Football Alum’s unbelievable play is an ESPN hightlight

Sacred Heart's Moses Webb (24), seen here in action for the Cardinals 2 years ago against the Wolves of John Paul the Great. Webb, a sophomore wide receiver for the Pioneers, graduated in 2012 from Bishop Ireton. His spectacular hustle play on Saturday turned a mistake into a touchdown, and earned him an interview on ESPN!

Sacred Heart’s Moses Webb, Bishop Ireton class of 2012, made one of college football’s most unusual plays on Saturday against Monmouth  and the video of the play soon went viral,  earning the former Cardinal an interview on ESPN.

Webb, a standout wide receiver for the Fairfield, Connecticut, Division I Pioneers of the Northeast Conference, had just hauled in a pass and was running down field when the wild play unfolded.

Webb was stripped of the football from behind and fumbled. A Monmouth defender scooped up the loose ball and began to return it toward the Sacred Heart end zone. Webb, immediately joined the pursuit, knocked the pigskin loose from the Monmouth player and picked the ball up.  He, in turn, reversed quickly in the direction of the Monmouth goal line.  Using the speed that made him one of Bishop Ireton’s top sprinters, he raced untouched into the end zone for a Pioneer fumble recovery touchdown on the bizarre play that started with him catching a pass.

The catch was Webb’s only reception of the day, it went for 36 yards.  He was also credited with an assist on a tackle, a caused fumble, and 51 yard fumble return for a touchdown. Sacred Heart held on to defeat Monmouth 24-21.

Stephanie Cabrera named 2d team all conference as WCAC volleyball season concludes

Sisters Stephanie (left) and Ashley (right) Cabrera have been two of Ireton's strongest performers. Stephanie earned 2d team all conference honors while Ashley's senior campaign was slowed by injury.

Junior Stephanie Cabrera was Bishop Ireton’s lone selectee to the WCAC second team in all conference balloting for volleyball it was announced this week. Cabrera ended her season with a team and WCAC-high 268 kills, good for 5th in the area overall, according to the Washington Post.  She also recorded 276 digs, good for a 16th best in the metro area.

The 5th seeded Cardinals ended their conference schedule with a pair of setbacks, to top ranked Holy Cross 3-0 on Senior Day at Bishop Ireton, then fell in three on the road to fourth-seeded St Johns in the opening round of the WCAC playoffs.

The Conference honorably mentioned three Ireton seniors, Brittany Fisher, Shanna Burns, and Rayghan Larick for their play with the Cardinals this fall.

Bishop Ireton concluded the campaign with a respectable 17-14 mark overall, 7-9 in the always challenging WCAC.   The season saw the team garner a pair of runner-up second place finishes in tournaments in Virginia and battle injuries to a number of starters that made tough schedule more difficult.

VISAA final polling for state playoff seeding will be conducted this weekend, Nov 2, 3.  Top eight teams in Division I qualify, the redbirds sit on the bubble at number 9 going into the season’s final state rankings.

Girls “Dorsey’ed” in Semi-final Soccer setback

Senior Capri Puglise, one of nine graduating seniorswho played their final game at Good Counsel Thursday.

Good Counsel’s Nia and Imani Dorsey scored a first half goals in Good Counsel’s dominating 3-0 win over Bishop Ireton in Olney on Thursday.

For the Cardinals, (10-4-3) the loss ends an otherwise strong performance by Coach Gino Leon’s team.   The squad played a strong schedule, opening at the McDonogh Mid Atlantic Tournament and finishing two months later in a Conference semifinal with the area’s top ranked girls soccer program.

Thursday, however, it was all Falcons.  Nia Dorsey staked the h0me team to an early lead in the game’s 8th minute from a sharp angle to keeper Amy Krotine’s left. A quick pass and quicker release put Good Counsel up 1-0.   The Falcons controlled possession and forced Ireton to play large stretches of the opening half in their own end.  Krotine kept the black-shirted visitors in the game with exceptional goalkeeping, but a direct kick awarded to senior WCAC player of the year, Imani Dorsey,  spelled trouble for the Cardinals. Dorsey demonstrated why she was recognized as the league’s top performer when she sent a perfectly placed blast into the top far corner of goal beyond the reach of Krotine, and probably any keeper around.  The second goal, in the 40th minute of play was a deflating development as the teams retired to intermission.

The second half started in a somewhat ragged manner, but the rapid turnovers by both squads did provide Ireton with improved field position and the Cardinals manufactured some quality shots as the final half unfolded.  Sophomore Lilly Weber had Ireton’s best chance to that point when she hit a line drive from the keeper’s left that rolled just past the far post for a goal kick. But, though the fourth-seeded Cardinals had more offensive play in the second half, they couldn’t convert.  That increased pressure came at a cost, and the redbirds paid the bill in the game’s 76th minute.

A pair of long lead passes put the Falcons on a two on two break and as they attacked Krotine made a diving save, but the rebound went directly to Good Counsel’s Dana Reed who knocked the loose ball into an open net and the 3-0 final.

“Good Counsel is a very good team. They came out and dictated the style of play and we seemed to accept that.  It  isn’t our style and you could see we had trouble. But that’s what makes them a good team, they made us play their way.” commented a disappointed head coach, Gino Leon.

Good Counsel (11-1-5) the top seed in the tournament will host second seeded Bishop O’Connell (13-2-1) Saturday evening at 6pm when they collide at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown.  The teams tied, 2-2 in their regular season meeting.
