MSD Edges Cardinals in Volleyball home opener, 3-2

Ashley Cabrera

Bishop Ireton roared out to an impressive 25-12 win in game 1 only to see the visiting Maryland School for the Deaf rally in games 2 and 3, pulling out the critical game five to upend the Cardinals in Alexandria Tuesday, 3 games to 2.

“We did many good things,” said Coach Kathy Gutmann. “Serving and passing were our strong points today, but it is the ‘little things’ that got us.  Between the earthquake and the hurricane, we lost two scrimmages that would have helped us with those ‘little things’.”

After taking game 1, MSD won the following games 25-18, 25-16 before the Cardinals regrouped and dominated game 4 25-13. It was not to be for Ireton, however, as the visitors jumped to an 11-4 lead and cruised to a win in the 5th game, 15-5 to win the match.

“Laura Hart played particularly well for us and Ashley Cabrera was strong serving the ball for us.” commented Gutmann.  The Cardinals (0-1, 0-0) open WCAC at St Mary’s Rykien Thursday afternoon.

Sell Out Crowd Expected for Cardinals football opener Friday

Ireton's award winning cheerleaders will spearhead the Cardinal and Gold supporters at the home opener Friday with Bishop O'Connell

Bishop Ireton athletic officials anticipate a sellout crowd for Friday’s home opener with rival Bishop O’Connell. Kickoff is set for 5pm on Fannon Field.  Athletic department officials urge fans to arrive early and be conscientious about parking in the neighborhood when on-campus parking is full.

“We ask our fans to help us be ‘good neighbors’ when we host events that require fans to park on the streets surrounding the school.” said Ireton AD, Bill Simmons. “Everyone can appreciate what is like to have a driveway blocked, trash left in your front yard, or a commotion at your home.  We want to show our neighbors we get that and appreciate their cooperation and support of our activities.”

Simmons said there will be concessions, souvenirs, and other pregame activities to help fans prepare for the annual battle of northern Virginia rivals. DJO is the most frequently played opponent in Ireton history and the Cardinals hope to get back on the winning track after the Knights ecked out a 20-13 win in Arlington last season.

Following the game, the alumni association will host a reception in the atrium of the auditorium while the School will host the annual “Back-to-School” pool party at the Annandale Swim and Tennis Club in Annandale. Admission is $5 for all attendees ages 6 and above. Booster club passes will be available at the gate.

Verducci “happy” with Cardinals’ first scrimmage

Cardinals open their preseason hosting a scrimmage with Riverdale Baptist Saturday. Ireton hosts Bishop O'Connell at 5pm Friday Sept 2 at Fannon Field to open the 2011 campaign.

When a team spends nearly a week of two-a-day practices playing against only each other, it starts to get old quickly.  The Cardinals first action against an opponent came Saturday morning as the varsity and junior varsity saw contact with someone other than a teammate.

“We were ready to hit someone besides each other,” commented Ireton’s fifth year coach, Tony Verducci following the Saturday encounter with Riverdale Baptist. “Riverdale Baptist is an athletic team, a strong, talented squad that was a good first test for us.  I liked our energy and the way we played at this point in the preseason.”

The squads played a series of 10 consecutive offensive plays then reversed the possession and played another 10 plays. The special teams had their work as well, with controlled tackling in order to refine the kicking and coverage while minimizing the possibility of injury on a special teams play. After two sets each, the teams played a controlled one quarter of football.

The Cardinals established early that fans will need to “pay attention” because they rarely huddled in their first competitive work and had the Crusaders on their heels pressing the next play as the blue and gold clan visitors were looking just to get lined up.  Junior PJ Zingler opened at quarterback and moved the ball to a number of receivers while Andrew Bladen took a number of snaps as a running back for the Cards.

Defensively, the Cardinals played well but the larger Crusaders at one point moved the ball consistently on the ground before the redbirds used a fumble and penalty to force Riverdale Baptist to kick a long field goal.

Crusaders’ skipper Bob Shields saw progress for his team as well. “We have been practicing longer, but you could see the value of an RMA for Ireton. We like to come here, you always know you will see a well-coached team that is fundementally sound and plays hard. I thought we played well against what looks to be a very good Ireton football team.”

“We have some players banged up and we expect them back on Monday.” commented Verducci. “It was a good start today, and good to be home after a great week at Randolph Macon.”

Bishop Ireton will travel to Pallotti for their final scrimmage, a 6:30pm affair on Friday, August 26th. They open the regular season on Friday, September 2d when the Knights of Bishop O’Connell visit Fannon Field. The JV will open their season the day before with a 4pm kickoff at Fannon Field with the DJO youngersters.  Admission to the varsity contest is $5, JV is free.

Verducci Welcomes 80+ as Football Camp Opens

Senior Malcolm Westbrook tied the season record for receptions in 2010 and looks to do big things for the Cardinals in 2011.

Coach Tony Verducci enters his fifth season at the helm of Cardinal football excited about the prospects for the year ahead.  Almost 20 seniors reported to camp on August 9th and led what should be a talented and deep Ireton football team to their annual 2-a-day camp at Randolph Macon Academy in Front Royal, Virginia August 14-19.

The Cardinals expect to be serious contenders for the VISAA division I playoffs, which selects the top four teams based upon weekly state-wide polls.  Verducci points to depth on both the offensive and defensive lines as well as a solid core of talented offensive players that will make opponents defend the entire field.

Junior PJ Zingler returns from his record setting sophomore campaign, one which saw him complete nearly  70% of his passes for 15 touchdowns and over 2000 yards. Senior Malcolm Westbrook, who snared a season record high 47 passes returns as one target for the junior signal caller, while Matt McShea will return as the squad’s tight end. Moses Webb returns for his senior season as the club’s leader in scoring and all purpose yards in the 2010 campaign.  At 6’5″ 265 pounds, center and long snapper  Eddie D’Antuono leads a veteran offensive line with seven players who started one or more games for the Cardinals in their 4-6 season last fall, with four of the losses coming by less than a touchdown.

On the defensive side of the ball, Richard Walker will lead an experienced defensive team that made great strides as the fall closed for the Cards in 2010.  Seven defensive linemen, led by senior Andrew Lutterloh, earned letters and that suggests Walker and outside linebacker Ned Curry  will get plenty of work with opponent’s ball carriers.  Moses Webb shows his football versatility on the defense with a shutdown corner mentality that evidences his solid technique and football instincts.

Bishop Ireton hosts the rival Knights of Bishop O’Connell on a Labor Day Friday weekend matinee, kickoff at 5pm on Fannon Field.  The redbirds tune up with an August 20th scrimmage with Riverdale Baptist at Ireton before heading to Maryland to wrap up their preseason with Pallotti.

Following the DJO weekend opener, Ireton will return to Bullis on Sept 10th for a Saturday contest. A date with St Stephens on Fannon Field marks their second home game September 17th and John Paul the Great’s Wolves make their first varsity call on the Cardinals Oct 1st. Both those contests are 2pm kickoffs. Ireton will end their regular season home schedule with diocesan rival, Paul VI Catholic for homecoming on Saturday, October 22, this is a 1pm kickoff.

Fannon Field in “great shape” after 8 years of heavy use

Sabrina, of Thomas Testing from Scotts, Michigan, examined the conditions on Fannon Field recently and pronounced the surface in "great condition".

Summer is a busy time for school officials as they recover from one academic year and simultaneously prepare for the next one.  For the athletic department and specifically assistant athletic director Kwinten Brown, that means Fannon Field, Sagar track, Magnussen wrestling room, Godley Gym as well as the fitness center and weight room.

“Often coaches see my role as only reserving time at our various facilities, but I also need to make sure the facilities are working correctly, they are clean, and they are safe.  This evaluation of the AstroTurf is part of doing that,” said the second year athletic facilities and transportation director.  Brown oversaw the turf evaluation as well as power washing of the field seating area and track.

The “GMax” testing is a standard measure of the safety of the field.  The evaluation gauges the shock absorbing properties of the playing surface and compares it to the artificial turf industry standards.  Those standards, set by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), give field owners a metric to judge their field’s safety.

The harder the surface the more of the impact of players landing on the field will be absorbed by the player and not the field. Not surprisingly, that impact can lead to increased injury, including concussion. The higher the GMax rating, the harder the surface and likelihood of increased injury.

ASTM suggests that scores over 200 are considered dangerous while reading in the 120 – 150 are the preferred range of safe readings.  Preliminary results indicated the field remains in exceptional condition with readings ranging from 116 to 124 on the field. The highest initial reading was a 132.  The Thomas Testing representative assured Ireton officials that Fannon Field is one of the best she has seen.

The use of a pad beneath the turf carpet is a great safety feature experts now suggest.  And, the AstroPlay 2000 surface remains one of the highest quality products in use worldwide.

“Ed Kearney, Fr. Matt Hillyard, and former athletic director Mark Heiser really did their homework back in 2003 and made a great purchase. ” said Bishop Ireton’s AD, Bill Simmons. “We have the oldest artificially turfed field in the WCAC and it would appear it remains one of the best as well as safest around. There may be fields that are used as much as ours, but few could see more use.”

With 8 years of wear behind it, Fannon Field is projected to see between 7 and 12 years of additional service before the manufacturer suggests it will have reached the end of its useful life.  “We will continue to do these types of projects to maintain our field and ensure its safety for our athletes.  A contracted grooming to vacuum out the infill, clean away debris packed into the fibers, and rejuvenating the fibers is our next scheduled project. That will ensure our field continues to serve us as well as it has.” added

Simmons.

Erin Simons to lead return of field hockey to Bishop Ireton

Coach Erin Simons will lead the Cardinals back into field hockey. Simons, a 2004 Longwood University alum, was a four-year forward in college.

Bishop Ireton athletic director, Bill Simmons, announced the School has signed Erin Sixsmith Simons as the Cardinals’ new head coach for field hockey.  The team will play an abbreviated 2011 schedule before joining the WCAC for a full varsity schedule in 2012 in conjunction with a move to the new Witter Field complex near the Cambridge Road campus.  Simons will bring her former coach, who also is her mother, Betty Sixsmith to her staff for the inaugural season.

“I am thrilled to be back in coaching and with Bishop Ireton” said the 2004 Longwood graduate who played her high school hockey not far away at West Potomac High School.  “Academics and athletics work together, hand-in-hand, to develop good time management skills and Ireton has a strong reputation for doing just that for its graduates.”

Simons played forward for the majority of her career in high school and college, seeing some time on defense in her final campaign in Farmville.

“I want to develop an upbeat, smart, and a disciplined style of play for our teams.” explained the Cardinals’ newest head coach.  “I am excited about building a new program, new traditions, and establishing a great hockey culture at BI, and I hope the girls are thinking that way too!  We are going to work hard, the girls need to come ready to practice everyday.  Field hockey is a finesse game and we are going  to outwork people this fall. ”

The search for a coaching staff was a difficult one according to Cardinals’ AD, Bill Simmons. “Field hockey is a growing sport in the area and qualified coaches are in high demand. As July turned into August, Mr Brown and I were almost literally looking everywhere to find a good candidate, including when we were out socially.  The suggestion to contact Coach Simons and Coach Sixsmith came just last week and we are fortunate that they were ready to come back to coaching at a time when field hockey and Bishop Ireton really need them back.  I don’t think we could have found better coaches honestly, and their references were  glowing!”

An interest meeting for all girls who will tryout is scheduled for Friday, August 12th at 6pm in room G221.  Tryouts will begin Monday, August 15th, with the players gathering at Bishop Ireton’s Godley Gym before being bussed their practice site.  The City and School continue their discussions about a suitable practice site and the  schedule remains to be finalized.

Young Cardinals Soar on National Girls Lax Stage in Orlando

Coach Rick Sofield took five rising Cardinal freshmen with the Stars Gold club team from northern Virginia to the US Lacrosse Girls’ U-15 national championship game in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, in July.  The team went undefeated through the tournament before falling to the defending champion Yellow Jackets of Long Island, NY for the second year in a row.

Freshmen Kelly Mathews, Kaitlin Luzik, Natalie Irwin, and Charlotte Sofield joined new sophomore goalie Oliva Cole on the squad, with Cole and Sofield being named to the tournament’s all-tourney team.

After going 3-0 in the preliminary rounds of the tournament, the second seeded Stars Gold squared off with the top-seeded Long Island squad.  The Jackets again prevailed 10-3 after the Stars grabbed an early 2-1 lead.  “It was a lot harder this year,” said Jackets’ coach, Carol Rainson-Rose, whose girls topped the Stars 12-5 in 2010.

“Oliva played out-of-her-mind well in the semifinals and finals,” commented Sofield, “we just had too many turnovers and didn’t win enough draws. Kelly, Kaitlin, and Natalie were major contributors to the success we enjoyed through the tournament.”

The freshmen and sophomore goalkeeper form a strong future for the Cardinal lacrosse program, one that has finished in the top three of the WCAC for five consecutive years.  See an interview with the Cardinals’ skipper at: http://youtu.be/elZhJqD4YP8
