Young Cardinals Top Frosh Stags, 10-1

Ireton's freshmen-laden JV found success visiting the DeMatha freshmen Tuesday in Hyattsville.

The Bishop Ireton JV Men’s Lacrosse team traveled to Hyattesville, MD to face the DeMatha Stags on an overcast day at Heurich Field.  The Cardinals brightened their day by playing team lacrosse and earning a 10-1 road victory.

The Cardinal Offense scored first when Freshman Attackman Devon Reed fed Sophomore Attack John Kelly on the crease at 7:27 in the first quarter.  Soph Midfielder Andrew Grabowski won the ensuing faceoff.  Reed & Kelly teamed up again for a 2-0 lead less than 40 seconds later.  The Defense did not allow the Stags a shot during their next two possessions.  Reed added a solo goal from the right wing at 4:44.  Reed then fed a cutting Soph Attack Jimmy Grant on the crease at 2:08.  Grabowski added a solo goal with 4 seconds left in the quarter to take a 5-0 lead.

In the 2nd quarter, the Defense did not allow a DeMatha shot during their first three possessions.  Long poles Louie Galdos, Harrison Mertins, Travis Lake, Patrick Gallager, Joey Siedlarz, Ryan Lucas, Trey Lovisone and Robert McCormick consistently caused turnovers, scooped ground balls and cleared effectively.  At 7:57 Soph Middie Jack Murphy fed Frosh Mid Cristian Vasquez cutting into the crease for a 6-0 lead.  The Stags scooped a loose ball on the BI crease during unsettled play for their only goal at 6:25.  Twenty seconds later, Reed fed Frosh Attack Tony Caffi on the left wing for a 7-1 lead at the half.

The Cardinals limited DM to 3 shots in the 3rd quarter.  Reed added solo goals at 4:40 and 1:56, then  fed Grant at 1:13 for the final BI goal.  The Cardinals had scoring opportunities in the 4th quarter, including two pipes, but could not convert.  BI’s defense held the Stags to three shots in the 4th quarter. Frosh Goalie Ryan Verducci recorded 5 saves to ensure the win.
