Football Team Celebrates Record Successes at Post Season Banquet

2011 Ireton football set a number of team records enroute to an 8-3 season.

On December 6, 2011 the coaches, players, and family members of the 2011 Bishop Ireton Varsity Football Team gathered to celebrate the team’s great success and return to the Virginia Independent School Football Association (VISFA) Playoffs.  More than 150 shared a wonderful meal at the Fort Belvoir Officer’s Club as Coach Tony Verducci and his staff presented varsity letters and recognized the superior performances and contributions of several players before saying farewell to a talented group of twenty-three seniors who completed their time as Cardinal football players.

The team, which achieved an overall record of 8 – 3, established new school standards for consecutive wins to open a season (7) and most points scored in a season (317).   Along the way junior Quarterback P.J. Zingler became the school’s all-time leading passer, senior Malcolm Westbrook became the all-time leader in pass receptions, senior Moses Webb established the single season touchdown record (16), and junior running back Brandon Williams-Price rushed for more than 1,000 yards.  Coach Verducci became Bishop Ireton’s all time leader in wins this fall as well.

Seniors were presented with personalized fleece blankets and scrapbooks as a means of recognizing their individual sacrifices and contributions to the football program.  Coach Harry Busch was also presented a blanket that commemorated his five years of leading the JV team, including the last two as Head JV Football Coach.  Seniors Malcolm Westbrook and Moses Webb were named as the Co-MVPs and Eddie D’Antuono identified as the team Cardinal Award winner.  Jacob Ramey (offensive line), P.J. Zingler (quarterback), Hudson Sullivan (linebacker), Andrew Lutterloh (defensive line), and Aurelien Guillaud (punter) were recognized as the most outstanding players on offense, defense, and special teams.  Junior defensive back Justin Paige and senior receiver Merid Merid were name the most improved players, while senior linebacker Andrew Bladen and senior guard Patrick O’Connell were honored as the “12th Man” who set outstanding examples by their spirit and effort.

Coach Verducci presented gifts to senior parents who served on the Football Team Parent Executive Board and the players presented each coach with a framed team photo.  Coach Verducci will attend the VISFA Coaches Meeting on December 14, 2011, where several Cardinals are expected to receive all state recognition for their outstanding play this fall.  He and the coaches will conduct Player/Parent/Coach meetings during January to establish expectations for the 2012 season.  Current students and applicants who would like more information about the Cardinal Football Program can contact Coach Verducci at

Cardinals Dump Saints in St Stephens home opener, 58-36

Junior Davon Wiley scored a game-high 19 points in the win over St Stephens/St Agnes on Monday

Bishop Ireton’s road weary Cardinals (2-1) showed little sign of fatigue in their third straight game away from Cambridge Road in a 58-36 dismantling of St Stephens/St Agnes School Monday night in Goodwin Gym.

St Stephens (0-1) grabbed their only lead of the night at 3-0, before Davon Wiley tied the game at 3 enroute to scoring Ireton’s first 8 points, part of his game-high 19 that he contributed in the win.  Easily his best game of the young season, the 6′ 3″ junior dropped a pair of three-point shots and a dunk on the Saints and generally played well on both ends of the floor throughout the game.

While the Saints’ first outing was a cold shooting one for home team,  the Cardinals in their third game  lit the scoreboard up racing to a 21-7 advantage in the first period.  Buoyed by the Wiley dunk in the second quarter, the Cardinals dominated the glass and quickly got into the attack to balloon the lead to 31-8 with 3:31 left in the half. Following a time out, the clubs traded hoops, but that was little consolation as the home team went to the locker room down 39-16.

Ireton extended the lead to 43-16 to open the third quarter, a ragged one that saw turnovers on both ends of the floor, but Ireton holding a 50-24 advantage after 3 quarters enroute to the final score.

Junior Louie Khouri added 10 for Ireton with a pair of three-pointers, while sophomore Tyler McHugh had a good night with 9, Dan Noe chipped in 5, as did senior Malcolm Westbrook, and five more Cardinals added a duce.  Phil Guglielmo led the Saints scoring with 10, including a pair of three-balls, while Justin Goldsborough had 8 and Steward 6. While Ireton converted only 8 of 14 free throws, the Saints managed only 5 of 17 on the night, adding to their first night woes.

The Cardinals open their home schedule Wednesday night, as the back end of a girl/boy varsity doubleheader. While the girls entertain the Cubs of Visitation in the opener at 5pm, the boys will host the Wolves of Pope John Paul the Great in a rematch of their season opener at the Flint Hill tournament last Friday afternoon, the first of a five-game homestand the Cardinals will play before the holiday break.

Indoor track sprints to record times at North Stafford meet

Junior Brandon Price-Williams has taken his speed from the football field to the track for Bishop Ireton's indoor track club.

This past weekend the Bishop Ireton indoor track team ran in its first meet of the season and surprised even themselves.  The team has been working hard since November, including a number of freshmen running in their first high school track meet.  They include  Isela Vasquez, Lolo Hogue, Christiana Grant, and John Holbrook.

The meet kicked off at 10 and by 10:30 the Cardinals had their first bronze when BJ Townley finished third in the Triple Jump.  His time of 1:11.4 in the 500 represented his second bronze of the day and a new indoor school record.  The second indoor school record was set by Ricca Graham in the 500.   Brandon Price-Williams  set the third record with a time of 6.89 in the 55 meter dash.  He and fellow football standout Justin Paige both competed in the 55 meter final and both ran a personal best time.

Nicole Bond continues to show why she is one of the WCAC’s strongest competitors with her third place finish in the 300.  Her time of 43.9 is just shy of Colleen McFadden’s school record of 43.1.  Colleen now competes for the Naval Academy and was formerly one of BI’s most accomplished sprinters.

JP Ryan ran a incredibly strong race against some of Virginia high schools best in the 1000.  His time of 3:02 in the 1000 meters was faster than his previous time in the 800, a race 200 yards shorter.  Tavon Smith and Albert Schibani were pleasant surprises for Coach Mark Holmes when Tevon recorded a time of 1:16 in the 500, and Albert a time of 40.5 in the 300 meter event.

The weather for this past weekend was unseasonably warm and provided the perfect setting for this indoor meet held outdoors.  The team travels to the famed Prince Georges County sports and learning complex for a meet against the area’s best indoor track athletes this coming weekend.  This will be the club’s first meet on the track that has held the indoor US Nationals previously.

Late Goal spoils Cardinals 3rd period comeback, 4-3

Cardinals fall to O'Connell in a one-goal heartbreaker for second time in two seasons.

In a rematch of last season’s first round playoff foes, the Cardinal Varsity Hockey team travelled to Kettler Capitals Iceplex last Friday for an afternoon tilt with the Knights from O’Connell.  Like the playoff game from last Spring, this entertaining game also ended in heartbreak for the Ireton squad, coming up 1 goal short again on a late score by the Knights, falling 4-3.

The game did not start well for the Ireton team, falling behind 3-0 before the first period was over, despite dominating the game territorially and on the shot chart.  A late goal by Nick Tangora, on an assist from Stephen Gerke, brought the Cardinals to within 3-1 at the break.  The Ireton squad came out firing in the second period, again outshooting the Knights squad by a wide margin, but were unable to penetrate the O’Connell goalie.  With the Cardinal defense also tightening up, the score remained 3-1 after two periods.

In the third, the Ireton offense began to turn up the heat and finally got rewarded for their efforts.  The combination of Tangora and Gerke clicked again, with Tangora netting his second goal of the game about halfway through the final frame, bringing the Cardinals within a goal.  The duo was not done yet however, and just under three minutes later they tied the score at 3 with Stephen Gerke netting his first of the season, on assists from Tangora and Dillon Roach.  Despite repeated pressure from all sides, the Cardinals were not able to secure the go-ahead tally, and a goal by O’Connell with under a minute to play in regulation sent the Cardinal squad to their second loss in as many games.  Nick Tangora (2 goals, 1 assist) and Stephen Gerke (1 goal, 2 assists) led the scoring with 3 points each, and Dillon Roach added an assist.

The Ireton Hockey team continues their NVSHL league schedule next Monday, December 12th, at 5:45 pm at the Mt. Vernon Rec. Center against Dominion.  This is the first home game for the Cardinals this season.

Saints hang on to nip Cardinals, 52-51

Senior Helena Barber is a workhorse on defense for the 2011-12 team.

The Saints of St Stephens/St Agnes made sure the Cardinals would not take home another championship award from their tourney after seeing exactly that happen for 7 of the past 8 years, with a thrilling 52-51 win at St Stephens Friday night in the nightcap of the four team tourney.

The hosts held a narrow 12-11 lead after one period in a error-plagued evening for the Cambridge Road visitors. They edged the advantage to 22-20 at the half then threw an 8-1 run on the redbirds to open the second half, racing off to a 30-21 lead.

Bishop Ireton countered with a 6-0 run fueled by a tenacious defense and closed the gap to 30-27. The Saints quickly regrouped and pushed back to 35-29 after three quarters of play.

With just over 3 minutes remaining Ireton found themselves down 9 and the girls countered with a final effort that fell just short as they closed to within 47-42 with 1:28 to play before time expired with the WCAC squad down by a point.

Junior Camille Webber led Ireton with 12, senior Reeme Lghzaoui added 11, Mara Celis had 7, while Jasmine Conkright and Bianca Ojiebde chipped in 6 each.  Crenshaw of St Stephens led all scorers with 19.

The Cardinals will look back at the game as one of missed opportunities. In addition to turnovers, the paltry 12 for 23 from the free throw line came back to haunt the club who actually had one more field goal for the game than St Stephens.

Ireton (1-1) meets the loser of the Episcopal/Norfolk Academy semifinal on Saturday before returning to action on Wednesday when they face Georgetown Visitation at 5pm in Godley Gym, the first half of varsity doubleheader with Pope John Paul the Great visiting the boys in the nightcap in Godley Gym.

Ireton “Noe’s” the way in win in Flint Hill tourney

Sophomore Dan Noe (pronounced “No E”) and brother Mark combined for 24 of Ireton’s 61 points in a 61-53 win in the first round of the Flint Hill Tip Off tournament in Oakton Friday.  The Cardinals head to the finals on Saturday at 6:15 at the Flint Hill upper school campus.

Both teams got off to a sluggish start in the season opener for each.  The Wolves broke out to a 5-0 lead before the Cardinals drew to 7-6 after one quarter.

In the second, Ireton quickly drew even at 8, then the teams battled back and forth with the Cardinals nursing a lead through the period and into the locker room at 28-26.  It was the young Noe doing the damage for Ireton with 4 of the Cardinals 8 three-pointers on the night, Davon Wiley would add three and Louie Khouri opened the scoring for Ireton with a three.

Both teams continued the battle through the third period but the Cardinals started to pull way in the final period, building a 43-40 advantage to a 51-43 bulge.   John Paul the Great rallied to close the margin to 53-52 before Coach Neil Berkman’s gang pulled away for the win, sending them to the title game on Saturday.

“It’s a win, we will take it.” said a relieved Ireton mentor of the 1-0 Cardinals.

Both clubs struggled somewhat from the charity stripe on the first night of the season, John Paul the Great converting on 13 of 25 while the Cardinals cashed in on 19 of 29.

Ten Cardinals scored for the winners, led by Noe’s 16.  Khouri and Wiley each added 11, Mark Noe had 8, sophomore Ty Quarles chipped in 4, and Brandon Scales  3.

John Paul the Great’s Young was the game’s high scorer with 17, Robinson added 15, and Johnson 10 among their six players scoring.

Following the Flint Hill weekend, the Cardinals pay a visit to St Stephens/St Agnes on Monday before hosting the Wolves in a rematch in the Cardinals home opener Wednesday, Dec 7th at 7pm. The game is part of a rare girl/boy varsity doubleheader with the girls entertaining Georgetown Visitation in the opener at 5pm.
