Cardinal Hockey a “Band of Brothers”

It’s not unusual for a younger sibling to follow in the footsteps of an older sibling in the world of youth sports.  In fact, it’s fairly common.  However, what is not as common is the opportunity for them to be able to play together on the same team.  This is especially true in high school sports.

That’s what makes the story of this season’s varsity ice hockey team at Bishop Ireton High School so remarkable.  When the hockey season opens for Ireton, a small Catholic High School located in Alexandria, Virginia, there will be not one but four sets of brothers donning the black jerseys with the bright red Cardinal crest on the front.

From left to right in the photo are Dan Tangora (2011), Nick Tangora (2013), Dillon Roach (2012), Duke Roach (2014), William Chastain (2013), Robert Chastain (2011), Stephen Gerke (2014), and Ben Gerke (2012).  All 8 players, who make up nearly half the squad, also play club hockey for various local organizations including the DC Capitals, Potomac Patriots, Prince William Panthers, and Northern Virginia Ice Dogs.

Bishop Ireton opens the Varsity season next Friday night, November 19th, with a 6:45 pm game against Broad Run at Kettler Capitals Iceplex.  It will be Ireton’s first season with a Varsity squad since the 2006 campaign.

Cardinals Soar on Senior Day, 34-21

Soph PJ Zingler's 292 yards passing made him first Cardinal to throw for 2,000 in a season

St Mary Ryken held the Cardinals on the first series of downs but it was all Bishop Ireton the rest of the first half as the home team stormed to a 34-0 halftime advantage and cruised home with a 34-21 win on Senior Day.

Junior Anthony Rivers broke a 97 yard run to open the scoring at 3:45 left in the opening period and Malcolm Westbrook followed with an 18 yard scamper to put Ireton ahead 14-0 after a period of play.   Meanwhile, the Knights found little room to run in the first half, they would finish the contest 3 for 13 on third down conversions, and punted four times in the first half.

The Cardinals meanwhile continued to attack St Mary’s with a punishing air attack that saw sophomore PJ Zingler fire a pair of touchdown passes and ring up 247 yards through the air in the first half. He finished the contest with 292 yards, pushing him to over 2,000 for the season, a new Ireton record. Likewise, speedy junior Malcolm Westbrook set a season standard with 49 catches.   It was  another long strike, this one by Brandon Price-Williams for 89 yards early in the second quarter that may have put the game out of reach for the visitors.  Price-Williams took a short pass in the flat, broke numerous tackles to get into open field, then the Cardinal track star showed his blazing speed pulling away for the sprint to pay dirt.

Junior Andrew Bladen took Ireton to the end zone with a ten-yard dash with 3:42 remaining in the half and senior Theo Daubresse added his fourth PAT of the afternoon.  Zingler struck one final time, hitting senior Tommy Gallinaro for a 39-yard touchdown pass and the Cardinals deliberately failed on the PAT to avoid the high school “running clock” run at a 35 point margin from taking effect.

The second half belonged to the Ireton reserves and the Cardinals played everyone on the sideline as the Knights found some life in the final stanza, recording 21 unanswered points as the young Cardinals got plenty of work and the seniors basked in the glow of a final win on Fannon Field.

The Cardinals ended the campaign with two consecutive wins to finish 3-7 while saying farewell to Daubresse, Eddie Busch, Zayne Bush, Gallinaro, Anthony Rivers, Nick Montgomery, and Maurice Tyler.

Zingler became Ireton's season record holder with more than 2,000 yards passing

This Time Clock Runs Out on Flint Hill, 27-24

After a season full of near misses and fourth quarters that felt minutes too short, the Cardinals grabbed a 27-10 lead and held on to win in Alexandria Saturday 27-24.

With the Huskies of Flint Hill badly needing a win to get qualified for the VISFA playoffs and extend their winning streak to 4, Ireton played a gutsy, physical contest on Fannon Field.

The Huskies fumbled the opening kickoff but the Cards promptly lost the ball back to the visitors at midfield.  Flint Hill engineered their first scoring drive of the contest that ended with a Windmuller 17-yard field goal and a 3-0 lead.

Sophomore quarterback PJ Zingler navigated the Cards to their first scoring drive early in the second period, culminating with a 6-yard touchdown toss to Riley Walters. An illegal formation penalty moved the Cardinals back 5 yards and Theo Daubresse missed the PAT, leaving Ireton with a 6-3 advantage.

The defense continued to contain the Huskies, with Eddie Busch, Zane Bush, and Jack Beer bottling up the ground game and pressuring nearly every pass play. Offensively, both Zingler and junior quarterback Andrew Bladen found running room up the middle and Brandon Price-Williams lugged the pigskin effectively for the Cardinals.

Zingler dashed 6 yards for touchdown, then Bladen pounded three yards for a score and suddenly the Cardinals seemed to be pulling away at 20-3. A lightning bolt 54 yard sprint by the Huskies’ Ogundepo pulled Flint Hill to within 20-10, but Zingler again drove the Cardinals down the field, and hit Price-Williams for a 27 yard TD that seemed to salt the game away for the home team as Daubresse’s third PAT gave Ireton a 27-10 final quarter advantage.

Flint Hill wouldn’t throw in the towel however and capped a long drive with a Callaghan 1-yard run. On the next series, Ireton could not sustain a drive, then a near disaster visited the Cardinals as a blocked punt was recovered by Flint Hill on the Ireton 16.  Three plays and a five yard TD pass pulled the Huskies to 27-24 with more than two minutes remaining.

This time, however, the clock was kinder to the Cardinals. After covering an on-side kick, Andrew Bladen battered the Huskies with quarterback runs, and the Cardinal linemen provided the Ireton junior with enough running room to pick up a key first down to run out the clock.

Bishop Ireton (2-7) closes out the 2010 campaign Saturday with the Knights of St Mary Ryken High School. The Senior Day contest will be a 1:30pm kickoff, not 2pm as originally scheduled, while the Flint Hill (4-4) heads to a show down with undefeated Potomac School.  Festivities recognizing the graduating seniors will take place prior to the kickoff.

Scoring:

Flint Hill              3   0   7   14  – 24

Bishop Ireton    0   6   14   7  – 27
