Ireton volleyball upends 7th ranked Good Counsel, 25-17, 25-22, 25-18

Ashley Cabrera goes for the **** versus Episcopal in the Alexandria City championships.

Bishop Ireton’s volleyball team posted a statement win over the Washington Post’s 7th ranked squad, the defending WCAC champion Good Counsel Falcons in Fr. George Godley Gym on Wednesday. The Cardinals had not beaten the Olney school since a 3-2 win over the Falcons in 2003. With the win, Ireton improved to 7-2 on the year and evened their WCAC record at 2-2.

“It was strong, confident play by the team and a sense that they were able to ‘take care of business’ by our veteran players.” said Coach Kathy Gutmann, who posted her first win over the defending champs.  “It was one of the most exciting matches we have played here in my tenure and I was thrilled to be part of it!”

Gutmann pointed out that Sarah Hersey, Brittany Fisher, and the Cabrera sisters, Ashley and Stephanie, combined for 55 points after serves for Bishop Ireton.  Senior Emileigh Rettig had a strong game at her outside hitter position, scoring 16 kills with only one error, while Fisher added 5 kills.  Kristen Becht and Rettig combined for 37 digs on the evening for Ireton, putting the redbirds in a great position to set the tempo for the match.

After falling 25-17 in the first game, Good Counsel rallied to challenge Ireton in the second set from the start. It was a close game throughout, with Ireton showing poise and confidence in pulling away as the match hit 20 to gain the win, 25-22 in the second game.

Perhaps smelling an upset, the Cardinals pressed their attack and built an early lead that appeared to sap the energy from the surprised visitors.  As the Cardinals rolled toward the final 25-18 finale, the noise from the crowd told the story.

Bishop Ireton heads to Elizabeth Seton Monday for a date with the Roadrunners in Bladensburg, Maryland.

First Quarter Dooms Ireton to 57-27 football setback

2012 Bishop Ireton Cardinals

After five long years of futility on the gridiron, St Stephens/St Agnes played a nearly perfect first 12 minutes of football to race away to a stunning 36-0 first quarter lead on their way to a lopsided 57-27 win at home Saturday.  For the Cardinals, it was the most points allowed since Bishop O’Connell scored 62 back in 1985, well before any of this game’s contestants were born.

It was a familar face, Saints senior Darius Manora galloped 60 yards on the first play from scrimmage to put the home team on the board. After a quick three and out for the Cardinals, St Stephens would strike with lightning speed again, this time on a 36-yard pass play, Seisay to Gallahan and it was 14-0. Manora, who gained a whopping 255 yards rushing on the day, broke loose for two more long runs of 57 and 68 yards and suddenly the game was 29-0 with time remaining in the first quarter.  A PJ Zingler screen pass was intercepted and when the Saints’ Shervin took it “to the house” St Stephens sat on an unbelievable 36-0 lead after one quarter!

The Cardinals regrouped in the second quarter and began the work of bouncing back. While the defense shut out the red and green clad hosts, Brandon Paige got Ireton on the board hauling in a 35-yard pass from Zingler.  Ireton put 2 more scores on the board in the third quarter, sophomore Andrew Latrash on a three yard run, then senior Austin Carter scored on a 25-yard scamper and suddenly the lead was down to 36-21 with a quarter remaining.

St Stephens was not to be denied on this day however.   An Ireton punt turned into a spectacular 86-yard touchdown and the Saints got the ball back quickly and Manora scored his 4th of 5 touchdowns when he bolted 26 yards for a touchdown and suddenly the wind was out of the Cardinals’ sails. The Saints’ senior star capped his stellar day with an 80-yard touchdown on a pass interception.  Paige scored the visitors’ final touchdown on a 32-yard pass from Latrash, but the issue was long decided and the cardinal and gold denied their first win of the season in their third start.

Bishop Ireton (0-3) will regroup and  head back up the street next Saturday to play Episcopal in the Hummel Bowl. Kickoff Saturday is slated for 2pm.  Admission is free.

Volleyball improves to 2-0 with win over O’Connell

Setter Ashley Cabrera (6) played a strong game in Ireton's WCAC opening win over Bishop O'Connell.

Coach Kathy Guttman’s 2012 edition of Cardinal volleyball has roared out of the starting gate with a pair of impressive wins, on the road at the Maryland School for the Deaf, then a strong 3-1 win over rival Bishop O’Connell in Fr Godley Gym Tuesday night. The JV opened their campaign with straight sets, 2-0, over the Knights as well.

Ireton played O’Connell’s game in the opening match, according the Guttman, but played it well enough to pull out a 25-21 win.  In game 2, it was the Cardinals’ style of play that rose to the fore and Ireton won a decisive second game, 25-19.  Ireton came back flat, the Knights determined, as they found themselves down a pair of games and a sweep staring them head on.  Led by the future Villanova Wildcat, Clare Krickfield, O’Connell rebounded to win game three, but it was the home team’s night to shine as they captured the fourth game to win.

“We had very strong play from Ashley Cabrera setting our hitters.” said Ireton’s Guttman.   Emileigh Rettig led the home team with 16 of the 34 kills on the night while Brittany Fisher was a perfect 20 for 20 serving, including 3 aces.  Cabrera was also a perfect 19 for 19 and sister Stephanie added 18 of 19 on the night in which Ireton put 81 of 85 serves into play.  The redbirds played well on the defensive side as well. Kristen Becht led Ireton with 28 digs, Rettig added 15, Sarah Hersey 14, and the Cabreras, Ashley and Stephanie, 12 and 10.

No rest for the redbirds as they take their 1-0 WCAC record to the always tough Tartans of Holy Cross a key WCAC matchup.  This weekend Ireton will get a look at the VISAA competition in the 8-team Fredericksburg Christian tournament on Saturday at FCA.  Gametime is 10am for the opening game with Seton of Manassas.

Slow Start Dooms Cardinals in Football Opener, 27-12

A strong Ireton contingent was on hand as Hudson Sullivan (5) blocked a punt in the 27-12 setback at O'Connell.

Bishop Ireton’s Cardinals ran into a fired up group of O’Connell Knights on a sweltering hot afternoon that saw the Arlington school dedicate a new $4 million stadium complex to open the 2012 football campaign, falling 27-12 Friday.

“I can’t fault the effort,” said head coach Tony Verducci, who entered his sixth season at the helm of the Cardinals.  Indeed, the redbirds easily could have “mailed it in” after falling behind 14-0 with 3:33 left in the first quarter and 21-0 at halftime. Instead they regrouped, and as the Knights seemed to lose steam, Ireton gained momentum in the second stanza to score twice.

A disasterous start to the contest befell the Alexandrians, with their first drive stalling on their own 13.  A low snap to punter Andrew Latrash sent him scurrying up the middle of the field only to be dropped on the Ireton 2 yardline.  O’Connell wasted little time on their first drive of the season as junior Kamrin Moore bolted into the endzone with 10:28 to play. Kicker Joe Kelly’s PAT gave DJO an early 7-0 advantage.

Ireton got untracked on their second possession, an 11-play, drive that covered 32 yards before stalling on the O’Connell 37.   It was an 8-play drive for the Knights on their next possession, including overcoming 4 penalties along the way, that got the blue-shirted squad on the scoreboard next. After senior quarterback Leighton Dassau hit one of his favorite receivers on the day, junior Earon Settles for an 8 yard gain, Anton Woody sprinted 8 yards to the endzone with the home team’s second touchdown in the first period.

Both teams struggled with penalties, O’Connell would be flagged well over a dozen times in the contest, and even as the Cardinals begin to gain yardage, getting a drive into the endzone eluded them time and again in the first half.  The Knights put a 6-play, 60 yard drive together in the middle of the second period with 8:26 remaining and the host team lead bulged to 21-0.

Bishop O’Connell opened the third quarter with a 7-play drive beginning on their own 35, efficiently mixing their strong running game and passing to press to the 19 yard line. The speedy Dassau ran a 19-yard quarterback keeper nearly untouched into the endzone and the Cardinals were staring at a 27-0 deficit.  Junior Hudson Sullivan started the Ireton counterattack there however, and blocked Kelly’s 4th PAT attempt to keep the lead at 27.

The Ireton defense stiffened for the remainder of the third period, blocking an O’Connell punt and and setting up BI’s first scoring drive of the season as the quarter drew to a close.  Senior Geno Miller dashed for 15 yards on the first play of the final quarter, then PJ Zingler connected with sophomore Jairdan Walker on a spectacular 21 yard pass play to set the Cardinals on the doorstep. Miller rushed for 10 more yards following an Ireton penalty then Zingler dashed into the endzone to cut the lead to 27-6. Ireton went for two unsuccessfully.

The defense got the ball back for the Cambridge Road gang and Zingler went to work on the Ireton 38.   Miller was next up for Ireton and he capped an 8-play drive with his first touchdown as a Bishop Ireton Cardinal with 7:56 remaining in the game.  He could not, however, get back to paydirt on the PAT attempt, leaving the visitors in a 27-12 hole.  The Knights (1-0) regrouped, and while they didn’t score again in the contest, they also kept the diocesan rivals off the scoreboard to wrap up their first win of the year on the newly remodeled Msgr McMurtrie Field.

For the Cardinals, (0-1) the chance to pick up the season’s first win comes this week as they open the 2012 home schedule hosting the Bullis Bulldogs.  The blue and gold visitors will have revenge on their minds as the 2011 Cardinals handed them their only setback of the season when Ireton visited them on a warm Saturday night, escaping with a hard fought 35-27 nailbiter.   The Bulldogs (1-0) thumped St Mary’s Ryken in their season opener 40-0.  Kickoff is set for 1:30pm on Fannon Field and admission for all fans school-aged and above is $5.00.

Cardinal Rowers Have Busy Summer

Cardinal rower, Catherine Babiec, (second from right) competed for the US in rowing on the Wannsee River outside Berlin, Germany. She was one of three Cardinals rowing at the highest levels in the summer.

Though school is now  starting throughout the area,  a group of Bishop Ireton  rowing team members have been competing in their sport  during the summer months.  Three of them reached personal and  athletic bests.

Lindsay Martini, a rising senior rowing during the summer for Thompson’s Boat Club of Washington, DC,  won a gold medal in the  junior 4 with coxswain event at the U.S. Rowing Club Nationals in Camden, NJ.   She is the third Bishop Ireton rower to win a national championship.   She later was a finalist in the Canadian Henley Regatta.

Connor Padden, a rising junior, was selected to the U.S.Rowing Development Camp in Pittsburgh, PA. With participants chosen from throughout the country, it is part of U.S. Rowing’s mission to identify and work with underclass rowers to help them develop into highly competitive rowers for their high school team and perhaps future national team members.

Catherine Babiec, a rising senior and honorable mention Washington Post All-Met choice, was initially chosen for the U.S. Rowing High Performance Camp but she seat-raced herself  onto the  National Selection Camp and was chosen for a place on the 2013  Junior World Development Team.  Members of that team then went on to Berlin, Germany,  where they trained and  raced against the German Junior National team.  The Junior World Development Team is expected to serve as the core of next year’s national team going to the junior world championships.

Head Coach Eric Gehrke is looking forward to the return of these team members this fall and hopes that their experiences will be shared with all members.
