Cardinal Hockey a “Band of Brothers”

It’s not unusual for a younger sibling to follow in the footsteps of an older sibling in the world of youth sports.  In fact, it’s fairly common.  However, what is not as common is the opportunity for them to be able to play together on the same team.  This is especially true in high school sports.

That’s what makes the story of this season’s varsity ice hockey team at Bishop Ireton High School so remarkable.  When the hockey season opens for Ireton, a small Catholic High School located in Alexandria, Virginia, there will be not one but four sets of brothers donning the black jerseys with the bright red Cardinal crest on the front.

From left to right in the photo are Dan Tangora (2011), Nick Tangora (2013), Dillon Roach (2012), Duke Roach (2014), William Chastain (2013), Robert Chastain (2011), Stephen Gerke (2014), and Ben Gerke (2012).  All 8 players, who make up nearly half the squad, also play club hockey for various local organizations including the DC Capitals, Potomac Patriots, Prince William Panthers, and Northern Virginia Ice Dogs.

Bishop Ireton opens the Varsity season next Friday night, November 19th, with a 6:45 pm game against Broad Run at Kettler Capitals Iceplex.  It will be Ireton’s first season with a Varsity squad since the 2006 campaign.
