Bishop Ireton’s varsity boys and girls teams made an especially strong showing among private school competitors at Woodberry Forest’s 35th Annual Cross Country Invitational on Sept. 15.  Ireton’s boys varsity team, averaging 19:04, finished 11th overall and 3rd among private schools finishing just slightly behind Woodberry Forest and Paul VI High School.  The varsity girls team also finished strong with an average time of 22:46, taking 12th overall and 4th among private schools behind St. Catherine’s, Holy Cross and Paul VI High School.

Ireton’s top varsity boys runner, Michael LoGrande, moved late in the final tenth of a mile to finish in 18:43.  Logrande was followed by teammates Jack Leyden (18:54), Connor Pearson (19:02), John Paul Ryan (19:09), and Stephen Gottlieb
(19:34).

Katie Necochea, Ireton’s top varsity girl, came in 16th overall with a time of 21:20, followed closely by Maggie Lohrer (21:38).  Necochea and Lohrer were followed by teammates Natalie Irwin (23:24), Kaitlin Luzik (23:27), and Alex Georgi
(23:59).

The top five JV boys runners were Joe Simko (22:11), Mitchell Wooten (22:18), Thomas Ward (23:19), Jim Wiltsie (22:30), and Jack Bischoff (24:13).  Ireton’s top five JV girls were Isabella Blanco (27:30), Beth Blank (28:59), Maria Manzek (29:45), Sabrina Ruiz (29:51), and Julie Hanson (30:57).

Woodberry Forest’s course is one of the most challenging of the season, and is also a preview of the team’s final meet held on the same grounds.  Ireton’s cross country team will compete this upcoming weekend at the Oatlands Invitational in Leesburg on Saturday, Sept. 22.  The first race begins at 9:00 a.m.
