On the heels of an emotional win over cross town rival, St Stephens, the Cardinals played two games in as many days and survived one while romping in the other.
The Potomac School visited Father Godley Gym Friday night, and after falling behind 18-10 early, roared back to lead most of the contest, including a 8-point advantage into the game’s final quarter. It was a game of runs, the Cardinals had 18 points in the first quarter, but managed only three in the second, trailing 32-21 after holding an 18-15 first quarter lead.
Ireton shaved 3 points off the lead in the third quarter, but still looked to have a tall order ahead of them as the game moved into the final period. The fans will long remember that junior Dan Noe hit a 10 foot jumper to give Ireton the 49-47 win with 1.6 left on the clock but Coach Neil Berkman will look to the ball club playing its best defense of the evening in the final stanza when the Panthers could muster only 4 points to counter the 14 Ireton would hang on the scoreboard. It was that defense and determined work in the offensive zone that willed the home team to the win.
Ireton missed a pair of shots as the clock headed to zeros in the Cardinals’ final possession, game tied at 47. With the ball out of bounds to Ireton with 6 seconds remaining, the inbound pass moved from player to player until Noe took the pass and launched the turnaround jumper from the lane. Before the Panthers could inbound the ball the horned signed the end.
Patrick Moseh again led Ireton in scoring with 15 points, Louie Khouri added 9 and Taylor McHugh had 7. Logan Samuels led Potomac with 15 points. The Panthers had a good night from the field, hitting more than 50% of their shots from the field and making all their free throws, while the Cardinals could convert on only three quarters of their free throws and less than 40% from the f ield.
Saturday’s contest with St Andrews Episcopal of the MAC was a rebound from the night before. Coming off a tough win against a relatively unknown opponent sporting a 5-1 record, Ireton played as if shot from a cannon. As St Andrews struggled to get shots to fall, everything the Cardinals shot when in as they raced away to a 20-0 start. It was a 27-6 advantage after one period, 48-25 at intermission. Both teams were running and gunning after that enroute to an 84-67 win to give Bishop Ireton a 5-0 mark heading into WCAC Tuesday. Dan Noe’s 18 points led the Cardinals in scoring, Patrick Moseh had 17, Louie Khouri 14, and Davon Wiley had 11 to lead the winners. Marcus Adkinson pitched in a game high 27 for St Andrews while teammate Cedric McFadden added 24 for the Lions.
