Cardinals’ Soccer races past Visitation, 5-0

Grace Hamilton heads the ball for the Cardinals. Her goal against Georgetown Visitation off a corner kick was one of 5 Ireton goals on the day.

Paced by a pair of goals from junior Lilly Weber, Bishop Ireton cruised to a 5-0 soccer over Georgetown Visitation Friday afternoon on Fannon Field.

The talented attacker used her expert ball handling and sharp shooting skill to score in the game’s 13th and 31st minutes to give the Cardinals a 2-0 advantage they carried into the intermission.

With Amy Krotine directing the defense and turning away all the Cub shots, Grace Hamilton scored a spectacular header off  a corner kick in the 51st minute and freshman Grace Sklopan essentially ended the visitors’ chances when she scored on a penalty kick a moment later to make it 4-0.

Freshman Frances Hamilton got into the act in the game’s 67th minute when she hammered a shot on goal, deflecting off a defender and into the net for Ireton’s 5th and final goal of the game.

Bishop Ireton’s non conference match with Flint Hill on Tuesday was cancelled when Flint Hill discovered they were also slated by the ISL for a conference match that they could not reschedule.

The break provides the Cardinals with preparation time and a chance to focus on the Friday match up with the country’s number 6 ranked, undefeated McDonogh School of Owings Mills, Maryland under the lights.   Kickoff is 7pm at Witter Drive Field #2, a Cardinal Crazy “white out” with Rocklands BBQ concessions scheduled to be on hand.

Boys’ Soccer keeps rolling, 4-1 at Potomac

Junior Joey Faddoul, (10) scored 2 of Ireton's four goals in a 4-1 win over The Potomac School in McLean Friday. The win pushed Ireton to 4-1 on the season with Archbishop Carroll opening WCAC at Witter Drive Field #2 on Tuesday.

Coach Jon Norem’s lads continued their strong start to the 2014 campaign with a convincing 4-1 win over The Potomac School in McLean Friday in boys’ soccer.  The win boosted the Cardinals to 4-1 on the year, primed for their WCAC opener Tuesday when Archbishop Carroll visits Bishop Ireton.

While Bishop Ireton goalie Matt Poling was making exceptional saves early to keep the visitors locked in a scoreless battle, Matt Breiner got the Cardinals on the scoreboard in the first half when he deflected a shot off a defender to grab a 1-0 lead late in the period.

Joey Faddoul took charge in the second half, Ireton springing the junior loose for a a pair of one-on-one plays and the junior beat the keeper both times, chipping the Panther net minder for his second goal, to swell the Cardinals’ advantage to 3-0.

George Mereu was in the right spot and cleaned up a rebound late in the second half and the margin ballooned to 4-0 before Potomac School got a marker on the board for the 4-1 final.

The week ahead is a busy one for the redbirds, after a date on Tuesday with the Lions to open league play at 4pm, Bishop Ireton (4-1) will call on the defending Division I state champions, St Stephens/St Agnes on Wednesday.  That IAC/WCAC matchup is slated for a 4:15 start.

Tennis edged by Stone Ridge, PVI

Number 1 singles, senior Kirsten Parker, won her singles and doubles matches against PVI, but the Cardinals were edged 5-4.

The Cardinals, battling the ISL Stone Ridge Gators, rival Paul VI, and some illness to players, couldn’t over come the combination in back-to-back one game setbacks in girls’ tennis action.

The Alexandrians got off to a fast start with number 1 singles, Kirsten Parker, number 2, junior Stephanie Lin, and number 3 Haley McKeen posting wins. Parker triumphed 9-7, Lin winning 8-6 as did McKeen.  The Gators rallied to win in the number 4 singles match and swept the doubles to escape with the 4-3 win in the four singles, 3 doubles format.

Bishop Ireton headed to Fairfax High School on Sept 11th to battle Paul VI’s Panthers, back in the WCAC with the 6 singles, 3 doubles format.  The Cardinals got wins from Lin and McKeen at number 3 singles, both by 8-6 counts.

The doubles teams of Parker/ Lin at number 1 doubles got an 8-6 victory and the number 3 doubles team of Laney Delaney/Emily Owens squeaked by in a tiebreaker 9-7 (7-1).

“We played very well this week, all the matches were close.” said coach Katie Johnson-Sloper.  “We are making improvements every time out, the girls’ are headed in the right direction with their tennis.”

Cardinals travel to McLean to challenge another ISL tennis heavyweight, The Potomac School. Singles play begins at 4:15pm on the campus of the School.  Ireton returns to conference play when Elizabeth Seton visits Wakefield Park courts for a WCAC matchup on Thursday at 4pm.

Field Hockey Picks up 1st WCAC win, 5-0

Cardinals battle Knights in field hockey action.

The Cardinals improved to 2-0, 1-0 in WCAC play with its second shutout, this time a 5-0 drubbing of rival Bishop O’Connell on Fannon Field Monday.

“I felt the girls played extremely well, they showed good off the ball movement as well as a strong midfield presence.” said head coach, Erin Simons, in her fourth season at helm of the young program.  “It was a great first WCAC conference game win and we look forward to refining our skills in practice, taking a deeper look at our technical pieces and putting it all together in the next few games.”

Bishop Ireton dominated play, the final statistics showing the Cardinals recorded 15 shots on goal to 4 for the visitors. The margin was substantial in penalty corners as well, with the redbirds holding a 14-2 advantage in that key category as well.

Grace Fletcher opened the barrage for the home team, scoring with 22:14 remaining in the opening half.  Christine Macey made it 2-0 shortly afterwards, the first of two goals she would score in the game, tallying at 16:36 remaining.  The Knights would steady the ship at that point, and the teams went to intermission separated by a pair of goals and the Cardinals holding a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal.  The second half, however, would unfold much differently.

Macey and Kelly Mathews doubled the Bishop Ireton advantage in the first 15 minutes of the second half and the Cardinals began to pepper the Knights with shots and pressure that led to 11 second half corners.  Callan McCormick scored the Cards 5th and final goal with 8:18 remaining, though the Alexandria school continued to press their diocesan rivals to the game’s conclusion.

Ireton’s JV likewise pounded O’Connell, 7-0 with Mary Cate Gordon scoring three times for the young redbirds.

Next up for Bishop Ireton is Osbourne Senior High School on Saturday. JV tilt opens at 9am with varsity slated for 10:30.

Volleyball goes 4-1 in weekend tourney action

Ireton's Stephanie Cabrera (center) was named to the all tournament team with 12 aces, 12 digs, and 39 kills in the 5 match event.

A busy but fruitful Saturday for the Bishop Ireton volleyball team as they charged through four opponents enroute to a second place finish in the 2014 Tip Off Tournament at Fredericksburg Christian School Saturday.  The tourney selected senior Stephanie Cabrera, with 12 service aces and 39 kills, and junior Lauren Conyngham to the all-tourney team from among a field of eight schools.

Bishop Ireton blitzed Model School in the opening round, 25-3, 25-18 in the best of three format.  Cabrera had 5 service aces and 4 kills in the contest freshman Francesca Littleton contributed 4 kills and sophomore Connor Wood chipped in 3. Erika Cabot was credited with 3 blocks while Angela Kammen had a pair of digs for the Cardinals.

The Alexandria Catholic school then defeated Eastern Mennonite 2-0 with a 25-22 win in the first set and 25-19 win in set two.  Cabrera had a team-high 12 kills while Wood added 5 and Jordenne Gerard earned a pair of blocks for Ireton.

In the third matchup, the Cardinals rolled by Seton School of Manassas with the help of 5 aces from Cabrera and senior Catie Hoffman, three and two respectively, and a team-high 4 kills from Kammen to win 25-10 and 25-13.  On to the semifinals and Peninsula Catholic.

The Newport News school featured an impressive front line, but the Cardinals played one of their best matches of the young season in denying the Knights the opportunity to exploit their size advantage at the net in another 2-0 sweep to move to the finals.  Once again, Stephanie Cabrera led Ireton with 11 kills and a pair of digs, Kammen pitched in 3 kills and a pair of service aces.

For the third time in as many years, the Cardinals faced host Fredericksburg Christian in the finals.  Ireton prevailed in 2012, the Eagles claimed the title in 2013.  Once again the 2014 championship would be a nailbiter and come down to the wire.

Ireton claimed the first set, 25-16 before the FCS outside hitters began to make their presence known.  That outside hitting gave the hosts the second set by a 25-19 count, and they outlasted the Cardinals in the deciding third set by the narrowest of margins, 15-13, to win the event.

Coach Kathy Gutmann sees the busy Saturday as a positive step as the Cardinals return to WCAC play at Elizabeth Seton on Tuesday. “We played a lot of volleyball and we consistently played well. It was a very good day for us, I like where we are and I know we are ready to go to Elizabeth Seton.”

JV matches begin at 4:30 and the varsity is slated for a 6pm start in Bladensburg.

Episcopal edges Cardinals, 1-0 for tourney title

Sophomore goalkeeper Matt Poling gave the Cardinals a chance with a near perfect effort but Ireton fell 1-0 in the finals to Episcopal Saturday.

There are days when a team does everything except win.  On a hot, humid Saturday Bishop Ireton played aggressively, controlled the pace, seemingly dominating play for much of the 80 minutes of action.  But a first half header turned out to the only goal of the contest in Episcopal’s 1-0 win over the Cardinals in the championship of Episcopal’s four-team tourney.  Friday the Cambridge crew walloped Blue Ridge 5-1 while the Maroon cruised by the Potomac School.

Coach Jon Norem’s squad didn’t seem to be slowed by the heat and humidity as they attacked the offensive zone repeatedly in the second half desperate  for the equalizer.  They buzzed the net, putting quality shots on goal, Patrick Reilly just missed seven minutes into the final half and Jeremy Guillaud broke free but couldn’t beat the Maroon keeper from 15 yards out.  As the game wore on, Episcopal found some scoring opportunities, but sophomore goalkeeper Matt Poling turned away a number of chances to keep Ireton within one.

It was a physical contest on both sides, so injury time played a factor as the hydration stoppages also gave coaches time to scheme during the game’s final, frantic 20 minutes.  And, though the Cardinals got their chances, they couldn’t get the equalizer.

“We really played well today, but just couldn’t get the results.” said Norem after the game. “We needed a couple players to step in and play well and I was pleased with their efforts.”

Ireton advanced with a convincing 5-1 win the first round over Blue Ridge, giving them 13 goals in the season’s first two matches.  The Cardinals held a 2-1 advantage at the intermission before reeling 3 unanswered goals in the final half. “I thought Blue Ridge played much better in the second half, but that is how this game goes sometimes.”

Joey Faddoul led the Cardinals with a pair of goals, Henson Webre, Paul Poling, and Gabby Sampaio all added a one for the cardinal and gold Friday evening.

Next up for Bishop Ireton is a Tuesday night trip to The Bullis School. JV opens at 4:30, varsity game is slated for a 6pm start.  Admission to the game in Potomac, Maryland is free.

Saints edge Cardinal tennis, 5-2

Junior Molly Jeffers battled back to win the tiebreaker in action against St Stephens/St Agnes School on September 4th at Wakefield Park.

Bishop Ireton’s girls tennis team battled heat, humidity, and a favored St Stephens/St Agnes squad Thursday at the Wakefield Park tennis courts before falling 5-2.

Playing a four singles, three doubles match format, the Cardinals found themselves in tight contests early in the singles match ups.  The Saints’ Jessica Gu pulled away from a 4-3 advantage to win the number 1 singles 8-4 over senior Kirsten Parker, while junior Stephanie Lin battled back from 3-2 down to overcome St. Stephens’ Haley Hassel 8-4 at the number 2 singles. Lin gamely topped the talented Hassel, but also played through cramping in her calf in the final game of their match.

Senior Haley McKeen was defeated by Emma Somer in the number  three singles, but Molly Jeffers battled back from behind to win in a tiebreaker, outlasting Alex Kamm of the Saints in the four position of the lineup.  Tied at 2-2, the focus shifted to the doubles play, where the Cardinals needed to steal two of three to upset the ISL school.

Palmer Voorhes and Anne Edwards took the number one singles match by a 8-2 count, then sealed the win with another 8-2 over the number 2 doubles and a 9-7 thriller at number 3 doubles.

Bishop Ireton (0-1) hosts Stone Ridge Wednesday at Wakefield Park, match begins at 4pm. They play their first away match Monday, September 15th when they travel to The Potomac School for a 4:15 start.  The junior varsity girls visit Potomac this Monday, September 8th at 4:15.

Girls Soccer splits a pair in McDonogh Invitational

Goalkeeper Amy Krotine had a strong tournament in goal for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals girls’ soccer team joined other elite high school programs from throughout the midAtlantic region over the weekend for a pair of games at the McDonogh School of Owings Mills, Maryland.

On Friday night, Ireton had a rematch of last year’s opener with Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School.  In 2013, the redbirds edged B-CC 2-1, this year, however, the Maryland public school exacted some measure of revenge with a 4-1 triumph over Bishop Ireton.

The Cardinals, under Coach Gino Leon, continue to search for the right combination in their lineup and Friday’s contest gave the Ireton mentor more ideas.  “We have played three very, very good soccer teams.  Doing that is extremely valuable in discovering what works and what needs some fine tuning.  You can’t hide weaknesses playing at this level.” said Leon of the season to date. “I think we did some really good things so far, we have improved each time out.  We will work on some things, keep getting better. ”

Leon suggested the team looked good in the Friday contest, but some defensive miscues by the Cardinals put them in a hole.   Things were better on Saturday.

Saturday morning, the team rebounded from the setback on Friday night and dominated Liberty High School for a 4-2 win.

Lilly Weber tallied three times for Bishop Ireton, Grace Hersey scored a goal as well.  Coach Leon credited Francesca Leoncio and Rebecca Mueller with assists in the game, but had special praise for the improved play of his back line.

“Amy Krotine played a great game for us” said Leon, “and senior Shaefer Cabaniss worked tirelessly on defense.  We needed that. Obviously, Lilly had another strong game and the improved play on defense was important.”

Bishop Ireton (1-2) has another tiger by the tail on Tuesday as powerhouse, Sidwell Friends hosts the Cardinals at 4:15 in Washington.

Field Hockey whitewashes St James, 4-0

Senior Hayley Snell (4) drew the praises of coaches for hustle, hard work, and leadership on the field in Ireton's 4-0 win over St. James in the season opener.

The Cardinals’ field hockey team opened its fourth season of play, third in the WCAC, with great expectations and high hopes.  The Cardinals started with a core of youngsters that are now growing up together as hockey players.  One evidence of the progress is the dominating 4-0 win in Hagerstown Friday to begin the 2014 season.

Christine Macey paced the Cardinals with a pair of goals, Jenny Travis and Kelly Mathews each added a score for the visitors.  Anna Fracasso, a second team, all-WCAC performer as a goalkeeper in 2013, picked up where she left off last fall. The plucky junior led the WCAC in save percentage last season and didn’t hurt her average in shutting out the Saints in her 2014 debut.

Ireton bolted to a 2-0 advantage at intermission, Macey getting the redbirds on the board first, Mathews woke up the crowd in the opening moments of the second half with a blast that rang loudly off the goal cage on a corner play assist from sophomore Mackenzie Wallace.  Wallace was credited by coaches with being “all over the field” in her debut as a Cardinal hockey player.

Angela Click also drew praise from the coaching staff as did Rose Meyers. The juniors anchored the defensive effort that yielded another shutout for the Cardinals and the hustle resulted in a number of turnovers and stops for the Cardinals.  Veteran Hayley Snell was a thorn in the Saints’ side all day, her work in the offensive zone resulted in a number of critical corners for Ireton in the win.

Little time to celebrate the win as rival Bishop O’Connell calls on the Cardinals Monday afternoon in a varsity/junior varsity tilt that will be the WCAC opener for both squads. Varsity starts at 4pm, JV approximately 5:30.

Second Half lets Knights overcome Bishop Ireton, 54-28

Sam Smith hauls in a Dickinson TD pass, one of three Cardinal TD tosses on the day.

When you play a favored opponent, the best recipe for success is to play a nearly perfect game, get some breaks, and make the other guy get nervous.  For one half of football, the Cardinals gave favored Bishop O’Connell all they could handle on a steamy hot afternoon in Arlington Saturday in front of a large crowd, almost evenly divided between home team and the visiting Cardinals.  It was the game’s second half that finally caught up to the Alexandrians, and the Knights exploited some early miscues to break up a thriller in the making, racing to a 54-28 win.

Bishop O’Connell opened the scoring in the game’s first 75 seconds, working to midfield before senior Michael Galvan found junior speedster Brandon Magee over the middle and off for a 53-yard touchdown.  Neither team could mount another scoring drive until Ireton got on the board in a wild second quarter on an 80-yard drive, culminating in an 11-yard TD pass to sophomore Sam Smith. David Cooper’s PAT knotted the score at 7-7 with 11:27 to play in the half.

Three minutes later, a penalty gave the home team renewed life and Magee caught his second touchdown pass of the day at 8:07 and O’Connell jumped back in front, 14-7.  The Cardinals counterattacked on their next possession and the dangerous Joe Dickinson to  Drew Smith combination connected for the fourth time in the young season from 22-yards and again the clubs were tied.

Anton Woody bulled his way for one yard to finish the Knights’ third scoring drive of the half at 5:17 and O’Connell was back in front, 21-14.  An Ireton fumble set up another touchdown for the Knights when Ted Terwilliger hauled in another Galvan aerial from 18 yards out with only :27 remaining in the high scoring second quarter.  Just as some may have thought that third touchdown of the quarter would have deflated the upstart Cardinals, Drew Smith sent the visitors to the locker room fired up as bolted down the field 85 yards for a touchdown on the ensuing kickoff to pull Ireton to 28-21 with :17 remaining.  That did end the track meet that was the second period.

Junior Kendall Byrd picked off a Dickinson pass on Ireton’s first possession of the second half and raced 26 yards untouched into the end zone and gave DJO a 35-21 lead.   Moments later it would happen again, this time junior Myles Hudzick would gather in a tipped aerial and gallop 54 yards for another defensive score. A blocked PAT left the scoreboard reporting a 41-28 deficit for the visitors from Cambridge Road as the game moved into the final period of play following another Knights’ touchdown toss.  Sophomore Stacey Watts raced around end for 22 yards for O’Connell’s final score of the day and Dickinson ended the scoring for the day with his second toss to Smith for a 34-yard touchdown strike.

It was a hard hitting affair, one with a number of penalties on O’Connell in the first half, and a second half where Ireton miscues cost the Cardinals a chance at the upset.  But overall, the visitors had to be credited with hard nosed, spirited play; they never quit, played a disciplined game, and showed the same spirited enthusiasm the large contingent of Cardinal Crazies brought to Msgr. McMurtrie Stadium Saturday.

The Cardinals (1-1)  finally return home to officially open the new FieldTurf Revolution artificial turf surface when the Bulldogs of St. Albans (1-0) pay a visit to Fannon Field. The DC all boys school won their opener, 12-0 over Anacostia High School Saturday. Kickoff is set for 2pm, the pregame ceremonies, including the blessing of the field begins at 1:45.
