Falcons outlast Cardinals in girls lax, 12-8

Sophomore Olivia Cole had 11 saves in a hard fought 12-8 Ireton setback to Good Counsel Tuesday.

After a disappointing loss to Georgetown Visitation, Falcons’ Coach Mike Haight suggested he didn’t know which team would show up on Tuesday at Bishop Ireton’s Fannon Field, the one that was thoroughly outplayed by the Cubs or the 7-time defending WCAC champions.  18 minutes into the game, it appeared he has his answer as sophomores Paige Graham and Haley Giraldi each tallied twice to lead Good Counsel to a 6-1 lead in the opening half of play.

“We are closing the gap, we will play better.” said a disappointed head coach, Rick Sofield. The Cardinals, down 7-3 at the intermission, did play better in the second half as seniors Ellie Marrin and Maddie Zeigler scored 50 seconds apart during the 7th minute of action to close the lead to 7-5.  Ireton’s defense kept Good Counsel off the scoreboard until Giraldi scored her third of four on the day with 15:35 remaining to extend the Falcon lead to 8-5.

Alyssa Chalk scored her second goal with 10:15 remaining to push the Good Counsel advantage to 4, but Zeigler tallied twice on assists from freshmen Charlotte Sofield and Kelly Mathews to again close Ireton to within a pair at 9-7.  Olivia Cole, who otherwise had a strong performance in the net for Ireton with 11 saves, suffered the misfortune of making a key save only to see the ball come out of her stick on the clear and into her goal.  Senior Margaret Nealon responded with a goal for the Cardinals and it was a two goal game again with 5:32 to play.

Shea Cassidy scored for the Falcons on a free position with 2:51 to play and Giraldi’s final marker of the day at 1:46 left removed any doubt on the contest’s outcome.

For the Cardinals(6-4, 3-1), it was their first loss in the WCAC after three wins, the Falcons (4-2, 3-0) notched their third win without a defeat in the WCAC. Next up for the Cardinals is a date with a traditionally difficult opponent, St Anne’s Bellfield, on Fannon Field Tuesday, Apr 10th. The road will get only harder as one of the Midwest’s premier teams, Loyola Academy, from suburban Chicago “hosts” the Cardinals on their east coast road trip at Georgetown University. Gametime on Friday is 10:45am.

Rowers rally to retain Cindy Cole Cup

A blistering pace in the second half of the race propelled the Ireton girls past O'Connell Saturday.

Last week the men’s varsity made the rowing exciting, this past Saturday the Lady Cardinals made the highlight reels.  The ever-expanding  2012 Cindy Cole Cup regatta featured 11 area schools competing on the Anacostia River on Saturday, March 31.  The Bishop’s Cup, a dual match between Bishop Ireton and Bishop O’Connell, was held simultaneously.

Down much of the race to Bishop O’Connell, the Ireton ladies  Varsity 8  made a move at the beginning of the last 500 m stretch to pull even and then continued to motor through for a full length win.  The second varsity 8 won when the team from Montgomery Blair HS  cut across the bow of the Ireton 8 near the finish line andwas disqualified.  The ladies’ Novice 8 continued it’s winning ways as well.  The surprising men’s Novice 4 won again.

Based on the points from the order of finishes, the Bishop Ireton team retained the Cindy Cole Men’s, Women’s, and combined Team trophies for the third straight year.  The result of the Bishop’s Cup was a tight 4-3 in favor of the Cardinals.  “Itwas satisfying retaining all four of the cups but we will definitely be lookingto build on all the 2nd place finishes we had.  I am very proud of the girls’varsity 8 and their first place finish that sealed the Bishop’s Cup for us” said head coach Eric Gehrke.

The team will enter spring break training next week and will end it with a trip to the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia to compete in the 4th Manny Flick /Horvat series regatta. “The team is in good early season form. Now we must continue toimprove as we head into the faster races of our season in Philadelphia and on the Occoquan”  said the coach.  Results can be found on the web at www.Row2k.com/results.

Cardinals Soar Past Tartans, 22-5, edged by Mustangs, 5-4

The lady Cardinals used 19 hits to crush Holy Cross 22-5 in a slaughter rule shortened game on Wednesday. The win evens their record to 4-4
on the year.  Ireton batted the entire order in both the first and second innings taking an 8-0 lead.  Holy Cross came back with 4 of their own in the second off a walk, a hit batsman and a long triple.  Ireton then blew the game open, scoring 6 more in the third and fourth innings.

Senior Catcher Debbie Ward went 4 for 4, including a home run, on her way to generating 3 RBI’s.  Battery mate Micki Crouch went 4 innings, before yielding to sophomore Katie Milam, striking out 5 and yielding only 4 hits.  Junior Emily Quinn continues to swing the hot bat, going 3 for 3 and boosting her batting average to .462.

Bishop McNamara, a 2011 WCAC finalist, proved to be a much more challenging opponent on Friday.  The redbirds lost a tough game at Luckett Field
against Bishop McNamara, 5-4.  The Cardinals took a 3-0 lead into the 4th inning, but the Mustangs rallied with 4 runs in the 4th and added another in the fifth to go ahead 5-3.  The Cardinal’s waged a furious comeback but came up short.

Junior Emily Quinn got things started in the second as she legged out a long hit into a home run scoring Debbi Ward to make the score 2-0.  A pair of Mustang errors allowed Katie Kiesner to score in the 3rd bumping the lead to 3-0.  With 2 outs in the 4th inning, McNamara scored 4 runs, 3 off an error in the outfield.  A double and a triple for the Mustangs added an important insurance run in the 5th inning.

Ireton came back strong with a lead off home run in the bottom half of the inning by Micki Crouch.  The attack resumed in the 6th inning with back to back
singles by Emily Quinn and Kathleen Walsh.  A passed ball allowed both of them to move up, giving the Cardinals runners on second and third with no one out.  All three of the next batters put the ball in play, but timely defense by the Mustangs nailed two runners at the plate and induced an easy pop up.

Micki Crouch returned to the pitching circle for the 7th inning and stranded a pair of runners on her way to striking out her 12th batter of the day.  The Ireton attack resumed in the bottom of the 7th.  With the meat of the order up with one out, Heather Pearson singled and worked her way over to 3rd base on a
Debbie Ward fielder’s choice and a passed ball.  After scorching a line drive just foul, Megan Sullivan flied out to center field to end the game.

Ireton will hope to bounce back at Good Counsel on Monday.  They visit O’Connell Wednesday before departing to Myrtle Beach for a Spring Break tournament.

Godley Gym floor maintenance continues

Crews have spent days rough sanding the floor to remove paint and finish as well as the "cupping" of the boards. Painting and finish will be applied over the Easter break.

8 years after the School installed the current gym floor, Bishop Ireton and the athletic booster club are working on the second phase of the modernization of the facility. Last year, the partnership produced air conditioning for the gymnasium after more than 45 years of hot, humid summer weather and dry, colder winter weather. Those climate swings caused swelling and contracting on the floor that led to “cupping” of the maplewood boards.  Combined with the near constant use of the gym, the wear and tear on the floor sped the need for its 10-year refinishing.

“We will sand the floor down to bare wood.” said athletic director Bill Simmons. “Then we repaint the lines and refinish the entire floor. Hopefully we will be completed about a week before the School’s annual auction, scheduled for April 21st.  “The humidity would cause swelling of the wood in the spring and summer, then the drier winter air caused them to contract. We seem to schedule the gym 24/7, so we really need to stay on top of the maintenance. This current effort is a once in ten years evolution.  We will replace the windows, get a fresh coat of paint, and eventually replace the bleachers as part of the long range plan for the gym.”
The first part of the project involved sanding the floor down to the bare wood. Soon repainting of the lines on the floor will occur, finally the finish will be reapplied. The entire process takes nearly 30 days. Finding that sort of time is nearly impossible, according to Simmons, so using the Easter break was a key component of the timing.  Summer camps, crowded maintenance schedules for floor companies, then the onset of fall sports in August made a summer project impractical. The unseasonably warm, dry spring has softened the impact on the physical education department, a major user, but also the group bearing the brunt of the displacement by the work.
This phase of the program was funded jointly by the School and the athletic booster club.  “They are so important to our ability to do many things in athletics, I can’t thank them enough or over emphasize the importance of their contributions.” said Simmons.  Weyer Floor Service of Odenten, Maryland, the original installer of the floor is the contracted service provider for the Ireton project.
