Pearson leads Cardinals to 10-4 win

Meghan Pearson belted a pair of doubles, driiving in a season high four runs as the Cardinals closed their WCAC regular season with a 10-4 pasting of the Tartans of Holy Cross.  The junior cleared the bases in the third with her first double, and plated her 4th RBI in her next appearance when she lined another two-bagger.

Sophmore Micki Crouch picked up her 9th win of the year for the Cardinals, who improved to 6-10 in the WCAC, a far cry from last year when the young Ireton team struggled through the regular season without a win.

“What a great day at the plate for Meghan,” beamed a happy Kathy Gutmann as she headed to Kensington for the post season meeting of softball coaches. The Cardinals appear to be headed for a #6 seed in the upcoming tournament and a first round date with St Mary’s Ryken in Leonardtown.  But for today, there was a satisfying win to savor for the Cambridge Road squad.

The junior varsity tilt was postponed Tuesday afternoon when a family emergency for the Holy Cross coach left the squad without leadership for the 4pm date at Hensley Field. The contest will not be rescheduled because of the pending varsity tournament and ends the campaign for the young Cardinals.

The Ireton track and field team broke six school and MileStat.com team records, including one held by BI hall of famer Jessica Wolfe. The Boys 4×100 relay comprised of Sam Ferrara, Moses Webb, Doug Vines, and Mark Holmes took 2nd place with a scorching time 43.81 to set a new school record. The Girls 4×400 relay team (Madeline Thomas, Marin Nolan, Nicole Bond, and Shannon Gordon) placed 5th with Ireton’s third best time ever of 4:15.72. The Boys 4×800 relay team (Arthur Stier, Liam O’Connor, Daniel Burns, and Michael Andersen) placed 7th with a time of 8:34.27.

Knights become Ireton’s first WCAC win, 8-5

 by Matt Krause

Baseball players are sometimes referred to as the “boys of summer”. The calendar might have said May 1, but it sure felt like summer on Saturday at Frank Mann Field at Four Mile Run Park, where the Cardinals hosted the St. Mary’s Ryken Knights. Luckily for the fans who braved the noontime sun, the Cardinal bats were as hot as the temperature.

After Jake Guttman, who battled through a stomach virus to take the hill for the Cardinals, shut out the Knights in the first, it was time for the offense. Tommy Kiesner led off with a single, followed by an Andrew Selby double. The Cardinals took their first lead when Lem Zeigler tripled, scoring both baserunners. A Corey Phillips double plated Zeigler, and Guttman returned to the hill with a three run lead.

From there, the score remained 3-0 until the 3rd, when Ryken put a run on the board courtesy of two singles and an RBI groundout. The Cardinals, who were being handled in the early innings by SMR pitcher Bailey Buckler, lost their lead in the 4th when Ryken tied the contest on a a few hits and a sac fly. The tying of the game was a signal that an already weakened Guttman had reached the end of the tank, and Andrew Bladen came on for the last three innings.

Bladen got off to a rocky start, surrendering a solo homer to SMR catcher Brendan Burch in the 5th. This allowed the Knights to take their only lead of the game at 4-3. Luckily for the Cardinals, runs came quickly. Every Cardinal hitter got a plate appearance in the 5th, and Nick Tangora even got two.

The Cardinals had a monster inning, scoring four runs on hits by Nick Tangora and Corey Phillips, as well as walks by Tommy Kiesner (Intentional), Andrew Selby, Brian Lewis, and Andrew Bladen. To add to the party, Lem Zeigler was hit by a pitch. When the inning ended, the Cards were solidly on top, 7-4.

After Bladen shut down the Knights in the 6th, BI added an insurance run when Mike Barber led off with a walk and scored on Tommy Kiesner’s third hit of the day, a double. Bladen hit a small speed bump in the 7th, when SMR led off with a single, followed by a hit batter, and a single on a call that could have given the Cardinals a double play, but were left with the bases loaded and no out. No problem for Andrew Bladen. He got the Ryken hitter to ground into a double play, although surrendering a run in the process. The next hitter, CF Kyle Jensen, ended the game with a groundout, giving BI an 8-5 victory. The Cardinals began to celebrate their first WCAC win, happy that some momentum was finally on their side.

Ireton players know a much tougher challenge awaits Tuesday night in Washington Post #1 St. John’s. Game time is 5:30 PM at Frank Mann Field at Four Mile Run Park

Cardiac Cardinals rally late to win, 4-3

St Stephens chipped away at the Cardinals for five innings, scratching out a run in the first, second, and fifth innings while the Saints Alexi Sargent baffled the home team, recording 14 strikeouts.  But on Senior Day at Luckett Field, Ireton found a way in the bottom of the sixth, plating all four of their runs in a thrilling 4-3 win.

Junior Caroline Boddie was hit by a pitch to open the frame, Julie Smolak singled.  Sophomore pitcher Micki Crouch drilled a bases-clearing triple to pull Ireton to within 3-2. Mandy Imbriglia, another of the senior heroines of the morning, walked, stole second before Debbie Ward singled to right driving home Crouch and Imbriglia.

Crouch, who recorded ten strike outs of her own on the day, shut the Saints out in the top of the seventh to secure the Cardinals 8th win on the campaign, and boosting their profile as the final state polls are tabulated to determine state playoff seedings.

“Great win on senior day” commented a pleased Kathy Gutmann. “I am happy for Mandy, Julie, and Bev (Thomas) to go out this way over a very good cross town rival. We are definitely going in the right direction with the season winding down and playoffs ahead.” Ireton hosts Holy Cross Tuesday at Luckett Field, gametime is 4pm.

Panthers Nip Cardinals, 3-1

by Matt Krause

Freshman  The dictionary suggests it is one who is a student in the first year of the course at a university, college, or high school, a novice or beginner, or one lacking experience or seniority.  Based on such a definition, one wouldn’t expect such a person to hold the Paul VI Panthers, the #4 team in the Washington area, to only three runs on six hits. However, BI’s freshman Cody Hagenston challenged that definition with a strong outing on the mound for the Cardinals Thursday.

Hagenston started slow, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk in the first. PVI’s Matt Kianka doubled, followed by a walk, and another double, scoring a pair. The bleeding was stopped when PVI’s Jonathan Bitto was tagged out at home for the 3rd out after a single by Robbie Kidd. Ireton’s hitters were stifled in the first two innings, as PVI’s Lance Veeder struck out four of the first six hitters.

After Hagenston threw two shutout innings, Jake Guttman hit a leadoff double, and came home on a pair of groundouts, with the RBI going to Mike Barber. This cut the PVI lead in half at 2-1, which would remain the score through the fourth and fifth, as both starters threw a pair of shutout frames. PVI got an insurance run in the sixth when Tyler Costello was hit, and then doubled home by Robbie Kidd. Hagenston recovered, and finished the game with five straight outs.

Speaking of outs, Ireton, who had left two men on in the fifth, could not score with a man on and no out in the sixth, and got a leadoff walk in the seventh, but left the inning thinking of one that got away. Hagenston’s gem, with solid defensive backing, was hopefully a sign of things to come for the Cardinals, both now and in the future. If the bats can wake up, good things will happen, possibly Saturday, when the Cardinals host Ryken at noon.

Ireton advances to quarterfinals, 11-1

A disappointing loss to St Johns on Senior Day sent the Cardinals to the play-in round in the WCAC 2010 boys lacrosse championship tournament on Saturday.  Bishop Ireton responded with a lopsided win on a hot afternoon, 11-1. The team, shorthanded with injuries to Mike Larrabee, Dom Puglise, and Robert Chastian, found new players to pick up the play.

After a slow start and liberal substituting to keep players fresh on the suddenly sweltering synthetic turf, Ireton built a 2-0 halftime advantage in to a 8-1 lead after the third quarter.  Corey Cosgrove kept the Lions off the board playing a strong game in net, while Tommy Kestermann played some offense for Ireton, recording a goal in the game.

It was freshman Joe King that led the redbirds in scoring on Saturday with three goals. Senior Kevin Galloway notched a pair as did sophomore Brandon Attiliis. Senior John Sullivan scored his first goal of the season for Ireton as well in a dominating third quarter, where Ireton pulled away to the win.

Cardinals hit the road on Monday for a quarterfinal match with DeMatha. Gametime and venue will be announced by the DeMatha athletic department on Monday.
