NCS Rallies Late to Spoil Home Opener in Soccer, 4-2

Lillie Weber, center, celebrates the Cardinals' first goal of the season.

For 50 minutes, number 6  Bishop Ireton looked in control of Wednesday’s soccer home opener against the 9th ranked National Cathedral School.  The final 30 minutes seemed to spin out of control for the home team and senior Marta Sniezek carried the visiting Eagles to a come-from-behind 4-2 win at Witter Field.

The home team grabbed an early 1-0 advantage with Lillie Webber’s first goal of the year in the game’s ninth minute.  Sniezek tied the game 9 minutes later during a momentary defensive lapse on one of the few times NCS ventured deep into the Ireton side of the field in the game’s opening half.

The Cardinals regained control of the game and dominated ball possession and went to intermission with a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal.  That control would soon slip from the home team’s grasp and they couldn’t regain it.

Ireton keeper, Amy Krotine was tested twice early in the game’s second half but was equal to the challenge on both shots. Freshman Grace Sklopan scored her first high school goal 57 minutes into the contest, giving the Cardinals the lead once again at 2-1.

Five minutes later, the Eagles got the equalizer when Emily Guinee took an Emma Boyd pass and  blasted a shot from inside the box.  Sniezek then seemingly took over the game with her second and third goals of the game to seal the Cardinals fate in the 66th and 71 minutes of the game.

“We were playing our first game situation, so we tried different combinations of players and worked on some different things.” said the Cardinals’ skipper, Gino Leon.  “We are disappointed, we had a number of chances to score, but we learned some things, we will figure it and move forward.”

The Cardinals (0-1) now head to Owings Mills, Maryland, to face Bethesda-Chevy Chase in a Friday match up of Mid Atlantic soccer programs. Saturday morning they will conclude the two-day visit to McDonogh School with a contest with Liberty High School.  Friday action begins at 6pm.

Convincing win opens gridiron season, 46-12

Linebacker Andrew LaTrash (15) and defensive end Andre Robinson (77) stop Park View for a short gain in Ireton's 46-12 win Friday.

It was a beautiful night to do just about anything Friday in Sterling, Virginia. With newcomer Joe Dickenson at quarterback, senior wide receiver Drew Smith spent the evening catching touchdown passes as Bishop Ireton raced past Park View 46-12 in a non conference season opener for both squads.  Or more precisely, Smith spent the first half catching touchdowns as the pair linked up three times sending the Cardinals out to a 32-6 advantage.

Senior quarterback Joe Dickenson tossed four touchdown passes and more than 300 yards in his first varsity start, three scores and 132 yards to Smith.  “I played behind a division one quarterback in El Paso so I didn’t play a lot in games.” commented the son of a career Army officer.  “I was a little nervous early in the game, but once I completed that first pass, I felt fine.”

Senior Josh Ammon blocked an extra point attempt and a punt for the stingy defensive squad that bottled up the Park View offense for most the evening  while the coaching staff lauded the kicking game’s substantial contribution, both the punting of LaTrash and David Cooper’s field goal and five extra points.

Bolstered by that smothering defense and precision kicking for much of the evening, aspects that consistently gave Bishop Ireton good field position, the offense pounded the ball on the ground behind a group of backs, from Andrew Latrash and Bernie Hayes inside to Perris Jones and Aaron Speight on the outside.  When the Patriots tried to slow the rushers, Dickenson took to the air and had more success.

“We didn’t expect the game to be that lopsided actually.” said Dickenson. “We were confident, we were a tight knit group coming into the game, things really went well for us.”

It was a marathon first period with penalties and mistakes slowing the game to a crawl at times. But the Cardinals kept after it, recovering a fumble on the game’s third play on the Park View 34.  Dickenson threw his first completion to Smith for 31 yards before Ireton eventually settled for a 19-yard field goal by another Army transfer, David Cooper, at 10:09 remaining in the opening quarter.

A bad snap caused the Patriots’ punter to drop to a knee and field the ball, but in high school, that makes the ball down at the point of the knee, giving the Cardinals’ another gift that would result in Smith’s first of three touchdown passes, a 19-yard strike at 7:59.

Park View had their best offensive series of the first half when they connected on a 50-yard pass play and followed with a 32-yard touchdown pass over the middle to Ramirez to cut the margin to 10-6.  Senior Josh Ammon burst through the line to block the PAT and maintain the four point margin.

Andrew Latrash had a strong game punting the football and his boot downed at the Park View 2-yard line set up the next scoring opportunity, this time for the defense.  The Cardinals entire left side collapsed the Patriots and an inside counter was stuffed two yards behind the goal line for a safety, building the advantage to 12-6.

Alex Duke returned the free kick from the Patriots more than 40 yards into home territory and Dickenson and company were back to work at the Park View 33 yard line. Though the Cardinals stalled on this drive, LaTrash again pinned the Pats inside their own 10.

The teams would trade punts as the game moved into the second quarter with Ireton again playing the game deep in Park View territory.   After a pair of Hayes scampers bringing the Cardinals to the 12 yard line, Dickenson found Smith in single coverage and the speedy senior made one move and bolted to the end for his second touchdown at 6:26 for a 19-6 lead.

The lead grew to 25-6 when Alex Duke rushed 7 yards to paydirt, the two-point attempt failing for Ireton.  The clock was racing away from the Cardinals in the first half, but the defense gave the offense one more opportunity and Drew Smith caught his third touchdown with 1:04 remaining in the opening half to widen the advantage to 32-6 at intermission.

Park View would get on the board in the third quarter while the Cardinals would tally twice in the final quarter, an 8-yard pass to sophomore Sam Smith with 11:25 remaining and a 9 yard scamper to the endzone by Andrew LaTrash that ended the scoring for the contest.

A day earlier, the junior varsity gridders opened their season with a home win, 18-6 over the Park View youngsters.  The Cardinals host the Knights at 4pm Thursday, September 4th on Fannon Field.

The varsity Cardinals (1-0) travel to Arlington to face diocesan rival, Bishop O’Connell (1-0), on Saturday. The Knights pounded diocesan sister school, Paul VI (0-1), 56-14 in their season opener in Fairfax Friday night.  Ireton will look to avenge a 41-6 setback last year, a game that saw the Cardinals jump out to a 6-0 lead before the Knights rallied for the win.

The home opener for blue and silver, the contest is slated for a 2pm kickoff, admission is $5.

Great expectations for Girls Soccer

Junior all conference player, Lillian Weber, leads a veteran team of soccer players into the 2014 campaign

“The 2014 soccer season looks promising.” deadpanned a very excited head coach, Gino Leon, who enters his fourth season leading the Cardinals.  “There is a good mixture of returning varsity players with 13 along with some promising new faces, three from last year’s jv squad, and four very skilled freshmen.

They will need all the talent they can muster with a brutal schedule of quality opponents, not only from within the WCAC but also in their non conference slate, which includes a visit from perennial powerhouse, McDonogh School, in a showcase Friday night matchup at Witter Street Field at 7pm on September 19th.
“I am excited about their season.” commented the Cardinals’ AD, Bill Simmons. “The saying, ‘you forge the hardest steel in the hottest fires,’ certainly applies to this schedule. We will be ready for the post season after playing this slate.  And, I am very much looking forward to the ‘Friday Night Lights’ game with McDonogh.  We set that up to draw a school-wide crowd, nationally ranked opponent, game under the lights, should be a huge crowd and a great soccer atmosphere!  I think the entire area soccer community will want to be at this one!”
Leading this year’s squad are four senior captains: Grace Hamilton, Cori Vasques, Karen Gusmer, and Sabrina Leoncio. Their talents and overall experience should help guide the team to another successful season.
In goal junior Amy Krotine should provide security guarding the net.  Krotine was named a second team ALL-WCAC selection last season.
Anchoring the defensive line along with Vasques and Gusmer, are seniors Shaefer Cabaniss, Bridgette Snydstrup, and Camille Polson, who will provide steady play. Add in juniors Rebecca Mueller and Susie Burns, along with sophomores Genevieve Thanh and Catherine Lo Grande and Leon thinks opponents will find goals hard to come by.
Seniors Grace Hamilton and Sabrina Leoncio lead a talented group of midfielders, who along with juniors Lisa Snydstrup, Melanie Hart and freshmen Laura Mueller, Frances Hamilton, and Francesca Leoncio will display what Coach Leon describes as “an attractive possesion style of soccer”.
Up front, the offensive unit will be led by tow-time all WCAC forward, Lillie Weber, who also saw All-Met honors last year, and Grace Hersey, another all league selection. Their experience will help freshman Grace Skoplan who is a pleasant addition to the forward line, as her creativity and goal savvy should create many scoring opportunities for herself and her teammates.
The coaching staff is extremely excited about the upcoming season. The talent is evident and with a bit of luck, the Cardinals should not only provide a beautiful brand of soccer, but also see some grand results on the scoreboard.
But, it is among the most challenging schedules Bishop Ireton’s girls have seen in years. Once again the Cardinals head to the McDonogh School for a Friday, Saturday round of tournament play against some of the mid-Atlantic’s best high school teams.  The redbirds have a rematch with Bethesda-Chevy Chase, who they edged 2-1 at this event a year ago, then challenge Liberty High School of Maryland on Saturday.   Ireton opens the 2014 regular season with the always formable National Cathedral School on Wednesday before heading to McDonogh.  A visit to Visitation and the Cubs’ new field await in week 2.  The WCAC’s heavyweights, Good Counsel (Oct 14th) and Bishop O’Connell (Oct 7th), will both pay a visit this year to the Cardinals during conference play.  Archbishop Spalding of Severn, Maryland, makes an late September call on the Cardinals as well.

Cardinals have big tennis turnout, strong returning cast

All conference player, junior Stephanie Lin leads a Cardinal tennis team loaded with girls this season.

This season’s tryouts for the Cardinals tennis yielded  its biggest turnout in the Coach Sloper-Johnson era, one spanning eight seasons.

After graduating  5 seniors last year, 36 ladies tried out for the JV/Varsity squads. Bishop Ireton  has  the team’s most valuable player, junior Stephanie Lin returning along with varsity letterwinners Kiersten Parker, Haley McKeen and Molly Jeffers.

These newcomers have been working hard these past couple of weeks to secure the final two varsity singles spots as well as possible berths on the three varsity doubles assignments.  Finding those new players will be key to securing a strong lineup top to bottom for Bishop Ireton in the always tough Washington Catholic Athletic Conference’s fall season.
Coach Katie Sloper-Johnson’s charges open the tennis campaign on Thursday, September 4th when they host the Saints of St Stephens/St Agnes School at Wakefield Park at 4pm. The junior varsity squad will drop in on the Saints on St Stephens Road where Coach Tom Noone’s team opens their 2014 season visiting the scarlet and green.  That match will also begin at 4pm.

Raring to go after an impressive summer of camps and scrimmages, the junior varsity football Cardinals opened t he 2014 season with an 18-6 win over the Park View Patriots of Sterling, Virginia.

Freshman Ben Siedlarz found sophomre Erik Kwelberg in the back of the end zone to start the Ireton scoring.  Soon it would be Andrew Hershey and Josh Hensley driving the Ireton offense with Hershey scoring a rushing touchdown.

Bishop Ireton benefitted from strong line play from their young players up front.  Defensively, it was a group of linebackers, Jordan Hansen, Declan Sofield, and Spencer Retcher that denied the Patriots many scoring opportunities.

Redbirds (1-0)  host rival Bishop O’Connell on Thursday at 4pm.
