Eagles survive 4-3 in season opener

Bishop Ireton (0-1) entered the 2010 season with a number of question marks and the defending WCAC champions, rival Gonzaga (1-0) coming to Fannon Field. On a blistering hot afternoon, with temperatures at gametime in the upper 90’s, Coach Jon Norem’s charges looked anything but intimidated by the Eagles.

Freshman Shahin Bakhshi-Azar scored his first Ireton goal unassisted to stake the Cardinals to a 1-0 advantage with 12:17 gone in the first half with a shot from 25 yards away.  At 26:41 the Eagles Sean Connaughton scored on a breakaway to even the score at 1-1.

Senior Dan O’Keefe scalded a rebound of a direct kick at the 29:45 mark to put the Alexandrians back in front, but a penalty kick at 36:04 by senior Joey Wilkins knotted the score again.

Gonzaga added a pair of talliies in the second half, by senior Colin Richardson at 12:30 and junior Timmy Boyle at 19:50, but the Cardinals continued to fight and pulled the Cards to 4-3 with just under 15 minutes to play.

The DC visitors dominated the shots on goal, but Ireton played the more experienced Eagles near even throughout the contest and won balls and gave the purple clad vistors all they could handle.

“We played an inspired game,” said Ireton skipper, Jon Norem. “I hope we set the bar up high for our players. We don’t have great depth, but we proved we can play with the top teams in our conference.”

Gonzaga overwhelmed the young Cardinals in the JV contest 6-0.

The Cardinals have some time to fine tune with a break until Tuesday when St Johns visits Fannon Field, game time is 4pm for the varsity tilt.
