Indoor track heads to VISAA meet poised for success

Ireton's indoor season will put many top competitors a step ahead early in the outdoor season.

The final meets of the year are favorable to the BI indoor track team.  They are often smaller and include mostly private school competition.  This was the case at last Saturdays private school invite held at Georgetown Prep.  Almost every performance was a personal best, and included many exciting races where BI runners competed against each other.

On the boys side Albert Schibani broke the indoor school record in the 300, running a personal best of 38.88.  In the race he just barely edged out Tavon Smith, the previous holder of the record set earlier this season.  Tavon’s time was 38.99.  Brandon Price also competed in he 300.  His time was 39.22, followed by freshman John Holbrook ( 43.94).

Minutes earlier the girls team had a very similar finish.  Junior standout Nicole Bond lined up two lanes away from Sophomore Ricca Graham.  This race was proof that should always run your hardest against the clock as well as your competition.  Ricca’s time of 43.30 is 1/100 of a second faster than Colleen McFadden’s school record of 43.31, run almost exactly four years ago to the day.  In the race she bested her friend and teammate, as well as move into fourth place overall.  Bond finished fifth in 44.33.  She also finished 11th in the 55meters.  In the 1000 meter race freshman, Isela Vasquez, continued to improve as a competitor with enormous promise.  Her time of 3:47.60 placed her sixteenth overall, and was the third best time among her freshman peer group.

The team will travel to Richmond this Saturday to compete in the VISAA championships.
