Ireton edges St Mary Ryken, 1-0

Bishop Ireton (1-5) earned its first WCAC win of the young campaign with a hard fought 1-0 decision over St Mary Ryken Tuesday at Fannon Field.  The Cardinals returning home for only the second home game in six contests, played one of their best games of the season according to Coach Jon Norem. “We were short handed because of some injuries, so we talked about letting the ‘ball do the work’ for us and that is exactly what we did today. We created more opportunities than we have all season so far.”

With senior Peter Giambone and Andre Reveille controlling the midfield effectively throughout nearly all the contest, Ryken managed but a single shot on goal in the first half.  When they did penetrate the offensive zone, Miles Campbell regularly turned them away before a play could develop.

After a scoreless first half where Ireton outshot the Knights 4-1, Ryken made their strongest effort of the game to open the second stanza. That second half pressure led to six second half shots on net, but Frankie Massa was steady and occasionally brilliant in his play in goal.  CJ Hancock converted on a Kevin Moran corner kick to record the game’s only goal with 23:50 to play in the game. He would be denied minutes later but the damage was done from the Ryken perspective. “It felt good” said Hancock of his third goal of the season, “I had a good feeling at that point about how the game would go.”

It was Nick Galdos and Drew Bedford, both of whom played the entire 80 minutes, that closed the door as the match wore down.  “We put put Drew on their best player and he shut him down.” said the Ireton skipper.  There’s no rest for the weary road warriors, however, as they don their cardinal red again Wednesday for a nonconference battle with the IAC’s Landon Bears in Bethesda at 4:30.  From there they head to Forestville for another WCAC date with the Mustangs of Bishop McNamara at 4pm.

Ireton downs Flint Hill, 4-2

Bishop Ireton (2-4) played its most complete soccer game of the season, dismantling a shorthanded Husky squad from Flint Hill Monday, 4-2. The Cardinals controlled the play from the outset, rarely giving the visitors a good look at the goal, asking keeper Joanna Falletti to make but three saves on the afternoon.

It was a team win, but sophomore Katrina Guillou scored three times to lead Ireton. “I was lucky to get some great passes from my teammates.” explained the slight forward. “We are really coming together as a team and playing well as a group.”  Emma Baldwin sent Guillou alone to the net with a long perfectly placed pass to give Ireton a 1-0 with 19:25 remaining in the first half.  Flint Hill would answer when Savannah Block converted a Kim Swart pass to knot the game at 1-1.

The Cardinals quickly countered with Guillou’s second goal in the 34th minute of the initial half when senior Jackie Galdos sent a long arching indirect kick to the slashing young 10th grader who knocked it past senior goalie Kim Tilton. Stephanie Kapurch found Guillou with 2:06 left in the opening half and the lead ballooned to 3-1.

Ireton controlled the ball and pace to start the second half and a tiring Husky squad was victimized a fourth time when the Cardinals’ Baldwin gave the ball to senior Catherine Vasquez for the final Ireton tally of the contest.   Flint Hill tacked on a late goal on a beautiful pass from Marlo Sweatman to a wide open Swart who brought the Huskies to the final 4-2.

The homestand ends for the Cardinals as they travel to St Mary Ryken Tuesday before returning home Friday to host WCAC favorite, St Johns College High School. Varsity start for both contests is 4pm with JV to follow approximately 5:30pm.

Cardinals Fly by Riverdale Baptist, 31-7

“It was probably the best game offensively and defensively that we have played against an opponent of this quality.” said head coach Tony Verducci following the Ireton(2-0) 31-7 dismantling of Riverdale Baptist’s Crusaders (1-2) Saturday in Alexandria. “They are a good football team, and for us to play so well on both sides of the ball was what you hope to get.”

The “good guys” took junior Josh Forbes’ opening kickoff to the Riverdale five-yard line, where speedster Doug Vines was horsecollar tackled to add penalty yards by penalty to the first play of the game.  From there quarterback Mike Larrabee rolled left and strolled untouched into the end on the first play from scrimmage to give the Cards a 7-0 lead. It quickly became 14-0 when a Vines punt return again set Ireton in great field position. Larrabee hit Tommy Kestermann for a 10-yard pass and BI quickly held a 14-0 bulge minutes into the contest.  In a game with plenty of special-team excitement, the Crusaders responded with their own kickoff return as senior Devin Goode took Theo Daubresse’s kick at the 3 yard line and bolted past three Cardinals, up the middle and outraced the cardinal-clad Alexandrians 97 yards for a touchdown.

The defense, led by senior Conlan McCallister, made sure for the second week in a row that there would be no comeback from a visitor to Fannon Field. The game settled into a struggle with turnovers and a dominating performance by the Ireton defense during the second stanza and the clubs went to the locker rooms 14-7.

The home team came out determined not to see any slowdown in production similar to their opening week game. The offense went to work with renewed energy as Larrabee guided the lads to a third quarter tally that gave Ireton breathing room at 21-7.  The defense continued to pound the bigger Crusaders and the Upper Marlboro, Maryland team seemed to lose a step as the half wore on. The Cardinals used a beautiful drive in the fourth quarter to burn some time off the clock, then, for all purposes, closed the door on any comeback hopes when Larrabee hit a wide open sophomore Andrew Bladen for a 32-yard strike to push the lead to 28-7.  The defense stayed rock steady and the offense gave reserves a look on the final drive which culminated in senior Mark Holmes’ 31 yard field goal into a slight northwesterly wind. It marked the third different Cardinal kicker to score, with Larrabee kicking three PATs, Daubresse adding the fourth, and Holmes drilling the field goal.

Ireton will continue to enjoy home cooking as the Cardinals will host their third straight visitors, next week Woodberry Forest travels to Alexandria for a 2pm kickoff.

Cardinals top Saints, 2-0

The Cardinals snared their first win of the young campaign with a dominating 2-0 shutout of city rival St Stephens/St Agnes School at Ireton on Friday.  Outshooting the visiting Saints by a 10-2 margin for the contest, the cardinal and gold controlled play for much of the contest with the game Saints.  Ciana Puglise got the Catholic school on the board at 23:57 left in the first half, and senior Jackie Galdos missed a penalty kick over the crossbar at the 12 minute mark remaining to keep it close for the green clad visitors.

Eleyni Rodriguez worked some fancy dribbling and a dazzling pass to Katrina Guillou with 18:29 left in the contest to put some distance and breathing room in the contest for Ireton.  The Cardinals (1-4) had 4 corner kicks in the game while denying the Saints a corner opportunity. St Stephens/St Agnes falls to 0-2 on the season. Ireton hosts its second ISL opponent when Flint Hill visits Fannon Field on Monday.

Panthers overcome Ireton girls, 2-1

Bishop Ireton battled for 80 minutes Tuesday, gaining their first lead of the season, but couldn’t overcome a pair of goals by freshman Cali Hutson in a 2-1 setback at Fannon Field.

“Getting down is tough, but our girls played a gutsy game, especially on defense,” commented PVI head coach, Meg Ashley. The 20-year veteran on the Panther bench liked the way her girls responded to falling behind early.  Indeed, the Cardinals came out like a house a fire, clogging the midfield and choking off the Fairfax school’s attack.  Ireton meantime stormed the offensive zone and senior Stephanie Kapurch gave the cardinal and gold a 1-0 lead just over 3 minutes into the contest.  As Ireton pressed the offense, shots missed and opportunities to pad the lead evaporated.

Senior Kelly Caputy found Hutson just over 17 minutes into the contest for the freshman’s first goal of the game for PVI and the Cardinals came back with more offensive pressure, including two shots off the crossbar. Sophomore Gaby Godette sent a long outlet pass to speedster Katrina Guillou, but the Ireton forward bounced off the crossbar and harmlessly away in the 20th minute.

The play of the game came in the 22nd minute of the second half when Paul VI senior Jordan Zovala made a perfect pass to Hutson wh coolly dribbled through three Ireton defenders before unloading a blistering shot past the diving Joanna Faletti for the game winner.

“We were disappointed to lose, but as a team, we like the continued improvement in our play.  We know we are learning and growing, the wins will come.  We like what we are doing.” said second year Ireton coach, Marianna Sullivan.  “We will be OK, we are going in the right direction.”

The Cardinals end a long home stand with a nonconference tilt with cross-town rival, St Stephens/St Agnes School in a varsity only match at 4pm on Friday.

Naval Academy Honors Coach Frank McCallister

Bishop Ireton’s Associate Head Football Coach, Frank McCallister, was chosen as one of the United States Naval Academy’s most outstanding offensive linemen for the school’s 50th Anniversary of play at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. A group of ten linemen will be honored before and during halftime of the Midshipmen’s game this Saturday, September 12, against Ball State.

McCallister lettered in 1978, 1979 and 1980 at tackle and guard for the Midshipmen, leading Navy to a 24-11 record over those three years and berths in the Holiday (1978) and Garden State (1980) bowls. Navy also won the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy in 1978 and 1979. McCallister, who was a co-captain in 1980, was named an Honorable Mention All-American as a junior by the Associated Press and was named a Third-Team All-American by that same organization as a senior. McCallister was also a two-time First-Team All-East selection.

Coach McCallister, a retired Marine Corps pilot, has been coaching football at Bishop Ireton for four years, including three as the associate head coach.

Cardinals Survive 2d Half to win home opener, 20-18

Of all the positives coming into Ireton’s 2009 football campaign, two veteran quarterbacks have to be high on any list.  When Mike Larrabee was sidelined after a big hit, senior Oliver Noon stepped easily to the helm to guide the Cardinals to a 20-0 halftime lead enroute to a hard fought 20-18 win at Fannon Field Friday afternoon.  After a scoreless first quarter, the Cardinals got untracked behind Noon with a 19-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to Tommy Kestermann  The play of the game occurred shortly thereafter.

With Lion freshman quarterback Timothy Brady again leading Carroll on a drive to the Ireton 2 yard line, Coach Rich Houchens called for a pass to the flat. Brady tossed 4 TD passes the week before against St Mary’s Ryken, but this time a veteran corner, senior Doug Vines stepped in front of the receiver and took off on a school record 97-yard scamper for a defensive touchdown that made it 14-0 Cardinals when Theo Daubresse added his second PAT.

A second key to the Ireton win was the play of the defense throughout the contest. While the offense tallied twice in the second period, it was the defense led by senior Jay Green, that ultimately saved the day for the cardinal and gold.  Green played havoc all afternoon in the Archbishop Carroll backfield, including causing a fumble, then gathering it in deep in Lion territory. That turnover led to Noon’s second TD pass of the day to senior Dom Puglise, a 12 yarder, to up the lead to 20-0 as the half expired.  The PAT was blocked, a signal for more trouble that lay ahead for the Cardinals in the second half.

Ireton knew Carroll was big, athletic, and talented. They found out that, for the second week in a row, they also are not quitters.  After a 65-yard kickoff return, the Lions went right to work and quickly put their first point on the board when Carroll’s Thompson dashed untouched into the endzone from 8 yards out.  Carroll’s defense stiffened and the teams traded punts into the fourth quarter. Miscues by the Lions crippled their comeback attempt, however, with a fumble on a punt and a key roughing the punter penalty giving new life to the Cardinals in the second half when the offense struggled with the bigger Lion defense.

It was another Ireton miscue however, that put Carroll back in the game early in the final quarter. With the Cardinals inside the Carroll 5 yard line, the fourth down field goal appeared to be nearly automatic for Daubresse. But Maryland-bound linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu was through the line almost as fast as the snap and for the second time Ireton had a place kick blocked. This time Attaochu scooped up the bouncing pigskin and turned a possible 17-point lead into a 20-12 nailbiter. Momentum had clearly swung to the green and gold-clad visitors.

Senior punter Kevin Galloway kept the Lions on a longer field with booming punts and the defense clung doggedly to the lead. As the offense struggled to gain yards and burn clock, Carroll’s Brady broke free for the Lion’s third TD, a 28-yard dash to the east endzone. When the Carroll attempt for a two-point conversion fell short, the near capacity crowd roared its approval or possibly relief.  There was still time on the clock and it was left to the Green and the defense. When the Alexandria school got the ball back, the stadium watched anxiously as the clock slowly ticked down. With still another punt, the Cardinals appeared to be in trouble. But a costly Carroll miscue, the roughing the kicker penalty gave Ireton new life. Nothing proved easy for the Cardinals however, and with six seconds on the clock, quarterback Mike Larrabee tripped backpedalling in an attempt to run out the clock on 4th down, giving Carroll one last shot with :01 remaining in the contest and half the field in front of them.  When Brady’s final attempt fell incomplete, the Cards’ bench rushed onto the field, realizing they barely survived Carroll’s comeback.

Bishop Ireton (1-0) looks to avenge last year’s loss to Riverdale Baptist when they  visit Fannon Field Saturday at 2pm. The Crusaders (1-1) were drilled by DeMatha Saturday 38-0 after an opening season win.  Archbishop Carroll (1-1) takes on Landon next weekend.
