Cardinals’ Clara Boggs drove in 6 runs in the Ireton win at Holy Cross on Tuesday.

Cardinal bats awoke with a vengeance today as the Cardinal hitters showed little mercy at Holy Cross. Cardinal batters delivered 18 hits on the day and scored 18 runs to only 2 for Holy Cross. Clara Boggs led the team in RBI’s today with a whopping six RBI’s. Erin Rockwell knocked in five runs while scoring four herself. Erin rapped two triples and two singles going 4/5 on the day.Vivian Gray had a banner day going 3/4 with 3 RBI’s. Avery O’Connor crushed a pair of doubles knocking in 2 runs. Senior Captain Katie Reilly and catcher Emma Klein each had one RBI.

Cardinal hurler Erin Rockwell was dominant in the circle allowing only 2 Holy Cross hits and one earned run in the game. Erin struck out 10 Holy Cross batters along the way and issued but a single walk.
Vivian Gray had a career day going 3/3 plus a walk and rapping two singles and a double in the game. Vivian logged 3 RBI’s and nabbed a stolen base for the Cards as well. She scored 4 runs herself in the game. Avery O’Connor pounded 2 doubles and had a walk getting on base in three of her four at bats. Avery had 2 RBI’s on the day.
With the end of the season and post season play just around the corner, it is indeed an opportune time for the Cardinal bats to be getting hot, the defense to be playing with great efficiency, and the pitching to be strong.
Cardinals head to Arlington for a 4pm date with Bishop O’Connell before returning home for a senior day meeting with the Tartans of Holy Cross on Thursday.

Softball Cardinals edged by St Johns, 1-0

Junior OF Vivian Grays warms up before action during her first varsity softball season.

Junior OF Vivian Grays warms up before action during her first varsity softball season.

Usually in softball when a defense plays flawlessly and your pitcher throws a 3 hitter… you win. Well, that’s usually. Today however, the opponents defense played flawless softball as well and their pitcher threw a 4 hitter. When the pitching duel was over… both teams left the field with the satisfaction that they had fought the good battle.

St John’s scored what would be the only run scored in the game in their home first inning. From that point on it was both the pitching and the defense that dominated the game. From the second inning to the end of the game neither team could put a base runner beyond first base. The defenses handled everything hit their way. There were no errors in the game by both teams.
While the Cardinals out hit St Johns 4-3, the St Johns pitcher managed to scatter her hits through the game. St Johns had managed to get 2 consecutive hits in the first inning which was all they needed.

Bishop Ireton and DeMatha cleared the rained-out earlier game with a doubleheader in Riverdale, Maryland, Saturday and the Stags took both ends of the affair, 15-1 in the opener and 6-4 in the nightcap.

The home team surrendered a first inning run to the Cardinals when senior Ryan Scott drove in Chandler Wilder.  DeMatha bounced back against freshman Brett Kelly in the home half of the opening frame for five runs. They added five more in the second before the game settled into a scoreless struggle, the Stags administering the knockout with five more in the sixth inning to win it by 10-run rule.

Ireton’s Kyle Guzik took the hill for Bishop Ireton in the nightcap.  Once again, Ireton struck early, plating three in the first while DeMatha answered with a pair in the bottom  of the first. The Cardinals got one back in the top of the second, but DeMatha scored three more in the home half of the second to go ahead 5-4. They added an insurance run in the sixth and blanked the Cardinals for the win.

Senior Ryan Scott, the redbirds leading hitter, was 4 for six on the day and drove in a pair of runs. The lanky catcher is hitting .368 to pace Ireton this season.

Junior Kelly Larkin had a big game scoring against O’Connell as the Cardinals continue to roll up the wins. Cardinals have three big games to end the regular season this week.

The Bishop Ireton girls’ lacrosse team continued to show how much their hard work on and off the field over the past year has paid off with three big Washington Catholic Athletic Conference victories in five days last week. The Cardinals overwhelmed the visiting St. John’s College Cadets 15-4 on Tuesday, April 21, at Fannon Field; got by the Holy Cross Tartans 13-8 on Wednesday, April 22, at Fannon Field; and dominated the Bishop O’Connell Knights 18-7 on Friday, April 24, in Arlington, VA.

Ireton ran into a stubborn opponent against the Holy Cross Tartans, but nevertheless led 9-3 at halftime, and managed to assert themselves during key moments when it counted down the stretch in the second half. The Cardinals had problems with the draw control in the second half and also committed an unusually high 15 unforced errors during the game. Leading the offense were Mathews with 5 goals; Sofield with 3 goals, 3 assists; Marshall with 2 goals, 1 assist; Larkin with 2 goals; and Duperrouzel with 1 goal. Leading the defensive effort were Cole with 7 saves, 3 ground balls; and Kaitlin Luzik with 5 ground balls, 6 caused turnovers.

The Cardinals finished the week by visiting the Knights in Arlington, on Friday. Bishop O’Connell played inspired lacrosse early in the game, kept it close, and only trailed 8-5 at halftime. Ireton broke loose in the second half, shutdown the Knights’ offense, and unleashed a withering barrage of goals to take home the win. Larkin led the offensive punch with 5 goals, 2 assists; Sofield got 4 goals, 3 assists; Mathews had 3 goals, 5 assists; Duperrouzel scored 3 goals; Marshall got 2 goals; and Luzik had 1 goal. Cardinals’ lacrosse handle 3 opponents, prom in busy weekend

TSA tries to slow down the Cardinals, but no luck as the team made the flilght, snared a pair of hard-earned wins, and returned to classes Monday.

TSA tries to slow down the Cardinals, but they had no more luck than the Cardinals’ opponents as the team made the flilght, snared a pair of hard-earned wins, and returned to classes Monday.

The Cardinals bounced back from their first defeat of the season last week by winning their next three games in convincing fashion: 15-1 at WCAC foe Elizabeth Seton on Thursday, April 16; 15-3 vs. Manheim Township (PA) in Georgia at the Legacy Cup on Saturday, April 18; and 14-8 vs. Milton (GA) on their home field during the Legacy Cup on Saturday, April 18.

On Thursday, Ireton dominated Elizabeth Seton from the first draw to the final buzzer. While 12 different Cardinals scored goals or notched assists, the only Seton goal was on a free position shot late in the second half.

On Friday, the Cardinals had a full, hard practice in the early afternoon and then many players went to Bishop Ireton’s prom that night.

Early Saturday morning, the whole team caught a flight to Atlanta and essentially went straight to their 2:00 p.m. game at the annual Legacy Cup in suburban Milton, Georgia.

The weather-shortened game against Manheim Township was declared over by officials with about eight minutes left due to very threatening weather conditions in the area. The Cardinals were understandably a bit “sluggish” early in this game, but led 11-2 at halftime. Overall they again took care of business in a convincing manner by dominating their opponent on both ends of the field. Eight different Ireton players scored goals or got assists during this victory.

The marquee game of the Legacy Cup at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday was against a nationally-ranked Milton squad that has won the Georgia state high school championship for the past seven straight years. They have also beaten Bishop Ireton the past three years—in 2014 by a score of 12-10 in Milton; in 2013 by a 12-11 margin in Milton; and in 2012 at Fannon Field by a 12-9 score.

Early the Cardinals on Saturday night Milton controlled draws and exploited the Cardinals’ defensive lapses. Leading by a narrow 6-5 at intermission, Bishop Ireton rebounded with what is becoming a their trademark, a strong second half. They began to clearly dominate draw controls, time of possession, and just ran out the clock the latter part of the game after seizing an insurmountable lead. Once again, eight different Ireton players got either goals or assists in a well-balanced scoring attack that Milton frustrated the home team.

During this 53-hour marathon 15 different members of the Bishop Ireton girls’ lacrosse team scored goals or got assists as follows (no particular order): Charlotte Sofield—6 goals, 8 assists; Madison Mote—1 goal, 2 assists; Kaitlin Luzik—2 assists; Christine Macey—2 goals; Grace Fletcher—2 assists; Kelly Mathews—8 goals; Kayla Marshall—5 goals, 2 assists; Maggie Lohrer—1 goal; Lizzie Lohrer—1 goal; Kate Carney—1 goal; Lexi Ledoyen—5 goals; Kelly Larkin—8 goals, 5 assists; Kayla Duperrouzel—4 goals, 2 assists; Brittany Dolan—1 goal; and Megan Cunningham—1 goal. Goalie Amelia Cole got 11 total saves over these three games.

Bishop Ireton has scored 169 goals so far this season (an average of 14.08 per game) while allowing only 73 total goals (an average of 6.08 per game).

The Cardinals are now 11-1 overall, 3-0 in the WCAC. Ireton has three conference games this week—at home on Tuesday, April 21, 4:00 p.m., versus WCAC opponent St. John’s College; at home on Thursday, April 23, 4:00 p.m., versus WCAC rival Holy Cross; before traveling to Arlington to Msgr McMurtry Field, home of WCAC foe Bishop O’Connell on Friday, April 24, 4:00 p.m.

Cardinal football players at the NFF annual awards dinner. From left to right, head coach Tony Verducci, Josh Ammon, Drew Smith, Nigel Bullard, and School chaplain, Fr. Edward Bresnehan

Drew Smith, Bishop Ireton’s record-breaking wide receiver, was selected by the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame as the National Capital Region’s top scholar-athlete for 2015.  Smith, along with teammates Josh Ammon and Nigel Bullard, was among 25 nominees feted at a dinner at the Army-Navy Country Club on April 19, 2015.  The National Capital Region Chapter includes more than 125 schools in the District of Columbia, Northern Virginia, and Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties in Maryland.  Smith, one of five student-athletes awarded a $1,000 scholarship, was recognized as the Student-Athlete of the Year and the Chapter’s nominee for the Foundation’s Eastern Region Award.  He becomes the the second Cardinal, first since Andrew Rodriguez in 2008, to be the Chapter’s Eastern Region nominee.  Bishop Ireton is one of only three schools to have student-athletes feted in each of the Chapter’s first nine years.

Drew, who arrived at Bishop Ireton without the benefit of any “organized” football experience, has been a model of excellence and consistency on the field, in the classroom and in the community.  The Foundation scholar-athlete program considers football achievements (40%), academic excellence (40%) and citizenship (20%) in evaluating nominees.  Drew led the Cardinals to the 2014 Virginia Independent School Athletic Association Championship Game, catching a school-record 57 passes for more than 1,000 yards and 16 touchdowns.  He was selected first team all-state and ranked in the top 7 in all wide receiver categories in the Washington Post.  Drew served as a member of the football team’s Leadership Council, was honored as team Most Valuable Player and was a team captain as well.  Drew has maintained a “straight A” academic average throughout his four years at Bishop Ireton, earning the prestigious Marguerite Scafati Academic Award and a host of other academic honors.  He has served as a Kairos leader, serves as an usher at his parish and has served volunteer hours at a senior center and at Christ House in Alexandria.  Drew recently committed to attending Villanova University and playing football for the Wildcats.  He plans to major in Business and Finance.

Josh Ammon and Nigel Bullard, stalwarts on the Cardinal defense in 2013 and 2014, were also honored by the Foundation.  Josh was a two-time All VISAA linebacker, earning first team honors in 2014.  He led the team in tackles for his two years in Alexandria, maintained a grade point average above 3.0 and will attend Hobart – William Smith College next year.  Josh is the Statesmen’s top linebacker recruit.  Nigel Bullard has been an exceptional teammate, defensive end and student since he arrived at Bishop Ireton two years ago.  His 19 tackles against Benedictine in the VISAA championship game were a team high in 2014 and he was honored as a second-team all-state defensive lineman.  Nigel has maintained a grade point average above 3.9 and, like Drew Smith, is a member of the National Honor Society.  Nigel recently decided to attend Penn State University where he plan to major in Biomedical Engineering.

Drew, Josh and Nigel are among fifteen Bishop Ireton football players who have been honored by the National Football Foundation as student-athletes during Coach Tony Verducci’s leadership of the program.
