Knights overcome Cardinals 78-68 in Arlington

Senior Ritchie Kamtchoum (22) had a career-high 7 points in Ireton's 78-68 setback at O'Connell

The visiting Cardinals were not satisfied to roll over on senior night at Bishop O’Connell, battling the favored Knights for four quarters, but falling 78-68 in the regular season finale for both teams Friday in Arlington.  The win improved O’Connell’s record to 22-6 overall, 15-3 in WCAC action while the Cardinals fell to 15-13, 6-12 in league play.

O’Connell opened quickly, taking a 20-12 first quarter advantage and pushing their advantage to 41-30 at halftime. The Cardinals would hang tough in the second half, closing the margin to 7 in the final period before the Knights closed the game with a 10-point margin.

Romelo Trimble plagued the Cardinals all night with a game-high 31 points and Leroy Butts added 15, Kamrin Moore 10.  Senior Junior Etou hauled down 14 rebounds for O’Connell and Trimble collected 10.  For the scrappy Cardinals, senior captain Louie Khouri and junior Patrick Moseh each scored 19 points, reliable Dan Noe added 15 of his own. Senior Ritchie Kamtchoum had a career-high 7 points for Ireton and Taylor McHugh added 7 as well.  Khouri remained hot from beyond the arc with 4 3-pointers, as did Trimble with 5.

Bishop Ireton heads to the postseason conference tourney as the number 8 seed, hosting Archbishop Carroll on Thursday at 7pm in Godley Gym. The winner advances to a 2:45pm Saturday date with top-seeded Gonzaga at Gallaudet University in Washington. WCAC semifinals are Sunday, championship game is slated for Monday at American University’s Bender Arena, as are the semi final matchups.  No passes are permitted for the first round game at Bishop Ireton, admission is $5 for all fans school-aged and above on Thursday.

3 place in St Albans wrestling as grapplers head to States

Bishop Ireton’s young wrestlers left a number of holes in their lineup, but wrestled well enough to grab 15th place as a team in the 28-team St Albans Wrestling tournament Feb 7-8.  The Cardinals saw three wrestlers medal at the event.

285 pound senior Jimmy Keegan, the top-seeded wrestler in this week’s state meet, finished 4th to lead the Cardinals. Classmate Nick Womack, wrestling in his final Albans meet secured a 5th place finish, and junior Conor Reilly at 106 had a good tournament in earning an 8th place finish for Ireton.

Wyoming Seminary of Pennsylvania won the team trophy, Good Counsel was second. Ireton’s 15th place was one better than Bishop O’Connell and ahead of WCAC rival Gonzaga.  St Stephens, another local rival also finished behind the Cardinals at the DC event.

Upcoming is the independent schools championship at Glen Allen High School in Richmond. Favorites include Benedictine and St Christopher’s from Richmond, Paul VI from northern Virginia and Lynchburg’s Liberty Christian Academy.

Plenty left in the Cardinals in 72-45 Rout of Bishop McNamara

Senior Louie Khouri, (10) is the team captain and leading scorer with 22 in win over Mustangs.

Coming off a tough weekend with DeMatha on Friday and a strong effort falling short Sunday with top-ranked Gonzaga, Bishop Ireton was staring at a pair of road games with tough Bishop McNamara and O’Connell to end the regular season.  Any concerns for Coach Neil Berkman that his charges may be out of gas were answered quickly when the Cardinals bolted to a 19-5 first quarter lead enroute to a 72-45 pasting of the Mustangs (13-13, 8-9).

McNamara would rebound from the blitz in the first quarter and battle back to within 25-23 by intermission.   But this time Stephen Jiggetts, who plagued Ireton in their first meeting, would not get enough help to overcome four Cardinals who scored in double figures in their second meeting.

The third quarter was a repeat of the offensive fireworks the redbirds demonstrated out of the locker room in the first half.  Building a 14-point lead in the first quarter, Ireton dumped 28 on the stunned Mustangs coming out in the second half to explode a 2-point nailbiter into 19-point rout heading into the final period.  Ireton added 8 more to the margin with a 19-11 final period of action.

Bishop Ireton was led by Louie Khouri with 22 points, including five 3-pointers. Patrick Moseh and Da’von Wiley each scored 14, junior Dan Noe had 13.  Richie Kamtchoum and Andrew Perham rounded out the scoring with a free throw each.  Jiggetts led Bishop McNamara with 12, Kevin Robbins and Jordan Crockett had 9 each in the loss.

At 15-12, 6-11 in WCAC action, the Cardinals have their best regular season record since Paul DiStephano led the 1986 team to a 19-9 mark in regular season play.  They look to the finale with Bishop O’Connell in Arlington with the possibility of a 7 seed for the Cards and a date in Godley Gym with the conference’s 10th seed. An 8 seed finish gets Ireton a home date with the number 9 seed.  And, currently ranked #6 in VISAA’s division I poll, the Cardinals may have the opportunity to host a first round state playoff game down the road.

Record-setting win for Cardinals over Bishop McNamara, 67-45

Sophomore Alex Stipano contributed 12 points for Ireton in the 67-45 win over Bishop McNamara.

The 2012-13 Cardinals (10-16, 2-15) erased the record for largest margin of victory by Bishop Ireton over a WCAC opponent Tuesday night with a lopsided 67-45 win over the Mustangs of Bishop McNamara.  The 2006 Cardinals defeated Elizabeth Seton by a 20-point margin to set the previous mark for margin of victory in a WCAC game.

“We practiced taking the open shot” commented head coach, Derek Campbell after the game.  “This was the goal, to play this well and shoot the ball like this, not just making the shots, but recognizing good shots.”

The game opened with the Cardinals moving the ball offensively and living on the three point shots. Their first three baskets of the game were three’s, and the home team was a tremendous  9 of 17 for the game.  Alex Stipano converted two of the three she made from beyond the arc in the opening minutes. The Mustangs held a slim 12-11 lead after one period.

Mara Celis-Copelotti took the offense on her shoulders and outscored McNamara 8-2 during a stretch where Ireton would begin to open the lead in the second period. Ireton would then hang on to the three point lead into intermission at 26-23.

Both teams struggled offensively coming out of the locker room until Stipano broke the stalemate with a three and senior Camille Weber’s free throw made it 30-25. Soon the Cardinals would begin to chip away while the Mustangs struggled to find any offense. Julia O’Brien began to find the range with her hook shots and close range jumpers, Weber threw in a three and the lead became nine. Ireton would enter the final period with a 10-point advantage and a huge final quarter about to begin with Ireton up 41-31.

Ileanna Gutierrez scored 9 for Ireton and the Cardinals substituted liberally and seemed to score at will. 26-points in the final stanza alone and the suddenly it was a 22-point bulge, and could have been more except for a 8-2 run late by the visiting Mustangs.

Four Cardinals scored in double figures in the game, Weber with 13, Stipano and O’Brien with 12 each, Celis-Copelotti with 11. Gutierrez had 9, Cece Leone and Isabelle Kendall added 4, Kelly Gallagher rounded out the scoring with a pair of free throws.

The regular season ends for the Cardinals with Senior night for four Ireton players against rival Bishop O’Connell. The triple header begins with freshmen at 4pm, JV at 5:45, and varsity at 7:30.  Seeding for the WCAC will follow, but the Cardinals can finish no higher than a tie for 8th with the Knights, but would lose a tie breaker because the Knights beat a higher seeded team during the regular season.

Carroll too much for Cardinals, 61-40

It was, to paraphrase Dickens, the best of times and the worst of times Sunday as Bishop Ireton played a strong first half, but were overwhelmed in the second half in a road loss at Archbishop Carroll Sunday, 61-40.

Coach Derek Campbell’s team had given St Johns and Good Counsel competitive games in their previous two starts, and ended the first period in Washington tied at 11-11.  They hung around through the second quarter where neither team could generate much offense and trailed only 20-17 at halftime.

The second half started an entirely different ballgame, however, as the Lions scored 21 points in the third quarter alone, to blow open a close game 41-27. The fourth quarter was more of the same as the Lions laid another 20 points on the Cardinals for a 21-point final margin of victory.

For Ireton, senior Mara Celis-Copelotti led all scorers with 17 points and guard Camille Weber had 12. Senior Julia O’Brien had 6, but no other Cardinal had more than 2.  It was a struggle from the field for Ireton, they managed only 8 field goals in the contest, 3 of which were from beyond the three-point arc.  They stayed close with the help of accurate free throw shooting, cashing in on 27 opportunities to earn a staggering 21 points of their total.

The Lions, by contrast, had 23 field goals, but made only 9 of 18 shots from the charity line.  Christian Washington led Archbishop Carroll with 13, Olivia Turner had 11, and Lyndsey Downing added 10 for the home team, who improved to 9-14 on the year, 5-9 in the WCAC.

Bishop Ireton (9-14, 1-13) stays on the bus to head to St Mary’s Ryken Tuesday for a JV/varsity doubleheader. JV tips off at 5:15 in Leonardtown, varsity about 7pm. The squad visits Elizabeth Seton on Friday before ending the regular season campaign next week with home games with Bishop McNamara on Tuesday and senior night on Friday, Feb 15th when Bishop O’Connell visits Father Godley Gym.

3’s a charm as Cardinals top St Mary’s Ryken 63-49

Coach Neil Berkman during a timeout in Cardinals 63-49 win over St Mary's Ryken.

Nine three-point baskets provided more offense than the visiting Knights could handle as Bishop Ireton won their second straight WCAC matchup Tuesday in Alexandria 63-49.

“We moved the ball very well, played our offense the way we’ve practiced it.” according to the Cardinals head coach, Neil Berkman.  The win improved the Cardinals to 14-10 on the year, 5-9 in the WCAC, while Ryken fell to 9-15, 1-14 in league play.

The Knights came out strong with Stan Kaya hitting the first 6 of his game-high 17 points for the visitors who held an 18-14 advantage after one period of action. The home squad took charge in the second stanza however, outscoring the Maryland team 17-8 behind balanced Ireton scoring and a pair of threes from junior Ty Quarles to lead at intermission 31-26.

Ireton would continue on a torrid pace, scoring another 17 points in third period and extending their margin to 48-36 entering the last period of play. They would substitute liberally in the game’s final minutes and cruise home to the win.

Cardinals again had multiple players in double figures, led by Louie Khouri’s 16. Junior Patrick Moseh had 14, classmate Dan Noe added 13. Ty Quarles scored 8, Wynn Miller had 5, Dav’pn Wiley 3, Taylor McHugh a pair, along with Khyree Robinson.  Kaya led all scorers with 17, Donte Etheridge 11, and Jordan Oakley contributed 8 for the Knights.

Cardinals look to their final 2 home games against perennial powerhouses DeMatha Friday, Gonzaga on Sunday, then end the regular season on the road at Bishop McNamara Tuesday and Bishop O’Connell on Friday.  A home first round game appears likely for the Cardinals, who are wrestling Good Counsel for the 7th seed in the postseason event.  Ireton, currently ranked 7th in the VISAA polls, eyes a state playoff berth as well.

Gonzaga Escapes the Cardinals, 67-61

Junior Patrick Moseh (2) scored a team-high 20 points before a packed Fr Godley Gym Sunday afternoon game with Gonzaga.

“I couldn’t be prouder of our guys.” said head coach Neil Berkman, following the Cardinals 67-61 loss to top-ranked Gonzaga Sunday at Fr Godley Gym. Before a full house on another “Rivalry Sunday” afternoon, the Cardinals came out hard and knocked Gonzaga back on their heels early and kept the Eagles chasing the home team’s lead deep into the third quarter.   In the end, however, the purple jerseyed Gonzaga did chase down the hosts and managed to survive with a 6-point win.

Junior Taylor McHugh lit the gym early with the game’s first 5 points, Louie Khouri and Da’von Wiley added hoops, and suddenly Ireton was off to a 9-2 advantage enroute to a surprising 22-11 lead after one period of play.

Gonzaga put together a 9-0 run in the second stanza behind 4  of his game high 24 points from Kris Jenkins, as well as baskets RaMond Hines and Sam Miller to close the margin to 24-21.  The Cardinals responded with 6-0 run of their own when Marquis Holland made a pair of free throws, Patrick Moseh contributed 2 free throws and Kyree Robinson slashed to the basket for a layup and a 29-21 lead.  In a see saw quarter, Gonzaga again countered and Ireton nursed a 34-29 lead into the halftime locker room.

After Dan Noe made a pair of free throws to open the third, Gonzaga’s Tavon Blackmon answered with a three, and Charles Glover responded with 2 free throws after a Moseh field goal as the game tightened to 38-34 contest.  Blackmon’s jumper tied the game at 41-41, and a three would give Gonzaga it’s first lead at 44-41. Ireton would continue to match the Eagles point for point and the third quarter ended 48-47 in favor of Gonzaga.

Hines gave the visitors breathing room with a three and Jenkins followed with a put back and a free throw and suddenly the deficit for Ireton was 58-51.   Louie Khouri hit a big three for Ireton and Moseh answered a Hines bucket with a floater to keep Ireton hanging around at 60-56.  Jordan Abdur-Ra’oof scored and was fouled, and his three point play pushed the lead to 63-56, a Charles Glover jump shot gave the Eagles a 7-point advantage as time became the enemy of a Cardinal comeback.

Moseh answered with his final basket of the game and Taylor McHugh ended the Ireton scoring as he started it with a free throw made.  Jenkins dropped a pair of free throws and McHugh’s final effort fell short in the 67-61 contest.

Gonzaga’s Jenkins led all scorers with 24 points, Ireton’s Moseh led the Cardinals with 20.  The Eagles’ Hines had 9, Blackmon 8, while the Cardinals’ McHugh added 11, Noe chipped in 8.  The game was tight, as the statistics reveal. Both squads made 5 3-pointers, each was 16-20 from the charity stripe. Gonzaga had 18 2-point field goals, while the Cardinals, with a higher shooting percentage, made but 15.  The difference was the 18-6 advantage in offensive rebounds by the Eagles.

For the visiting DC school, the win improved Gonzaga’s record to 22-3, a perfect 15-0 in the WCAC.  Ireton dropped to 14-12, 5-11 in league play with a pair of road games to end the regular season.  The Cardinals visit Bishop McNamara Tuesday before the season-ending contest with rival Bishop O’Connell in Arlington Friday.  The Cardinals have a shot at the WCAC tourney number 7 seed, but an 8 seed would earn a likely date at home with St Mary’s Ryken, the winner to face the top seed at Galludet. Gonzaga as a 2-game lead with two to play to sew up the top seed.

Chin goal lifts Cardinals on Senior Night, 5-4

Freshman Jonathan Chin (68) scored the gamewinner Friday night on Senior Night at the Mount Vernon Rec Center

On a night devoted to the recognition of Bishop Ireton’s seniors, it was a Cardinal rookie, burly Jonathan Chin, that scored the game winner for Coach Tony DiCarlo’ squad in a 5-4 backyard brawl with neighboring St Stephens/St Agnes (9-6) at the Mt Vernon Recreation Center Friday night before a record standing-room only crowd.

In a hard hitting contest, the Cardinals (4-6-1) grabbed an early lead when Stephen Gerke scored the first of three goals late in the opening period to stake Ireton to a 1-0 lead. The Saints’ J. Boden would tie it at 1-1 at the 12:59 mark gone in the period, only to see Ireton’s Duke Roach put the redbirds back on top 48 seconds later.

Early in the second, Gerke was awarded a penalty shot following a Saints’ defender covering the puck in the St Stephen’s crease. While the Cardinal was foiled on his one-on-one attempt, he took care of business seconds later with a slapshot from the right circle to build the home team’s margin to 3-1 at 2:20 gone in the second.

St Stephens countered with 13:13 gone in the second period when junior Jones Veith scored the first of two goals the Saint would tally on the evening to make it a 3-2 game. 63 seconds later the Saints would tie the game at 3-3 after two periods.  Bishop Ireton had a 24-10 unofficial advantage in shots on goal, but the final period saw the teams open even on the scoreboard.

Saints senior captain Drew Nirenburg would give the Saints their first and only lead of the night in the 4th minute of play in the third at 4-3, but Gerke responded with just over 7 minutes remaining the contest with his third goal of the night and set the table for Jonathan Chin’s heroics.

With the Cardinals controlling the puck and playing in the St Stephens end for extended periods, the momentum was clearly in the home team’s corner. As the Saints battled to clear the puck, Chin rifled a wrist shot into the net with 5:42 remaining and brought the overflow Ireton faithful to their feet with a loud roar of approval.

Ireton would take a penalty moments later, but the defense, led by shot-blocking defenseman Will Chastain, and the strong play in net by Mulockey preserved the senior night win for the Cardinals.

Prior to the game, the Cardinals recognized five graduating seniors from the program, now in it’s 15th varsity season on Cambridge Road. Team captain Nick Tangora, a four-year letter winner, Chastain, another 4-year veteran and assistant captain, as well as assistant captain, defenseman Joey Gorman, a two-year letterwinner, and defenseman Jacob Bisnett, a two-time letter winner. Stepping up when an experienced goalie was unavailable to the club, senior Michaela Mulokey earned her first varsity letter this campaign in her initial season as a keeper. The gritty netminder was no stranger to the role, however, playing keeper for the varsity soccer and lacrosse team before lacing on skates for the Cardinals.

Stags use the long ball to sink Ireton 71-54

Senior Da'von Wily (4) had one of his best nights of the season with 11 points and strong play on defense for Ireton.

DeMatha’s Jarius Lyles scored a game-high 20 points, including three of the Stags’ 7 three-pointers in the game, as the visitors raced away in the second half to a 71-54 win in Alexandria Friday night.  DeMatha shot well all night in Godley Gym but the Cardinals hug close throughout the first half, only to see turnovers undo their upset bid in the second half.

After a high scoring first period, DeMatha gaining a 23-19 advantage, both teams struggled through a 7-5 second quarter that allowed the Cardinals to inch back to 28-26 at the break.

As so often has befallen the Cards in the one-sided series with DeMatha, a close first half is followed by a big third quarter from the Hyattsville school.  This night would be no different as the Stags came out of the locker room and a 5-point second quarter performance was followed with a 20-point third quarter and a 48-37 bulge heading to the final period of play.  With the benches emptied by the game’s conclusion, 11 different Stags scored in the contest, the shoot out from the first period resumed in the final frame enroute to the final score.

Lyles had 20 for the visitors, one of three to score in double figures. Corey Henson had 16, Terrell Allen added 11 for DeMatha (11-11, 8-6).  Dan Noe had a strong game for the Cardinals, leading Ireton with 19 points, including a three and a 4-6 night from the line. Dav’on Wiley had his best night in 2013 scoring with 11, Louie Khouri had 9, Taylor McHugh added 8, and Patrick Moseh had 7, the only Cardinals to score in the game.  DeMatha earned 28 free throw attempts, making 20, while Ireton would see only 18 opportunities, converting 14.

The Cardinals host Gonzaga in their final home game of the regular season on another “Rivalry Sunday” contest, a triple header beginning with freshmen at noon and concluding with a varsity tipoff slated for 3:30. No advanced sales were authorized for the events, but officials suggest the game will undoubtedly sell out early in the afternoon. Admission is $5 for all patrons school-aged and above.

Roadrunners too much for Bishop Ireton, 59-34

Senior Mara Celis-Copelotti is the team's leading scorer for the 2012-13 season.

After a close first period, Elizabeth Seton’s senior-dominated squad took charge of the game and cruised to a 25-point win in Bladensburg Friday night. With the 59-34 win, the ‘runners improved to 15-9, 8-7 in WCAC play, while the Cardinals fell to 9-16, 1-15 in conference action.

The game was even early with the visiting Cardinals trailing 12-10 after one period.  Seton came out with a 10-0 run to open the second quarter to lead 31-21 by halftime. They would add seven more to the lead by the end of three periods of play, 47-30, as the Ireton offensive production dwindled to only 13 second half points. Ireton was outrebounded by a 42-15 margin and had only 10 trips to the free throw line compared to 28 for the home team.

Camden Musgrave led Elizabeth Seton with14 points, Janelle Hubbard and Savannah Johnson each had 10.  Mara Celis-Copelotti again led Ireton with 10, Julia O’Brien had 8, and sophomore Alex Stipano had 7. Senior Taylor Gallaghan had one of her best offensive games with 6 and Cecilia Leone added three, but no other Cardinal got on the board this Friday evening.

Bishop Ireton returns home for its final pair of regular season games, entertaining Bishop McNamara on Tuesday and Bishop O’Connell on Friday. Tuesday the Cardinals will feature their “Play for Kay” night, raising awareness for cancer research and legendary Coach Kay Yow.  The Mustangs were dumped by Ireton in Forestville earlier in the season.  Friday the squad will hold their senior night as the rival Knights visit Godley Gym.  The Knights were Ireton’s last home victim in WCAC action last season.  Tipoff for the McNamara game is 7pm on Tuesday, the O’Connell game is the finale of a three game set beginning with freshmen at 4pm, JV at 5:45pm and varsity set for 7:30.
