Falcons outlast Bishop Ireton in boys’ basketball

Freshman Darius Hines (4) led the Cardinals with 12 points in the 58-40 setback to Good Counsel Tuesday.

Freshman Darius Hines (4) led the Cardinals with 12 points in the 58-40 setback to Good Counsel Tuesday.

Freshman Darius Hines had a career night when he scored 12 points, but this was not enough as the Cardinals fell to Good Counsel 58-40.

The Cardinals started fast as the teams exchanged baskets early . A Nick Schmelzer three gave Ireton a 5-3 lead before the Falcons countered with full court pressure and used a 14-2 run to go up 17-7 after one period of play.

The margin ballooned to 29-17 at intermission before the Cardinals whittled the deficit to 33-25.   Good Counsel responded out of a timeout to go on an 8-0 run, eventually building the advantage to 47-27 at the end of the third quarter.

Hines paved the way for the Cardinals, making 50% (4-for-8) of shots attempted while also sinking 100% (4-for-4) of free throws attempted.  Quintin Gilchrest hit double digits, scoring 10 points for the Cardinals (5-for-10). Also helping the effort for the Cardinals were Jeremiah Brooks (8 points, 2 rebounds), Nick Schmelzer (7 points, 1 rebound) and Jamie Pasha (2 points, 5 rebounds).  The Cardinals finished the game with 26 rebounds (eight offensive/18 defensive), one block and one steal.

The team takes a pause this week as semester exams become the focus of players’ attention. Bishop Ireton returns to action on Saturday at St John Paul the Great for a varsity only contest, then the rescheduled visit of the Gonzaga Eagles is slated for Sunday, January 18th at 3pm in Godley Gym.

Bishop Ireton snares City Swim title

photo (1)For the second time in four days, the BI Swim & Dive team brought home a First Place trophy for both the Men’s and Women’s squads at the perennial favorite Tri-City Championship Meet with T.C. Williams and Saint Stephens / Saint Agnes high schools at Chinquapin Recreation Center on January 13, 2015 in Alexandria.

This year’s meet included a very competitive Saint Stephens/Saint Agnes swim and dive team, but the Cardinals out-swam the Saints by a combined 35-point margin of 189 – 154. The combined point spread between the Cardinals and the Titans was 79 with final score of 214 – 135.  Unofficially, 2015 marks the 13th consecutive year that BI has garnered the Tri-City Championship.
First place winners included:
Women’s 200 Medley Relay – Hayley Snell, Anna Shumate, Anna Fracasso and Abigail Grillo
Men’s 200 Free – Michael Morrison

Men’s 200 Individual Medley – Ben Gorski
Women’s 50 Free – Hayley Snell
Women’s 100 Fly – Emma Klein

Women’s 400 Free Relay – Emma Klein, Abigail, Hayley Snell and Anna Shumate
The freshman women divers Kate Wimbush and Kate Murray also placed 4th and 5th in the one meter dive event, respectively.
In this meet, only the top six places in each event count toward the final team scores. Worthy of note are all the individuals and relay teams, in addition to those listed above, who contributed to the total points scored to push the Water Cardinals to the wall to win the meet. The depth of the BI bench was in play with 3rd and 4th teams kicking to finishes that were competitive with, and, in some cases, exceeded the 1st and 2nd team results.

Incredible team spirit was evident as the Cardinals cheered teammates to photo finishes. Also evident was the Cardinal sportsmanship of supporting friends on competing teams in their efforts in the pool.

Sophomore Michael Everett led the Cardinals in scoring on the hardwood and led them as a linebacker on defense in the fall.

Sophomore Michael Everett led the Cardinals in scoring on the hardwood and led them as a linebacker on defense in the fall.

Led by a strong defensive effort and a season high 14 points from sophomore Michael Everett, Bishop Ireton stopped St. Mary’s of Annapolis 48-35 Saturday afternoon at Father Godley Gymnasium.

The Cardinals used a smothering defense early, holding the visiting Saints to only 3 points in the game’s opening period, and never gave the MIAA school much hope of a road win on their visit to Alexandria Saturday.

Bolting to a 10-3 advantage after one, the Cardinals used turnovers and a quick transition game to keep the Saints on their heels while rolling into intermission with a 30-16 advantage.

Nine Cardinals got in the scorebook for Ireton, including junior Jeremiah Brooks with 10 and Nick Schmelzer with 6pm who headed into the game’s final stanza leading 38-23.  Coach Neil Berkman cleared the bench in the fourth and Ireton enjoyed a home win, their first since a December 13th win over Trinity Christian.

Good Counsel visits the Cardinals, who improved to 5-11 on the year, Tuesday at 7:30pm.

Senior CeCe Leone recorded three straight 20+ scoring games and made more than 25 straight free throws over that span of contests.

If back-to-back road games tired the Cardinals, they didn’t show it in a steady performance in a chilly McDonogh School arena Saturday, topping Huntingtown High School of Huntingtown, Maryland, 54-48.

Ireton started fast, breaking from the opening tip to score the game’s first 8 points in racing to a 17-10 first quarter lead. Huntingtown put the brakes on the redbirds in the second, limiting the Alexandrians to only 5 points to trail by just 22-20 at intermission.

The Cardinals once again came out of the locker room on fire, outscoring the public school opponents 17-6 open a large lead before a 22-15 final period narrowed the game’s margin of victory.

For the third consecutive game, senior CeCe Leone again scored more than 20 points, this time a game-high 21, while three-point sniper rode 3 more threes to tally 11 points. Danielle Hatchett and Michelle Montgomery each had five, Shannon Corridon added 4.  Courtney Gray led Huntingtown with 15 points in the loss, Natalie Payne adding 13.

The win improved the Cardinals to 11-7 with yet another road game on the slate as the squad heads to Olney, Maryland and a Tuesday night date with the first place Falcons of Good Counsel. The triple header concludes with a varsity tipoff slated for 7:30pm.

In 2014, Bishop Ireton’s men’s team joined the women as northern Virginia’s Catholic school swim champions.  In 2015, both teams solidified their hold on the titles with convincing wins in the  event. Bishop O’Connell finished second to the Ireton girls, while Paul VI finished second to the Cardinal guys at the Freedom Fitness and Aquatic Center of the George Mason University Manassas campus.

Competing against schools such as Bishop Denis J. O’Connell , Paul VI, Saint John Paul the Great and others, the BI swimmers splashed their way to a first place for the second year running for the Men and the third year for the Women.

The Cardinal Women Divers Kate Wimbush and Kate Murray (both freshmen), kicked off the meet with 4th and 5th places in the one-meter event against three seniors from O’Connell, putting the first points on the scoreboard for Ireton.

Sophomore Anna Shumate broke two meet records with incredible swims in the 50 Free and the 100 breaststroke. The women’s 200 Medley relay team of sophomores Emma Klein and Anna Shumate, junior Anna Fracasso and senior Hayley Snell snagged first place in a breathtaking finish that was a National Catholic qualifying time. Emma Klein also grabbed first place in the 100 Fly with a powerful finish that was a VISSA qualifying time.

The Men’s Most Valuable Swimmer, as voted by all the coaches at the meet, was senior Ben Gorski, with first place swims in the 200 Free and 100 breaststroke as well as his role in the 200 Medley relay’s team first place result (with senior A.J. Salvatori, junior Michael Morrison and senior Ryan Scott, also a National Catholic qualifying time) and the 200 Free relay team’s second place finish (with sophomore Jermaine Thompson, senior Ryan Scott and senior Jimmy Grant, another National Catholic qualifying time).

Michael Morrison took a commanding first place in the 200 IM (and a National Catholic qualifier) and A.J. Salvatori landed a stunning first place in the 100 Back (another National Catholic qualifier).
Along with all these impressive swims was a supporting team of second through fourth team swimmers , all of whom contributed to the winning totals and team spirit at the invitational meet. Sportsmanship was also evident with Ireton swimmers cheering friends from other schools at the meet.

St Mary’s Ryken edges Cardinals 58-47

BIH-156315-25743545The Knights of St Mary’s Ryken suffocating second quarter defense held Bishop Ireton to only 4 points, and that important quarter allowed the visitors to hang on in the second half for a 58-47 WCAC win in Alexandria Friday.

After a competitive first stanza, where the green-jerseyed Knights began to open some space at 19-11, the Leonardtown squad outscored the Cardinals 15-4 in the second frame to build a 34-15 halftime margin.

The third quarter was a struggle for both clubs, each tallying 9 points, but clearly putting the Cardinals in a predictament down 43-24 with 8 minutes to work.  But the Cardinals went after it and, with Nick Schmelzer finding the range from beyond the three-point arc, the home team found themselves closing to 48-40 with 3:05 left in the contest.

It was, however, too much of a deficit with too little time to catch up, and Ryken outscored Bishop Ireton 10-7 down the stretch to secure the win. The Cardinals fell to 4-11, 0-5 in WCAC play with non conference St Mary’s of Annapolis visiting Alexandria on Saturday afternoon.

Bishop Ireton splits pair of WCAC road games

BIH-155974-25687795It had been 15 years since the Cardinals had topped one of the WCAC’s marquee programs, and after falling behind 10-0 early, there was little reason for hope that would change on a frigid night in Kensington.

But, Coach Jason Harris, got a time out and regrouped. By the end of one quarter, the margin was cut to 15-10. By halftime, the Tartans held a 34-28 advantage, but a big second half effort was bursting out of the visitors’ locker room.

The Cardinals outscored Holy Cross 13-7 to tie the game at 41-41 as the teams started the final quarter of play. Ireton quickly grabbed their first lead on a 5-2 run in the first two minutes of play to go ahead 46-43.  Ireton was on a roll, one that would see them outscore the home team 20-6 in the 4th quarter to pull away to the 61-50 upset win.

The victory pushed them to 10-6 on the season, 2-4 in the WCAC.  It was the first win over Holy Cross since a 58-52 win during the 1999-2000 season, only the third time in the series the Cardinals had topped Holy Cross.  Once again, seniors CeCe Leone had a big night, with a game-high 22 points, Alex Stipano added three more 3-pointers to her total, scoring 15,  while Danielle Hatchett scored 11. The three recorded an unbelievable 13 for 13 from the free throw line, the Cardinals overall shot a stunning 22 of 24 from the stripe! For Leone, it extended her streak of consecutive free throws made to at least 25 in a row and 29 of her last 30!

Friday saw the girls back on the bus for a trek to Leonardtown and the cramped Ryken school gym.  Fresh off a win over Holy Cross, the Cardinals tangled with the high scoring Knights sitting at 3-2 in WCAC play.

The game was played at a fast pace, Ryken owning a narrow 15-13 lead after one, then pulled away in the second quarter to gain an 8-point bulge at the halfway mark of the contest, 33-25.

Ryken continued to build on the advantage and closed the third period with 55-41 lead over the visiting Cardinals.  Ireton didn’t quit, the pace didn’t slacken and the teams combined for 39 points in the 4th, giving the Knights the 75-60 margin of victory.

CeCe Leone continued to score at torrid pace, once again scoring 22 points for Ireton, while Michelle Montgomery contributed 11 and Stipano 10. Bianca Boggs had a game-high 23 to lead St Mary’s Ryken.

Bishop Ireton stays on the road, heading to Owings Mills and a Saturday matchup with Huntingtown High School in the McDonogh School’s Public-Private Challenge.  Tip off is 2pm.

Cardinal girls fall to SJC, blast TCS in hoops in weekend action

BIH-155974-25687904Bishop Ireton had a busy weekend of hoops, falling to WCAC powerhouse, St Johns 63-46 then overwhelming Trinity Christian School 85-20 the next day.

The Cardinals are a much improved basketball team, but there are still nights where talented WCAC squads make it tough on the redbirds. Friday was one of those evenings, as the Cadets bolted out to a 20-8 lead after a quarter of play and didn’t look back, enroute to the win.

Michelle Montgomery battled inside for Bishop Ireton and recorded a team-high 15 points while CeCe Leone added 14 including another perfect 4-4 night from the free throw line. Stipano added seven, Aiden Phillips and Paige Russell had 4, Shannon Corridon and Danielle Hatchett chipped in two each.  Amira Collins had a game-high 18 points, two other Cadets scored in double figures.

Saturday the tables turned and this time, it was the visiting Trinity Christian School that had their hands full with the Cardinals. As the clubs headed to intermission, Ireton was cruising at 47-14 and Coach Jason Harris substituted liberally and often. 12 Cardinals scored in the contest, Alex Stipano’s 15 lead Ireton, Leone and Hatchett scored 10, juniors Shannon Corridon and Maggie Lohrer had 9, Paige Russell added 8, Montgomery 7.  It was among the most lopsided wins in school history and gave Ireton its 9th win against 6 losses. A pair of WCAC games loom for Ireton before a non conference tilt in the Public-Private tournament at Mcdonough School on Saturday, January 10th.
