McNamara holds off Cardinal boys, 69-64

Senior Patrick Hanafin led the Cardinals with 22 in the setback to McNamara

by Steve Hallex 2/5/2011 (DCSportsFan)

Bishop Ireton’s home court crowd had entirely too many vociferous fans of the visiting team, and that visiting team happened to be one of the very best teams in the area. The night, it seemed, could have been quite unpleasant for the Cardinals of Bishop Ireton when they hosted McNamara.

The Cardinals, however, were determined to not let that happen. Bishop Ireton’s squad that took the floor played enthusiastic, not intimidated. They did everything a team must do to win — they rebounded, they shot well, they defended well, they passed well, they fought hard for the ball, and stayed in the game until the very end. But, as the McNamara fans chanted, it was a case of “too much juice” on the other side as the Mustangs defeated Ireton, 69-64.

The Mustangs’ biggest weapon on the night was senior guard Marcus Thornton, who scored 26 points against a strong Ireton defense. Defensively, the Mustangs’ fluid zone defense was particularly difficult to overcome, and forced Ireton to be more cautious in its shooting than it wanted to be.

It also denied the Cardinals inside lanes much of the time and forced the Cardinals to rely on outside shooting much of the time. McNamara’s offensive game was equally frustrating. Coach Marty Keithline has built a system based on passing the ball until a virtually undefended shot presents itself. No matter how lethal a scorer any player became, no double-teaming was possible, as that player could quickly kick it out to a teammate at almost any angle, and much too often, that teammate would be alone on the floor with an easy shot.

The game stayed close because of the outstanding play from Ireton’s three guards: juniors Malcolm Westbrook and Marcus Hayes and senior Antonio Rouse. Hayes’ seven points in the first half were crucial to Ireton only trailing by four at the half. However, he ran into foul trouble early in the second. After holding a brief lead in the first quarter, Westbrook would knot it the only other time in the game with a basket early in the second quarter.

Later, he would hit a jumper at the very end of the third to bring it within five after trailing by ten only a couple minutes earlier. Rouse scored seven in the first half and six in the second for thirteen points. Forward Patrick Hanafin led all Cardinals scorers with 22, mostly in the second half. At one point in the second half, the senior sank a shot to pull it within a point, then had the ball in his hands a few seconds later. Hanafin had a good look for the go-ahead basket, but missed. It was Ireton’s best chance to score the upset. Though the Cardinals whittled down several big McNamara leads, the Mustangs excellent transition game seemed to reemerge at just the moment it seemed the momentum had shifted.

McNamara improves to 19-4 with a 10-3 conference record. Ireton is now 8-15 and 0-12 in the WCAC, still seeking their first conference win.

Pair of Wins Propels Hockey to Second Seed in NVHSL playoffs

Reid Yagar and the Cardinals have quietly moved up the standing all season and look forward to a second seed in the NVSHL playoffs beginning Feb 18th.

A pair of exciting 7-3 Ireton victories last week, coupled with a Westfields loss to Paul VI on Friday night, has guaranteed the Ireton Varsity Ice Hockey team a spot in the upcoming NVSHL playoffs.  Playing Varsity for the first time since the 2005-2006 season, the Cardinals will finish 2nd in the 6-team Smythe division, behind only Briar Woods.  The team currently sports a 5-3-1 league mark with one game remaining.  The turn of events was quite an accomplishment for a team who started the season 0-2 and was picked by many to finish well out of the playoff picture.

The week started on Monday with an afternoon contest at the Mt. Vernon Rec Center against a combined Loudoun County/Fredericksburg Christian squad.  The teamwork that has been prevalent the last couple of weeks was again present for this game, as 5 of the 7 goals scored by the potent Cardinal offense featured 2 assists.  The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead on goals by Reid Yager and Nick Tangora.

Second period goals by Dillon Roach and Dave Souliotis offset a pair of goals by the LC/FC squad to stake the Cardinals to a 4-2 lead heading into the third.  Early in the final stanza goals by a pair of Freshmen, Stephen Gerke and Duke Roach, just over a minute apart blew the game open.  A final tally by Nick Tangora completed the scoring for the Cardinals.  Duke Roach led all scorers with 4 points (1 G, 3 A), and Nick Tangora (2 G, 1 A), Stephen Gerke (1 G, 2A) and Dillon Roach (1G, 2 A) had 3 points each.  Yager and Souliotis rounded out the scoring with 1 goal apiece and Tom Cyrnak, James Smith and William Chastain each picked up single assists.  Robert Chastain picked up the win in net.

Friday night brought a key matchup against division rival Mountain View at Skatequest Reston.  The Wildcats jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead but that would be their only lead of the game.  They would not score again until late in the third period and for Mountain View it would be too little and much too late.  In the interim, the powerful Cardinal offense pumped in 7 goals, 6 of them by Senior Reid Yager.  Yager, part of the top penaltykilling forward tandem, scored 4 of his 6 goals short-handed and kept the Wildcat power play unit on their heels all night.

Tom Cyrnak picked up the other tally at even strength in the middle period.  Dan Tangora and Dave Souliotis each chipped in with 2 assists on the night, while Cyrnak, Ian Rush and Allen Boelke were credited with single assists.  Robert Chastain stopped 19 of 22 Wildcat shots for the victory.

The Cardinal Hockey team wraps up the regular season this week with a pair of games.  Monday night brings the Herndon Hornets to the friendly confines of the Mt. Vernon Rec Center for a 5:45 pm tilt, closing out the league schedule.  Friday night the team finishes up their non-league slate by welcoming Bishop O’Connell to Mt. Vernon.  The game will serve as Senior Night for the Ireton squad, with the festivities starting at 7pm, followed by the game.  The NVSHL playoffs will begin on Friday night, February 18th.  The League will announce the playoff schedule  next week.

Lions Hold on to top Cardinals, 45-42

Junior Malcolm Westbrook shoots for the Cardinals in a 45-42 setback to Archbishop Carroll Thursday.

The difference between winning and losing is often razor thin, Thursday night 32 minutes of basketball came down to the final six seconds.   With the Cardinals trailing by three  on alumni night, they got a chance as time expired but the failed attempt sent Ireton home disappointed, 45-42 to Archbishop Carroll in WCAC men’s basketball.

Both teams struggled to find any offensive flow in the opening quarter of the contest, the squads posting a 6-5 score in favor of the Lions at the end of one.  The athletic Washington visitors were athletic and aggressive on the boards, garnering 18 offensive rebounds in the course of the game,  and cobbled together a 7-0 run on put backs and layups.  Ireton responded however, and with a pair  of threes, from seniors Patrick Hanafin and Matt Barnwell, the Cardinals went to intermission with a 17-16 lead.

The offense picked up in the third quarter and Carroll regained a 31-30 advantage after three quarters.  Antonio Rouse made a pair of free throws to push Ireton to a 35-34 lead with 6:40 to play, and the teams struggled evenly as Carroll junior Ryan Williams tied the game at 38 with 4:10 left. Williams added a three after junior Marcus Hayes had put Ireton back on top, pulling the Lions to a 41-40 lead.  Pair of Carroll free throws increased the bulge to 43-40 with 1:02 remaining.  A critical Cardinal turnover led to a dunk by junior Justin Alston and the redbirds were down 45-40 with  29 ticks remaining to play.

Rouse drained a pair of free throws to pull the hosts to 45-42 and the Lions missed a pair of free throws to give Ireton life with under ten seconds.  The Cardinals hustled down the floor and got a three off, snared the rebound and quickly fired it back outside teh arc, but the second shot at the buzzer bounced off the rim as the horn sounded.   The Cardinals fall to 8-14 on the season, 0-11 in the WCAC.  Second place Bishop McNamara makes their annual visit to Father Godley Gym Friday night, the tripleheader starts with freshmen at 4pm and the varsity tipoff is scheduled for 7:30pm.

Mid-Atlantic Erg Sprints Results are In!

On Saturday January 29, 2011 The Bishop Ireton Crew competed in the Mid Atlantic Erg Sprints – the official Satellite Regatta of the Sprints World Indoor Rowing Championships held at TC Williams High School in Alexandria, VA.   Saturday’s event saw  thirty Bishop Ireton athletes among the 1,367 finishers who rowed 1,738 miles in 100 different events.  It was an amazing sporting event our Cardinals participated in for both men’s and women’s varsity and novice teams.

This is the first time in Ireton history that we placed two in the top 10 in the overall standing results.  In event #48, 2000 meter (17 and under) race: Olivia Babeic (Class of 2011) came in fourth overall with a time of 7:36.2 and Brianna Burke (Class of 2013) came in ninth with a time of 7:49.7. In addition to the two girls breaking the 8 minute barrier over 2000 meters, the boys side had, for the first time in the history of the program, three boys – Justin Roczniak (Class of 2011), Jacob Ramey (Class of 2012), and Josh Martini (Class of 2013) – break 7 minutes at this early season race.  In addition to the finest rowing programs represented, including successful East coast college programs, in this prestigious event, high schools made up about seventy percent of the field.

Head Coach Eric Gehrke was quoted as saying, “I am proud of how some of our top end athletes responded to this race. It is still very early to prepare for competition but some of our team leaders showed up ready to perform and that is what we need to use to build a culture of succeeding in this program.”

Swimmers post strong finishes at Catholic Nationals

Senior Brian McGinty swims breaststroke for the Cardinals

The weekend was an extraordinary one for Cardinal swimming.   All of the swimmers who participated in the National Catholic Championship in Philadelphia swam strong times and qualified for the  finals.   This accomplishment is especially noteworthy because a key teammate, Kevin Grant, was struck with the flu and could not swim. His teammates rallied with great spirit to compensate for this loss.   Special recognition should be given to Robert Mejia and Andrew Crandall for helping to fill Kevin’s shoes…er..fins.
The preliminary events were held at Villanova University on Saturday and the finals were swum at LaSalle University on Sunday.  Eight BI girls and five boys swam for the BI national team and were led by Coach John Gullickson.  Many personal best swims were recorded including: Eileen Louison’s 50 free and  100 free,  Emi Quinn’s  100 free, Maddie Zeigler’s 100 fly, Kelly Palmer’s 200 free and 500 free, Saskia Kroesen ‘s 50  free and  100 fly, Laura Becht’s 100 free, Brian McGinty’s 200 IM and 100 ******, Ryan Dougherty’s 50 and 100 free and Michael Ryan Clark’s  100 free and 100 back.
All of the BI relays that swam in prelims made it back to finals.  Allison Wulff, Michael Ryan Clark, Maddie Zeigler, Saskia Kroesen, Kelly Palmer and Liz Collins also made finals in individual swims.  Everyone swam and placed well in finals.  Top ten finishes included:  Liz Collins (2nd in 100 ****** and 7th in 200 IM), Saskia Kroesen (3rd in100 fly and 5th in 50 free) Kelly Palmer (9th in 500 free), the women’s 200 medley relay (6th  with the team of Zeigler, Collins, Kroesen and Wulff), the women’s 200 free relay (9th with the team of Becht, Louison, Wulff and Quinn), the women’s 400 free relay (5th with the team of Kroesen, Palmer, Zeigler, and Collins), the boys 200 medley relay (10th with the team of Clark, McGinty, Dougherty and Mejia), and the men’s 200 free relay (9th with the team of Clark, Dougherty, McGinty and Crandall).
The Cardinals had a great meet, according to head coach John Gullickson,  with the boys finishing 12th overall and the girls 7th.  The Bishop Ireton contingent noted the warm hospitality at Villanova and LaSalle Universities, which they reported were sincerely appreciated.

Cardinals Go 4-1 in Dual Meet Wrestling to Improve to 17-3

Senior Elliott Mondragon improved to 27-0, pictured here at Georgetown Prep

Despite Mother Natures persistent efforts to keep the Ireton grapplers off the mat, the Cardinals traveled to Bethesda on Friday to take on the Landon Bears, the St. Anselm’s Panthers, and the Washington Post’s tenth-ranked powerhouse Georgetown Prep Hoyas.

The Cards overpowered the Panthers with final team score of 78-6.   Against Landon, the Cards once again dominated the Bears taking them down with a final team score of 63-12. The Hoyas from Prep are the third ranked opponent the Cardinals have wrestled this year and they earned that ranking as the Cards fell for only the third time this year with a final score of 52-21.

The Cardinal matmen quickly rebounded on Saturday at Godly Gym against the Bulldogs from Bullis as a said “farewell” to our four seniors.  As their tribute our graduating seniors, the Cardinals beat Bullis with a final team score of 42-27. Our last match of the week was against the Crusaders from Bishop Sullivan, who the Ireton Cardinals soundly defeated with a final score of 62-12.

Despite the foul weather, fan turnout for the matches in Bethesda was terrific and fan support for the Cardinal grapplers was rewarded with a  first win of the night against a short-handed St. Anselms.  Against the Panthers, Ireton won all but one individual match. Four were won by pins from senior Arslan Ryspekov at 119lbs in 1:41, sophomore Tommy Dean at 145lbs in 1:00, junior Andrew Bladen at 171lbs in :48, and junior Andrew Lutterloh at 215 lbs in :19, which was also the fastest pin of the match and Andrew’s fastest career pin.  Additional nine wins were by forfeits from Elliot Mondragon, Darcy Gomez, Jeff Severini, Nick Womach, Andrew Baehre, Ricki Baier, Ben Nagao, Tommy Fessahaye, and Jimmy Keegan.

The 63-12 victory against the Landon Bears was achieved with a total of eleven individual wins, six of which were by pin from junior Darcy Gomez in 1:53, senior Arslan Ryspekov in 1:21, Andrew Baehre in a career best :10, junior Gibson Hawk in 4:32, junior Andrew Bladen in 1:22, and junior Andrew Lutterloh in 4:11. Additional wins were achieved by Jeff Severini at 125 lbs with a 7-2 decision, and four wins by forfeit from Elliot Mondragon, Ricki Baier, Michael Rodriguez, and Ben Nagao.

The final match of the evening against the Georgetown Prep Hoyas proved to be the greatest challenge of the week as the Cards fell for the third time this year. In our match against the undefeated and reigning IAC champions, the Cards put up a good battle winning four individual matches, two of which were by pin from senior Elliot Mondragon at 103 lbs in 1:50, and junior Andrew Lutterloh at 215, in :25, which was also the fastest pin of the match.  Additional wins were achieved by junior Andrew Bladen at 171 lbs with a 5-2 decision, and junior Ben Nagao at 152 lbs with a win by forfeit.

The Ireton fans were enthusiastically supportive for the “Senior Day” matches at Godley Gym on Saturday, as the team won both ends of the triangular meet as a send off to departing seniors Elliot Mondragon, Arslan Ryspekov, Ricki Baier and James Oliva. In our opening match of the day against the Bullis Bulldogs, the Ireton Cardinals won eight of their individual matches, four of which were by pin from senior Elliot Mondragon at 103 lbs in 1:50, junior Darcy Gomez at 112 lbs in 1:08, sophomore Nick Womach at 130 lbs in 1:10, and junior Andrew Lutterloh in 5:28. Achieving the fastest pin against the Bulldogs was Darcy Gomez, who stuck his opponent in 1:08. Additional wins were achieved by junior Gibson Hawk at 160 lbs with a 12-7 decision, junior Andrew Bladen wrestling up to 189 lbs with a 7-6 decision, and two wins by forfeit from Jeff Severini and Ricki Baier.

The support for the Cardinals was progressively more supportive in the Cardinal’s final match of the week against Bishop Sullivan. Having just beaten Bullis and hoping for some pay back against the Cardinals for our recent victory at the Commonwealth Catholic Classic Tournament, the Crusaders put up a good fight, but ultimately they fell to the hosts with a score of 62-12.

Against the Crusaders, the Cardinals won twelve of our fourteen individual bouts, with pins from senior Elliot Mondragon at 103 lbs in 1:33, senior Arslan Ryspekov at 119 in 1:00, sophomore Jeff Severini at 125 lbs in :36, junior Andrew Bladen at 171 lbs in 1:25, and senior James Oliva at 189 lbs in 5:49. Fastest pin of the match was achieved by Jeff Severini, who pinned his opponent in :36, which is his fastest pin this season, but two seconds slower than his career fastest pin.

While many of the individual bouts kept us at the edge of our seats, none could match the final seconds of senior James Oliva’s match as he came from an 8-3 deficit  to pin his Crusader opponent in the final period .

Bishop Ireton will conclude the dual meet portion of the regular season against the Covenant Eagles and John Paul the Great Wolves on Tuesday (February 2, 2011) at the Covenant School (175 Hickory St., Charlottesville, VA 22902) and wrestling is scheduled to begin at 5:00PM. After Tuesday’s matches, the Ireton Wrestlers begin their “post regular season” tournaments.

The first of the postseason tournaments will be the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) Championship Tournament, which will be hosted this year by Our Lady of Good Counsel (17301 Old Vic Blvd, Olney, MD 20832). The WCAC tournament will be held next Saturday, February 5, 2011 and wrestling will begin at about 9:00AM. The WCAC Tournament will be followed by the St. Albans Invitational Tournment on February 11-12, then the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) State Wrestling Tournament on February 18-19, 2011. This year the VISAA State Tournament will be held at the VCU Siegal Center in Richmond, VA. The final wrestling event of the season will be the National Prep tournament in Lehigh, PA on February 25-26, 2011.

Top Ranked Briar Woods Escapes Cardinals with 3-3 tie

Undefeated Briar Woods scored late to tie the surging Cardinals Friday 3-3

The Bishop Ireton varsity Hockey team traveled to the Ashburn Ice House last Friday night for an important matchup with the division-leading Briar Woods Falcons.  Despite missing 2 key starters, the Cardinals gave the powerful Falcon squad all they could handle.  In a back and forth contest that kept all in attendance on the edge of their seats, a goal by Briar Woods with just over a minute left in the contest tied it at 3 and that’s the way it ended despite a furious offensive push by the Ireton group in the waning seconds.

The Cardinals opened the scoring just over 10 minutes into the first period on a beautiful 3-way passing play, bringing the Ireton faithful to their feet in the process.   Dillon Roach picked up his 4th goal of the season, the recipient of pinpoint passes from Reid Yager and Stephen Gerke.  With the crowd still on their feet just over a minute later, Duke Roach found himself in the right place at the right time, poking in a rebound of a Yager shot and netting his 2nd.  The Falcons, undefeated until a loss last weekend, came storming back in the second period.  They knotted the score at 2 before the Ireton defense, led by the tandems of Dan Tangora/William Chastain and Allen Boelke/Ian Rush, made sure that it went no further.  The Cardinals had several good scoring chances late in the period thwarted by the Briar Woods goalie.

The third period saw more of the same, with both teams trading quality scoring chances.  With just under 2 minutes to go in the game and the Cardinals on a power play, leading scorer Reid Yager snapped in a shot to put Ireton up 3-2, and give Ireton hopes for a major upset.  Briar Woods had other ideas however, pulling their goalie after gaining control on the ensuing face-off, and poking in a loose puck on a wild goalmouth scramble with 67 seconds left in the game.  The Cardinal offense pressed hard to retake the lead in the last minute but the Briar Woods defense held firm.

Robert Chastain was stellar in net on this night, turning back 26 of 29 Falcon shots.  Reid Yager paced the offense with 3 points, as the Cardinals outshot Briar Woods, 39-29.  The tie allowed Ireton, 3-3-1 in league play, to keep pace in the tightly-contested Smythe division of the NVSHL.  The Cardinals’ playoff push continues Monday, Jan 31st  with a 5:45 pm tilt against the Loudoun County/Fredericksburg Christian team at Mt. Vernon Rec. Center.

Macey Lauded by Alexandria Sportsman’s Club

Ireton Coach Katie Sloper (left) with Sportsman's Club Athlete of the Month, junior Christine Macey

The Alexandria Sportsman’s Club honored Bishop Ireton junior tennis player Christine Macey recently as the Club’s female Athlete-of-the-Month.  The #3 singles player for the Cardinals last fall, Macey was 14-1 in varsity dual meets, made it to the finals of the State tourney, and was named the team’s MVP in the fall.

One highlight of the season was the Cardinals dual meet win over WCAC powerhouse, St Johns in Washington DC.  The squad’s 5-4 win stopped a  84-match WCAC winning streak for the Cadets.  Her tiebreaker win was a crucial part of the exciting win.

The junior is also active in the School’s award-winning Model UN for the past two years.  Macey is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Christopher Macey of Alexandria, Virginia.

Roadrunners Dash past Ireton 56-37

Senior Laura Hart and the Cardinals head to Archbishop Carroll Friday in search of a WCAC win.

Defending WCAC champions, Elizabeth Seton, raced away to an 11-2 in the first quarter enroute to a 56-37 win in Alexandria Tuesday night.

Once again,  Mara Celis-Copeletti led the Cardinals with 18 points. The scrappy sophomore sparked the Ireton offense with lashing drives to the basket and steady shooting from the the free throw line. She finished with a game high 18 points to lead all scorers.  Julia O’Brien added 7 and Caroline Boddie had a season-high 5 points off the bench.

Elizabeth Seton meanwhile used its entire bench with ten different players scoring for the Bladensburg, Maryland school. Hubbard led the ‘runners with 11 points and Albanese added 9.

Once again, field goals were a scarce commodity for Ireton who managed only nine for the night in contrast with Seton who scored 20 field goals, including 4 three-pointers.  The Cards once again dominated their opponent in free throw opportunities, converting on 19 of 28 chances. Seton, in contrast, made but 12 of 23 free throws.

The Cardinals (4-12, 0-10) travel to Archbishop Carroll Friday for the second of two matchups this year.  The Lions dumped Ireton in Alexandria 46-26 before the Christmas break.
