Cardinals win WCAC opener in Girls Soccer, 5-2

The nonconference portion of a team’s schedule is designed to harden the squad for the rigors of WCAC conference play. Rival Paul VI Catholic visited Fannon Field looking to see if the Cardinals girls soccer team was ready to contend for the upper echelon of the elite conference.  “We didn’t play our best soccer today,” commented Bishop Ireton’s first year coach, Gino Leon, “but we did get a win against a good team”.

The Cardinals drew first blood when a great lead pass to senior all conference forward Katrina Guillou led to Ireton’s first goal with 34:06 remaining in the first half.  Shortly thereafter, Ciana Puglise scored Ireton’s second goal in the 12th minute of play to expand the lead to 2-0.

PVI countered almost immediately as the Cardinals momentarily looked somewhat flat-footed and disorganized in their defensive end and junior Cali Hutson found the back of the net to trim the lead to 2-1.  Just over 5 minutes later however, the Cardinals regained the two goal margin when sophomore Meaghan Reilly tallied her first goal in WCAC action.

The second half saw Panther senior Danielle Guenbaum get by the Cardinals goalkeeper for an easy lay up to close the margin to 3-2 with about 15 minutes gone. Guillou took another perfectly led pass to beat the PVI defense to put Ireton up 4-2 with 16 minutes remaining and her perfect corner kick resulted Karina Azar’s header with seconds left in the contest to close the game 5-2.

The JV teams struggled to a 0-0 tie in the nightcap and will have the week off as the varsity roadtrip on Friday is a one team affair.  The Cardinals travel to St James for a varsity only contest, start time is 5:30pm at St James.

Battling Cardinals Overcome Roadrunners 3-1 in Volleyball

In a series of runs in the first game, Laura Hart made the key tip in the game’s final volley to give the Cardinals a narrow 25-23 win. Seton jumped to a 4-1 lead on the strength of dominating kills by  but Ireton rebounded with steady play to pull in front 11-8. The Roadrunners regrouped the the teams seesawed back and forth, finally tied at 22.  The final run when to the Cardinals winning  on the great play by Hart.

The game saw the Cardinals jump out to a 9-4 lead early, again playing steady and avoiding mistakes early. At 12-8, however, Seton pressed the Cardinals and, aided by some unforced errors, rallied to take 15-14 advantage on a 6-0 run, finally broken by an Asha Cook ****. The teams traded points with the Roadrunners nursing the volleys worked 22-20 only to see Ireton patiently work themselves back to a 23-22 lead. After a time out, the Cardinals won the next point before losing service. Elizabeth Shaeffermaier saved the redbirds with a **** from the post to give Ireton another narrow 25-23 win in game two.

Game three saw the Roadrunners bolt to 6-0 advantage before the Cardinals began to chip away at the lead.  Led by Imani Brown, the Roadrunners kept up the strong play with a series of digs and built the lead to 21-15.  Seton had a big size advantage that they began to exploit at the net in the third and blunted an Ireton rally that had drawn the Cardinals to 21-16 before 14 made another **** to go up 23-16 and win on an unforced error on a serve 25-16 in the third.

Ireton improves to 3-0 with 42-14 win over Saints

Bishop Ireton’s Tony Franklin offense stretches defenses and can be a high octane explosion.   The Cardinals looked to be explosive in the first half of their 42-14 win over St Stephens/St Agnes Saturday at Fannon Field.

The redbird defense kept the Saints stymied most of the day as well, although Saints stellar running back junior Darius Menora gained a game-high 95 yards rushing and junior Myles Nelson was 9-18 passing for 104 but also gave up a pair of interceptions to Robert Banez and Jack Luzik.

Ireton had a textbook start to the “backyard brawl” on Cambridge Road. After Malcolm Westbrook returned the opening kickoff 41 yards to the Saints 46, junior quarterback PJ Zingler went to work connecting with Brandon Price-Williams for 5 yards and Matt McShea for 27 more.  After Price-Williams picked a yard on his first carry, Zingler tossed a 13-yard aerial to Moses Webb for the first of three touchdowns the senior running back would score on the afternoon.   It was a 4-play, 46 yard drive with only 1:10 gone in the game.

The Saints first drive started as poorly as the Cardinals was good. Myles Nelson battled center snaps most of the afternoon and the first offense play resulted in a difficult snap to control and 12 yard loss. With no gain on a rush, the third down saw yet another tough snap to corral and St Stephens’ Sam Gallahan punted from deep in their own end of the field.

The home team was in business on the Saints 38, but the white-shirted visitors played a tough defense and held Ireton on downs regaining possession on their own 38.  The offense, however, mustered only a first down before punting the football and the Cardinals got the ball back on the Ireton 15.

Both teams would trade punts on their next possessions as the first quarter was drawing to a close.  The Cards took the ball on their own 25 and Zingler hit Justin Paige for 9 yards before handing off to Moses Webb.  The Ireton track sprinter bolted 66 yards, outrunning the Saints down the sideline, to score with :03.3 remaining in the opening period.

The Saints immediately countered to open the second quarter, as Nelson connected with Teddy Shervin for 11 yards and Gallahan for 32 more before sophomore Percy Martin broke free for a 36-yard touchdown run to close the gap to 14-7.

Before St Stephens could gain any momentum, however, Ireton responded with their third scoring drive of the game, a 10-play, 71 yard drive capped off by Webb’s third touchdown.  On the ensuing visitors’ drive, senior Robert Banez picked off a Nelson pass and returned it deep in Saints’ territory at the 17. Moments later Zingler tossed the third of five touchdown passes, this time to Malcolm Westbrook and the Cardinals were in high gear at 28-7.

A Saints drive began to stall late in the second quarter and, when Patrick O’Connell and Andrew Bladen stopped Martin on 4th and 1 for no gain, Zingler went back to work with little left in the half.  Price-Williams and Webb rushed for 9 and 7 yards respectively then the lanky junior quarterback found Westbrook for a 46-yard strike with seconds left in the half to send Ireton to the locker room with a 35-7 advantage.

The second half was a continuation of the first as Ireton forced St Stephens into a three and out, and promptly went back to work. In three plays, the Cardinals moved 75 yards for their final score of the day, aided by a 46 yard jaunt by Price-Williams, when Merid Merid snared a 24-yard scoring pass to push the lead to 42-7.

The high school running clock rule took effect and Cardinal reserves began to see some playing time for Ireton.  As the game moved into the 4th quarter the Saints (0-2) mounted their best offensive effort, an 86-yard drive for the final touchdown of the afternoon.  Nelson combined a pair of passes to junior Khaamal Whitaker and the rushing of Manora, who gained 35 of his yards on the day on this march, and capped the drive with an 18-yard scamper to the endzone.

Zingler had another strong day at quarterback, going 17 of 23 for 236 yards and 5 touchdowns, while Price-Williams rushed for 87 yards and Webb 84 on the day.  All totaled, Ireton gained 451 offensive yards, 247 yards through the air and 204 on the ground.

Westbrook, one the area’s top receivers hauled in 5 passes for 93 yards and 2 TDs, one of 8 Cardinals to catch a pass from Zingler and Houston Sullivan. Price-Williams had 4 catches for 59 yards, Webb 3/19 and McShea and Merid 2 each for 33 and 32 yards respectively.

“I continue to be quite pleased with the focus we bring to the field for every game.  We knew St. Stephen’s had some very talented players and wanted to score early and play from out in front.  Our offensive line has done a superb job the past two weeks of balancing the run with the pass and our playmakers, Moses Webb, Malcolm Westbrook, and Brandon Williams-Price contributed explosive plays.” praised Bishop Ireton’s head man, Tony Verducci. “Our defense did an excellent job of running to the ball and creating turnovers this week.  We’re pleased to be 3 – 0 and looking forward to traveling across Quaker Lane to play an always tough Episcopal High School team.”

Bishop Ireton (3-0) looks to complete the Alexandria private school sweep when they journey a mile and a half to Episcopal High School’s Hummel Bowl Saturday to face the Maroon (0-1), coming off an opening day loss to Flint Hill 10-7. It is “Migration” to Quaker Lane for the Ireton faithful as the Cardinals encourage all students, fans, and alums to join the undefeated squad for the 1:30pm kickoff.  It is the first visit to Episcopal since the 2006 season when Coach Pete Rotkis took Ireton down the road for what was a 35-6 win for the home team.

Cardinals’ girls tennis upend defending WCAC champs, 5-4

Senior Mary Rose White has been a 4-year contributor to varsity tennis.

An old sports saying is that “you don’t have to always be ahead if you have the heart to come from behind”.  Katie Sloper’s Cardinals lived the message Friday when they dumped PVI, the WCAC’s reining girls tennis champs, 5-4 in Fairfax.

The match was postponed 24 hours due to rain but when the Cardinals arrived at Fairfax High School, they were ready to play.  Falling behind 2-4 after the first 6 individual matches, the girls regrouped to sweep the three doubles matches and win the day, 5-4.

Seniors Mary Rose White and  Christy Macey played #1 doubles, winning 8-3. Their match was the deciding match and first match for freshman Kirsten Ann Parker and junior Cristina Spinetto, who took the #3 doubles, 8-6.

“We have put in a lot of time and effort into our doubles with strategies and improving our confidence up at the net. This was very beneficial when it came down to taking all doubles. The girls have great patience and focus when it came down to pressured situations.” praised head coach Katie Sloper, whose squads have engineered some memorable wins.

Last season Sloper’s girls ended a 5-year WCAC dual match winning streak when they topped St Johns College High School 5-4. The win over the defending champions opened the WCAC season for the Cardinals.

Girls Home Opener a Rousing success, 6-2

Senior Katrina Guillou continues a scoring avalanche as Cardinals open WCAC season Tuesday with PVI visiting Fannon Field.

Before a boisterous crowd of classmates, the Cardinals’ girls soccer team opened its varsity season with a 6-2 victory over a good Stone Ridge Gators squad from Bethesda.

Senior all conference player Katrina Guillou netted a 3 goal performance and  Karina Azar, Ciana Puglise, and Gabby Barowski each added a tally for the home squad.  While Guillou finished the redbirds’ attack, it was midfielders  Puglise and Anna Wissler that set the plays in action as they dominated the midfield for Ireton.

Bishop Ireton raced out to a 4-0 halftime advantage and the clubs traded goals in the second half on an overcast, blustery fall day that fell like late October to the huddled fans braving the spitting rain and chilly northwest winds.  “They are a strong team, that plays extremely well together.” said Gators head coach, Travis Beardall, who’s club is the reining ISL Division “A” champions. “Good luck to the Cardinals, they look ready to have a great season.”

The Cardinals open the WCAC season Tuesday at 4pm when they host the PVI Panthers. JV won their contest 3-0 over Stone Ridge in Bethesda.

Wolves upend Cardinals in boys soccer, 2-1

Cardinals battle Don Bosco, Cristo Rey on Fannon Field in the home opener for Bishop Ireton.

Senior Nestor Arias staked Don Bosco, Cristo Rey to a 1-0 first half lead, then junior Emanuel Omogbo split two Ireton defenders with 39;17 left and the Wolves held on to win 2-1 in the home opener for Bishop Ireton’s boys soccer team.

“I think I wanted more.” said the tall, slender Omogbo of his gamewinning tally. “It is my first year playing high school soccer, I am a basketball player.”
The Cardinals moved the ball effectively and had shots on goal, but couldn’t find the net until senior Nick Galdos was awarded a penalty kick with 22 minutes remaining in the contest. The four-year varsity player made no doubt in burying the shot and Ireton continued to press the visitors hard in their end.
Elliot Fantino dribbled and passed the Cardinals into a number of opportunities but the Don Bosco squad denied the goals with strong goal keeping and consistently clearing the Ireton corner kick opportunities.
Ireton (0-1-1) heads to Fairfax on Monday to open the WCAC campaign at PVI.  Gametime for the varsity contest is 6:45pm, JV will kickoff at 5:30pm on Panther Field.

Ty Gardner joins Cardinal sports medicine team

Ty Gardner joins Cardinals' sports medicine department for 2011-12 school year.

Mr. Ty Gardner, a recent graduate of the George Mason athletic training program, has joined the Bishop Ireton sports medicine staff as an assistant to head certified athletic trainer, Mr. Matt Horton.

Ireton athletic director Bill Simmons was effusive in his enthusiasm for Gardner joining the staff. “We now have more than 40 teams and nearly 600 athletes in the program. Mr. Horton is often overwhelmed during the day with trying to prepare athletes for games while at the same time trying to conduct the physical therapy necessary to aid in the recovery of injured athletes. Ty will really improve our capabilities, including coverage of practices.”
The George Mason grad began his duties on September 8th and supervised his first Cardinal event on Saturday when the field hockey team hosted Bishop O’Connell on Fannon Field.  He got an early baptism to the rigors of the job when a JV football player broke his femur earlier in the day at practice.
“I look forward to a very exciting year for Bishop Ireton athletics.  I will do everything in my power to ensure that is a safe and successful year.” promised the Gainesville, Florida, native.

Volleyball Splits 4 games at Fredericksburg Christian Tourney

Senior Laura Hart will play a large part in the success the Cardinals have this season according to head coach Kathy Gutmann

Coach Kathy Gutmann’s Cardinals hit the road after the weather cancelled their Friday match at Bishop O’Connell to play in the Fredericksburg Christian Academy tournament on Saturday. The single day event features many of the state’s top private school volleyball teams and the Cards went 2-2 in the day’s activities.

Ireton opened with a 25-14, 26-24 win over the Seton School of Manassas, Virginia. They were upended by Eastern Mennonite, a traditionally strong volleyball program, 20-25, 18-25 in the second round.

The Cardinals bounced back to stop Model School 19-25, 25-13, 25-7 before falling in the semifinals to host Fredericksburg Christian, 18-25, 17-25.

“We played well, this was the work I had hoped we would get during the lost time from earthquakes and hurricanes,” commented Gutmann. “Ashley Cabrera was an all tourney nominee, she had a great day serving the ball, including 8 points off the serve in the Seton game.  I thought that Caroline Elliott served the ball well and senior Laura Hart and Emileigh Rettig were strong at on attack.”

Cardinals head to WCAC powerhouse Good Counsel on Monday and will host St Mary Rykien in Godley Gym on Friday. That venue change of a rescheduled match will include the Cardinals now traveling to Leonardtown on Sept 27th.
