Cardinals gather before practice at Carl Sandberg during the 2011 season.

The Cardinals, at 6-4, had an impressive season this year, according to fifth year head coach Katie Sloper-Johnson.  Bishop Ireton upended defending WCAC champions, Paul VI in the regular season dual match and placed 3rd out of 9 for the WCAC tournament.

Their strong play against quality opponents, including Episcopal and Potomac School, qualified them to be the 8th seed in the VISSA State Tournament on November 8th against the #1 seed Collegiate.

Individually, Coach Sloper-Johnson  pointed out #1 singles Monica Zakaria had an undefeated 8-0 season and  an undefeated doubles season with partner Natalia Spinetto at 5-0.  She became the #1 singles finalist in the WCAC tournament and #2 doubles finalist in WCAC tournament.  Zakaria was selected as the team’s most valuable player for the 2011 campaign.

#4 Singles player Natalia Spinetto had an impressive 5-1 season and also became a finalist in the WCAC tournament for #4 singles.  Newcomer Freshman Kirsten Parker helped the team with many wins at the #3 doubles spot, including clenching victories against PVI, Seton, St. Mary’s Ryken. The win over the defending champs was a 5-4 nailbiter, highlighting the importance of the strong play from the Ireton youngster.
