Boys hoops wins a buzzer beater, blowout to move to 5-0

Junior Dan Noe hit the gamewinner to beat Potomac School, 49-47 on Friday night.

On the heels of an emotional win over cross town rival, St Stephens, the Cardinals played two games in as many days and survived one while romping in the other.

The Potomac School visited Father Godley Gym Friday night, and after falling behind 18-10 early, roared back to lead most of the contest, including a 8-point advantage into the game’s final quarter.  It was a game of runs, the Cardinals had 18 points in the first quarter, but managed only three in the second, trailing 32-21 after holding an 18-15 first quarter lead.

Ireton shaved 3 points off the lead in the third quarter, but still looked to have a tall order ahead of them as the game moved into the final period.  The fans will long remember that junior Dan Noe hit a 10 foot jumper to give Ireton the 49-47 win with 1.6 left on the clock but Coach Neil Berkman will look to the ball club playing its best defense of the evening in the final stanza when the Panthers could muster only 4 points to counter the 14 Ireton would hang on the scoreboard.  It was that defense and determined work in the offensive zone that willed the home team to the win.

Ireton missed a pair of shots as the clock headed to zeros in the Cardinals’ final possession, game tied at 47.  With the ball out of bounds to Ireton with 6 seconds remaining, the inbound pass moved from player to player until Noe took the pass and launched the turnaround jumper from the lane.  Before the Panthers could inbound the ball the horned signed the end.

Patrick Moseh again led Ireton in scoring with 15 points, Louie Khouri added 9 and Taylor McHugh had 7.  Logan Samuels led Potomac with 15 points.  The Panthers had a good night from the field, hitting more than 50% of their shots from the field and making all their free throws, while the Cardinals could convert on only three quarters of their free throws and less than 40% from the f ield.

Saturday’s contest with St Andrews Episcopal of the MAC was a rebound from the night before.  Coming off a tough win against a relatively unknown opponent sporting a 5-1 record, Ireton played as if shot from a cannon. As St Andrews struggled to get shots to fall, everything the Cardinals shot when in as they raced away to a 20-0 start.  It was a 27-6 advantage after one period, 48-25 at intermission.   Both teams were running and gunning after that enroute to an 84-67 win to give Bishop Ireton a 5-0 mark heading into WCAC Tuesday. Dan Noe’s 18 points led the Cardinals in scoring, Patrick Moseh had 17, Louie Khouri 14, and Davon Wiley had 11 to lead the winners.   Marcus Adkinson pitched in a game high 27 for St Andrews while teammate Cedric McFadden  added 24 for the Lions.

The Cardinals travel to Fairfax to challenge the defending champs, already stinging from an upset loss to Gonzaga in their season opener. The Panthers are riding high now after topping MaxPreps top ranked Oak Hill Academy in double overtime Sunday.   Gametime in Fairfax is 4pm for freshmen, 5:45 for the junior varsity and 7:30 for the main event! Admission is $5.

Girls Hoops Improve to 4-0 with 50-26 blistering of Wilson

Senior Taylor Gallahan has provided a physical presence for the Cardinals in the paint in the early stages of the 2012-13 season.

After a tight first half with Bishop Ireton clinging to a 23-17 advantage, the Cardinals tied the screws down defensively to pull away to a 24-point win on the road Thursday in Washington 50-26.

Things got off to a rocky start for the Cardinals. The Tigers blew out to a 10-0 lead in the game’s opening minutes before Bishop Ireton got up off the canvass and began fighting back.  Mara Celis-Copelloti hit the first two of  her game high 18 points to start a 12-0 Ireton run that gave them a slim lead after one quarter.  Slowly the Cardinals worked the lead larger with free throws and a stiffening defense.

Wilson scored the f irst 4 points of the second half to draw to 23-21 before Celis-Copelotti hit a jumper and senior Camille Weber drained a three pointer to get the visitors some breathing room.  Celis-Copelotti made a pair of “3 balls”  and suddenly the lead ballooned to 37-23. Issabelle Kendall drilled a 3 to open the final period and the rout was on. Kendall scored again on a jump shot the Cardinals rode home with their 4th win of the season.

The Cardinals shot a season high 40% from the field, including 54% of their three point attempts while holding Wilson to 34% shooting.  Julia O’Brien, Taylor Gallahan,  and Weber added 6 a piece for Ireton, while Kendall had 5, Heather Pearson 3, and Alex Stipano and Illeanna Gutierrez each had a free throw in the book.

The defense was the story as much as the offense, Ireton held the Tigers to 9 second half points, including 3 in the game’s final quarter.  Suarez led the host Tigers with 12 points for the evening.

Bishop Ireton continues a busy weekend with yet another road trip to Georgetown Visitation, a tough spot for the Cardinals over the last few years. After visiting the Cubs, the team hosts Bishop Sullivan in their home opener Saturday, tipoff set for 2:30pm in Fr Godley Gym.

Third quarter eruption leads to win in season opener, 72-53

Junior Taylor McHugh had a career high 18 points in win over Episcopal Saturday.

A 26-point advantage in the third quarter, thanks to a 27-5 run, buried Episcopal in their home opener Saturday afternoon and sent Bishop Ireton to a 72-53 win.  Junior Taylor McHugh had a career scoring day for the redbirds, dropping 18 on the Maroon while classmate Dan Noe added 16 and sophomore Patrick Moseh added 12.

“It was a good opener for us. We have a lot of weapons.” said the Cardinals head coach, Neil Berkman.  “This is a quality opponent, no question. Two legitimate division one players on that team, as you could tell by the 17-3 run they made after getting down by 26.  I am very happy with the game, beating a team like Episcopal in their building.”

Ireton opened the contest with a smothering full court press and utilized the havoc to jump out to a 6-0 lead before the host squad steadied their game.  Methodically Episcopal worked back into the game, grabbing a narrow lead, then falling back as the quicker Cardinals harried them unending on the offensive end of the floor. The visitors owned a 17-13 advantage at the end of one quarter and would go to the locker room with a 33-28 halftime lead.

Senior Louie Khouri and Taylor McHugh led an avalanche of three point baskets, 4 in all, during a 26-point third period where the Cambridge Road crew had their best effort going hard to the basket and shooting at a deadly clip from the field, burying the home team by 59-33 after three quarters.  Ireton substituted liberally in the game’s final quarter and coasted to the win.  Bishop Ireton shot 43% from the field for the ballgame and 65% from the free throw line.

For the home team Maroon, freshman Doug Chappell was the game’s high scorer with 22 points while teammate Greg Malinowski rode 4 three-pointers to add 18 points in a losing effort.

Next up for the Cardinals is Fairfax High School on Monday, December 3rd in Fairfax. The varsity tipoff is 7:30pm.

Cheerleaders grab Mid-Atlantic Region cheer title

A very young team that hit their routine perfectly according to Coach Angela Hope-Eskew.

Coach Angela Hope’s cheerleaders have earned a well deserved reputation in the Mid-Atlantic area as one of high school’s best cheer squads. Teams eye the Cardinals closely when they enter the stage. With good reason.

The team opened the competitive portion of their year with the Mid-Atlantic Region competition held in Richmond Saturday before a strong crowd of Cardinal supporters.  They didn’t disappoint with another regional championship, their third title in 4 years.

“The competition was tough, but cheerleaders really brought their A game and they hit their routine! We had awesome parent support in the crowd and with 13 new freshman on the team, it was a very exciting win for us” said Coach Hope-Eskew.

With the win, the squad is qualified for the Christian Cheerleading Association’s national championship competition in  North Carolina in March.  For now, the girls return to spirit activities with the School’s first basketball game scheduled for Wednesday versus St Stephens.

Ice Hockey falls to Freedom late, loses at Briar Wood

Heading into the Thanksgiving break, the Bishop Ireton Varsity Hockey team took on the Freedom Eagles in the first of two consecutive Sunday evening games at the Ashburn Ice House. The Eagles scored first, taking a 1-0 lead 5 minutes into the game, but the Cardinals answered less than 2 minutes later on a goal by Phillip Thomas, his 3rd of the season, assisted by Ryan Scott. The teams traded chances for the rest of the period but neither was able to jump in front until Duke Roach picked up his 3rd goal of the season with under a minute to play, assisted by Joe Gorman and Ryan Scott.

After Freedom scored early in the second period to tie the score at 2-2, the Ireton offense responded quickly to retake the lead. Goalie Michaela Mulokey started the scoring play with a pass to Duke Roach who sent Stephen Gerke up the middle on a breakaway, netting his 3rd goal of the season. The Cardinals were unable to protect the lead however, with the Eagles scoring 2 quick goals to retake the lead at 4-3. Just when it appeared that the second period would end that way, Ryan Scott scored with just 7 seconds remaining in the frame to tie the game at 4-4, assisted by Nick Tangora.

Looking to capitalize on the momentum of that late goal, the Cardinals did just that in the opening seconds of the final period. Nick Tangora, the Captain of this year’s squad, picked up his 1st goal of the season on a feed from Jordan Zelasko just 18 seconds in. Not to be outdone, Freedom added a goal 3 minutes later to knot the game at 5-5. The teams would trade scoring chances for most of the rest of the period but neither team was able to capitalize. Just when it looked like the game might end in a tie, the Cardinals found themselves in deep penalty trouble with just over 2 minutes remaining. The Eagles wasted no time, scoring a pair of power play goals 17 seconds apart to seal the win, 7-5.

Ryan Scott led the scoring with 3 points (1 G, 2 A), followed by Duke Roach and Nick Tangora with 2 (1 G, 1 A) each. Phillip Thomas (1 G), Stephen Gerke (1 G), Joe Gorman (1 A), Michaela Mulokey (1 A) and Jordan Zelasko (1 A) rounded out the scoring.

The NVSHL season resumed last night with an 8:00 pm date with Briar Woods at the Ashburn Ice House. The Cardinal squad was no match for the powerful Falcon team, losing 11-1 and dropping to 1-3 in league play. The lone Cardinal goal was scored by Duke Roach, his 4th of the season, assisted by Joe Gorman.

The Ireton Varsity Hockey team resumes play this Friday night with a non-league game against St. Alban’s at the Ft. Dupont Ice Arena at 8:00 pm. Their league schedule resumes next week with 3 tough NVSHL games against Woodbridge, Osbourn Park and Bishop O’Connell.

Girls Snare 12th Saints Tip Off Title 59-54

2012 Cardinals pose after outlasting host St Stephens for 59-54 championship win.

Led by tourney MVP, senior Camille Weber’s 20-point night powered Bishop Ireton to its 12th Tip Off tournament title, 59-54 over the host St Stephens.  The Cardinals edged Norfolk Academy Friday night to advance to the championship game while the Saints walloped Episcopal 46-23.

The championship was a tightly played affair, with more than its share of fouls, as the backyard rivalry seesawed back and forth through the first half. The Cardinals led early through the first period, St Stephens edged ahead and nursed a 27-24 advantage into the halftime intermission.

Coach Derek Campbell’s halftime adjustments seemed to be just what the Cardinals needed as they scored 26 points in the third period alone to grab a big lead, only to see some questionable clock management by the visitors and determined offense by the Saints narrow the lead to as few as three points as the 4th quarter seemingly crawled to its conclusion for the Cardinal faithful.  It wasn’t until senior Heather Pearson drained a pair of free throws with seconds left in the contest that the Ireton crowd could breath easier.

Senior Mara Celis-Copelotti sidelined with an ankle injury may have left the Cardinals short handed but Weber almost singlehandedly directed the Cardinals throughout the game. She was joined by sophomore Alex Stipano on the all tourney team, and Stipano’s 11 points were important. Senior Julia O’Brien led Ireton on the boards and inside game added 9 points for the Cardinals.   Another sophomore, Illeanna Gutierrez, proved to be a strong ball handler for the team and her 2 three-point hoops came at critical points in the second half.

The Saints wouldn’t go away, led by the play of Priscilla Badu-Sekyere, who seemed to be endlessly at the charity stripe and ended with 10 points, while teammates Kendall Taylor and Lizzie Zulauf plagued the Ireton defense with 11 points each.  The Ireton win avenges the Saints thrilling win over the Cardinals last year when they took home the championship plaque.

Next up for the Cardinals (2-0) is a trip to Flint Hill for the always dangerous Huskies in Oakton on Tuesday, Dec 4th. Gametime is 6pm for the varsity tilt.

Cards Outlast Norfolk Academy 42-32, move to Saints’ title game

Senior Camille Weber's 12 points were game high total in Cardinals' season opening win over Norfolk Academy Firday.

Coach Derek Campbell won his third straight season opener, all at the St Stephens/St Agnes Tip Off Tournament, 42-32 over Norfolk Academy in a foul-filled contest. “You are happy to get the first win, no doubt about that.” said the Ireton skipper following the game, “But we have some things to talk about with the girls.”

Senior guard Camille Weber led the redbirds with 12 points, Alex Stipano added 10. Tyler Moore led the visiting Bulldogs with 8 points while Meredith Bunch added 7 in their season opener.

The teams struggled offensively as Ireton threw an aggressive full court pressure at the Bulldogs to start the game while the Cardinals opened quickly against a zone defense of Norfolk Academy.   Bishop Ireton  sooned went cold from the field for stretches, however, and the Tidewater school gamely stayed within striking distance.  After breaking to a 13-8 first period advantage, the teams battled evenly through the second quarter and Bishop Ireton went to the locker room with a 24-19 margin.

Ireton would extend the advantage to 34-27 after three periods despite a flood of personal fouls that forced Campbell to go deep into his bench. Luckily for the Cardinals, the ‘dogs would shoot only 31% from the field and 36% from charity stripe.  Ireton could muster 27% from the field, but dominated the glass for many second chance shots and did shoot 53% from the fire throw line.

The teams combined for 41 fouls, Ireton whistled for 22 while Norfolk Academy collected 19. Nonetheless, Ireton moves on to meet the winner of the St Stephens/St Agnes versus Episcopal game in the nightcap of the two-day tournament. Championship action tips off approximiately 5pm following the 3pm consolation game at St Stephens.
