38 points. Ireton’s Andrew Kicinski  was second in the boys JV race. Episcopal took third and St Stephens/St Agnes a 4th. The Cardinals results:

In the junior varsity races, TC Williams finally got a win after the close second place finishes in the varsity events.  Lead by Nick Brown’s 1st place (18:20), the Titans had 5 runners in the top 11 spots to best Bishop Ireton by nine points, 29 to38. The Cardinals Andrew Kicinski paced Ireton with a second place finish, while Kevin Corcoran and Daniel Burns had top ten finishes.  The girls race finally saw Bishop Ireton pull out a victory, scoring their top 10 runners in the first 17 spots of the race! TC Williams was also rewarded with the top finisher overall in sophomore Kathryn Hendley (22:52). Bishop Ireton then came in with the next two runners in 
Janet Tela (22:58) 7:24 & Hannah Lynn (23:07).
