Girls 3rd, Boys 5th in DC private school swim relays

Defending relay champion girls earn a 3rd in Relay Carnival kicking off the 2014-15 swim season.

The swim and dive meet season began Saturday and the Cardinals recorded a strong start with a dozen teams gathering for the metro private schools annual relay carnival.  The Bishop Ireton girls, defending champions, battled Holy Cross and Good Counsel before finishing third, while the boys were edged by St Albans for 4th place.  Holy Cross won the girls’ event while Georgetown Prep squeaked by Gonzaga for the boys’ crown.

The Ireton girls finished second in four of the eight events while garnering thirds in two others to finish six points behind second place Good Counsel. Emma Klein, Anna Shumate, Anna Fracasso, and Hayley Snell completed the 200 yard medley relay in 2:00.36, good for second place. Ireton grabbed a second in the 200 yard freestyle relay in 1:47.71, just more than a second behind Holy Cross on the performance of Snell, Abigail Grillo, Clara Boggs, and Anney Matlock.

Lori Abbed, Kate Murray, Margaret Virostek, Maddie Sanasack and Angie Arquette Overman won a thrilling second over Good Counsel by .21 seconds in the 200 yard backstroke relay for the redbirds third second-place finish in the meet’s first three events.  Snell, Shumate, Klein, and Grillo completed the 400 yard medley relay in a time of 4:28.03, good for a third place.  Kaitlin Nguyen, Sarah Chopko, Sanasack, Natalie Nguyen, and Grace McCaffrey covered the 200 yard breaststroke relay in a 2:29.38 for a fifth place.

Ireton earned a third in the longest distance relay, the 500 yard freestyle, in a 5:11.87.  Carrying the Cardinals were Abbed, Boggs, Matlock, Fracasso, and Natalie Nguyen.  Julianne Sampaio joined Abbed, Fracasso, Matlock, and Sanasack in the 4th place finish in the meet’s 200 yard butterfly. The girls covered the distance in 2:09.73, just .03 behind third place National Cathedral School. The meet’s final event, the 400 yard freestyle relay was another thriller, with Holy Cross denying Ireton the final six points that would propel them into a second place tie when they nosed out Klein, Boggs, Shumate, and Grillo for the win in just .5 of a second.

The Cardinals’ boys team scored in seven of the eight relays enroute to a 5th place finish, but suffered a disqualification in the 200 yard breaststroke relays. AJ Salvatori, Jared Steen, Jimmy Grant, and Michael Morrison turned in a 1:48.99 time in the opening relay, the 200 medley, good for a 4th place.  Junior Sam Price replaced Steen in the 200 free relay and their 1:35.54 performance was good for a third behind Prep and Gonzaga.  Grant, Price, Steen and senior Dylan Louison snared a 5th place in the 400 medley.  The Cardinals earned another 5th in the 200 backstroke behind a strong effort from Jermaine Thompson, Jeffrey Reichelt, Edward Crandall, and Carter Rostron in a time of 2:05.18.

Price, Steen, Louison, and Grant recorded a time of 4:12.01 in completing the 400 medley relay. The 500 freestyle relay saw Reichelt, Louison, Thompson, Rostron, and Sam Holcomb earn a 6th place in a time of 5:13.62 while Peter Smearman joined Rostron, Thompson, and Louison to claim a 5th in the 200 butterfly relay. The meet’s final event, the 40o freestyle saw Salvatori, Steen, Morrison, and Price race to a 4th place for the Cardinals in a time of 3:35.98.

Bishop Ireton falls short in state title quest, 23-7

Cardinals' defense played one of their best games in the championship Saturday.

Bishop Ireton stood toe-to-toe with the top-ranked Benedictine Cadets for three quarters in the VISAA championship thanks to a bend-but-don’t-break defensive effort Saturday before a paid crowd a 1,533.  But the fourth quarter saw a pair of Cardinal miscues doom their title hopes in a 23-7 setback to the host Cadets.

The teams struggled through a scoreless first quarter, neither team able to threaten. The opportunistic Cardinal defense garnered the game’s first turnover when Bernie Hayes III recovered a fumbled snap near midfield.  Ireton, who struggled throughout the game offensively, could not capitalize on the field position, but did pin the home team deep in their end on an Andrew Latrash punt.

When the Cardinals forced Benedictine into a fourth down on their own 10, Cadets’ Coach Greg Lilly pulled a fake punt out of the playbook. Ireton wasn’t fooled and stopped the punter at the line of scrimmage. It took 9 plays and pair of penalties, but Joe Dickinson found his top receiver, Drew Smith one more time at 8:19 of the second quarter with a 7-yard slant for a touchdown and the visitors grabbed a 7-0 lead.

Benedictine countered immediately and capped their long scoring drive with a 22-yard TD pass from Scott Bracey to Ramon Jones, who gathered the pass near the line of scrimmage and sprinted by the Cardinals into the end zone at 4:54 left in the half.  Junior Alex Duke picked off Bracey in the Cadets’ last drive of the half,  but the Cardinals were intercepted on their subsequent drive and the teams went to intermission tied, 7-7.

Neither team could score in the third act of this championship play and the game entered the final period still deadlocked.  The Cadets put a potential third period scoring drive together but once again penalties cost the home team and the field goal attempt from 37 yards was wide.  But there was trouble ahead for the Cardinals in the final stanza.

A 22-yard field goal capped Benedictine’s 4th quarter scoring drive with 9:44 remaining in the ballgame. It was the beginning of a nightmare for the visitors over the next five minutes of the game. Following the ensuing kickoff, on third and five, David Plot picked off a Dickinson aerial intended for Ryan Verducci and raced 30 yards for a touchdown. Suddenly, the Cardinals were staring at a 16-7 deficit as a bad snap foiled the Cadets’ PAT with 8:49 remaining to play.

Ireton’s next series ended on the second play from scrimmage when Perris Jones lost the handle after a five-yard gain and Benedictine’s Graham Flinn scooped up the ball and scurried to the visitor’s 8 before being run out of bounds with 8:21 left. Two plays later, Bracey bulled his way in from the one yard line and Jake Waldrop’s PAT  made it 23-7 with 7:37 left for the Cardinals to work.

Ryan Scott snared a long toss from Dickinson to get Ireton down to the Benedictine 29, but the Cardinals’ drive stalled and the Cadets took over on downs at their own 25.   They would chew up the remaining 4:39 with a drive of sweeps and passes that carried them to the Ireton  6 yard line as the contest ended.

For the Cardinals (8-4), it was their first trip to the title game since the 2007 season.  Coach Verducci, in his post game comments, praised the team for the way they competed in the championship and all throughout the season.  He challenged them to make this the start of a strong run of success and not the end of a good season.

VISAA championships conclude Cross Country season

Isabelle Wilcox led the Cardinals over the challengingWoodberry Forest course Friday.

Friday at the Virginia Independent Schools Championship which was held at the Woodberry Forest School in Orange, Virginia.

Woodberry’s course, known for its hilly, rolling course, served as a fitting end for the season as many Ireton harriers ran their best races despite windy conditions.

The boys squad had the benefit of toeing the start line first and it was junior Thomas Ward leading the Cardinals once again through the finish. Thomas finished in a time of 18:32 which was good enough for 36th place. Rounding out the boys top seven were juniors Aaron Ault, David Fernandez, Steve Sisel, freshmen Chris Gaietto, Will Olson, and junior Chris App. The boys team fought hard and placed 15th out of 21 teams.

In the girls race, there was a new face leading the Cardinals through miles two and three as junior Isabelle Wilcox was the first finisher for Ireton across the line. Isabelle finished tenth overall in a time of 20:54 and was followed close behind by junior Maggie Lohrer who finished in 21:09. Lohrer took 15th overall in the girls race.

The rest of the Ireton top seven consisted of freshman Lizzie Lohrer, junior Maggie Mildrew, senior Kaitlin Luzik, sophomores Molly Nealon, and Megan Cunningham. Despite missing one of their top five runners in Natalie Irwin, the ladies still finished a respectable 8th place out of 16 teams.

Some notable honors from this season include the following athletes: Junior Thomas Ward earned first team All State Catholic and first team All City of Alexandria honors. Freshman Lizzie Lohrer earned first team All State Catholic honors. Junior Isabelle Wilcox earned first team All State Catholic, All City of Alexandria, WCAC, and VISAA honors. Junior Maggie Lohrer earned first team All State Catholic, All City of Alexandria, WCAC, and VISAA as well. Maggie Lohrer also won this season’s City of Alexandria Championship race.

Volleyball campaign ends in state playoffs

Stephanie Cabrera (left) and Erika Cabot (right) leap to block in WCAC match at Holy Cross.

After missing the state playoffs in 2013, the 2014 Cardinals returned to the VISAA volleyball  tournament as a number seven seed. The matchup with number two Cape Henry Collegiate was a tall order for the Alexandria school, but Coach Kathy Gutmann was proud of the effort in a 3-0 setback in Virginia Beach.  The loss ended Bishop Ireton’s 2014 campaign.

The Cardinals started strong from the opening serve, tied 11-11 in the first set before the favored Dolphins (23-4) put a run together and never looked back in the 25-15 first set victory.  They followed with a 25-9 win in set two and continued in the third set to again prevail by a 25-11 count.  Cape Henry’s Kristina Smith was dominant at the net, finishing with 20 kills to lead the Dolphins.  The hosts advanced to the semifinals against PVI.

Ireton finished the campaign 16-15. Playing without first team  all WCAC player, Stephanie Cabrera, the Cardinals missed her important contributions.  Sophomore Connor Wood played a strong defensive game for visiting redbirds. “We played to the best of our ability. With over 500 kills for this season sidelined with injuries, we were not at full strength, but there was no quit in our team.  Cape Henry is a very, very good team.” said coach Kathy Gutmann.

Rematch sends Cardinals to the ‘ship, 26-0

Ryan Scott (4) made a spectacular catch to set up the Cardinals deep in JPG territory.

With a berth in the VISAA state football championship on the line, Bishop Ireton made their case emphatically that their number two ranking was well deserved with a 26-0 whitewash of number three seeded St John Paul the Great on Fannon Field Saturday.

It was a perfect football Saturday and a paid crowd of more than 1,000 fans invaded  Fannon Field to see the Arlington diocese’s newest high school rivalry unfold on a playoff stage, one week after the Dumfries school earned its first ever Division I playoff invitation at the expense of the Cardinals.

For the second week in a row the Cardinals grabbed the early lead, this time on an 18-yard touchdown toss from senior Joe Dickinson to Drew Smith. David Cooper’s PAT made it 7-0 with 4:29 left in the first period.

The story this weekend, however, was the strong play of the defense. Throughout the game the Cardinals, who gave up 35 points to Wolves a week earlier, would give up less than a yard on three different critical situations. And, turnovers were a defensive specialty, intercepting passes, recovering fumbles. The special teams set up the first score with a fumble recovery of their own.

With :33 remaining in the opening period, sophomore Perris Jones capped Ireton’s second score, a 53-yard drive when he ran off tackle 6-yards to give the Cardinals 13-0 advantage.  A penalty on the PAT pushed the ball back, Cooper was wide left on a the equivalent of a 35-yard field goal attempt.

Ireton would add 10 more points in the second quarter set up by the tenacious defense. The Cardinals stopped John Paul the Great on a 4th and 1 gamble on their own 41 hardline.  Dickinson made that decision costly on the first play from scrimmage when he found Sam Smith down the left sideline and into the end zone.

With time running out in the half, the “hurry up” pace of the offense earned the Cardinals three more points with the kicking of Cooper.  Following a fumble recovery on the Cardinals’ 28, Ireton used the remaining 86 seconds to drive into JPG territory.  With 7.9 seconds left and the Cardinals on the visitors’ 21, Cooper came on and drilled a 39-yard field goal to end the first half.

The Wolves would regroup after intermission but the contest hardly seemed in doubt.  After a scoreless third quarter, Cooper added a 22-yard field goal early in the final period to cap the day’s scoring.  The white-jerseyed visitors played a more efficient offensive game after intermission but were plagued by a pair of turnovers, including a fumble on the Ireton 5 recovered by Chandler Wilder and an interception by Corey Johnson.  The story of the afternoon for the Dumfries school could be seen in their final drive, where a 4th and goal plunge from the one yard line barely made it back to the line of scrimmage.

The win extended the Ireton season to a 12th game, this one another rematch with top seeded Benedictine. The Cadets rallied from a 15-14 halftime deficit to race past St Christopher’s in the state’s other semifinal.  The Cardinals will travel to Richmond to battle in the championship game for the first time since the 2007 season.  The regular season meeting at Bishop Ireton was a thriller on homecoming, the visiting Cadets claiming a 29-26 win.  Admission to Saturday’s VISAA championship game is $10.

Cardinals fall short at St John Paul the Great, 35-28

Cold and gray –  described the weather, described the result as three costly second half turnovers and untimely penalties were more than the VISAA second-ranked Bishop Ireton could overcome in a 35-28 setback in Dumfries Saturday in the regular season finale for both squads. But it was part of a chaotic weekend in Division I VISAA football, one that saw the Cardinals upset, number 3 Collegiate School ousted from the playoffs by St Christophers, who earned a number 4 with their victory. Benedictine held serve with a win at home that sidelined #4 Liberty Christian Academy and opened the door for St John Paul the Great to claim a number 3 seed at the tourney to begin Saturday. And, to twist the story further, the Wolves will travel to Alexandria for a rematch with the Cardinals.

The game opened with Bishop Ireton driving 80 yards on the strength of sophomore Perris Jones rushing the ball and quarterback Joe Dickinson effectively tossing to Drew Smith and finally Brenden Peifer for 23 yards for the game’s first touchdown. A rare miss of the PAT left Ireton leading 6-0 at the 9:40 mark of the opening quarter. St John Paul the Great, however, responded with the single wing offense, one predicated on deception, misdirection, and counters.  The Wolves executed the plan to near perfection and methodically drove 70 yards, aided by a Cardinal penalty on 4th down, culminating with a one-yard run by Michael Horan, the first of two he would score on the afternoon. The contest moved into the second period with the Wolves again threatening, leading 7-6.  Junior Michael Foster dashed for 20 yards on the drive and Horan would again find pay dirt, this time on an 8-yard scamper. With 10:44 remaining in the opening half, the hosts had opened a 14-6 advantage. After the Cardinals gambled, and failed, on 4th and 1 on their own 28-yard line, the Wolves would quickly capitalize on their opportunity with Brandon Perroots pushing up the middle one yard for JPG’s third rushing touchdown of the half with 6:56 remaining until intermission. Ireton would be forced to punt on their next possession, but safety Chandler Wilder picked off a home team aerial near midfield and this time Dickinson and company went to work.  Less than a minute remained until halftime, but it was enough time for Dickinson to toss to Sam Smith, then picked up 20 to Peifer getting Ireton to the 21. Back to well, Dickinson found Peifer one more time over the middle and lanky senior dragged a pair of tacklers into the end zone  with :27 seconds to spare and the visitors had narrowed the lead to 21-13.

St John Paul the Great didn’t buckle coming out in the third quarter, however, and promptly drove 75 yards in their opening series of the second half, with Perroots lugging the ball the final yard for the score. It was Horan’s 71-yard sweep around the left end that capped the drive for the Wolves, who were ahead 28-13 with little more than 3 minutes gone in the third. And things were about to darker before the Cardinals mounted a furious comeback. Michael Nguyen snared a tipped Ireton pass over the middle and the Wolves again had the ball in great field position at the Ireton 45.  Moments later, the home team’s apparent touchdown pass was called back due to a penalty and rather than ballooning their lead to 35-13, the Wolves faced a second down and more than 20 yards.  The drive stalled and the Cardinals’ offense were back on the field at their own 21. Following a penalty, Dickinson found Peifer once again down the sideline for a 60-yard touchdown, his third of the day.  A tricky 2-point conversation shovel pass from the holder, Andrew Latrash, to Alex Duke narrowed the Ireton deficit to 28-21 with with 4:08 left in the third.

The Cardinals were just getting warmed up. A short, bouncing kickoff was recovered by Ireton at the JPG 30-yard line. After an incomplete pass, Perris Jones took a handoff going right, cut back, stutter-stepped, and then outraced the Wolves’ secondary 30-yards for another Ireton touchdown 16 seconds after Peifer had scored. David Cooper’s PAT suddenly tied the game at 28-28 and momentum seemed to wear a white jersey. The Cardinals soon had the ball again, looking to regain the lead, but a fumble ended the Ireton drive as the third quarter drew to a close, though not before the Wolves returned the favor when Horan’s pass was intercepted by Josh Ammon.  Ireton could not capitalize on the opportunity and turned the ball over on down at the JPG 46. The visitors’ defense rose to the challenge and forced a punt with just over 9 minutes remaining in the contest, only to see the third turnover of the afternoon prove to be one of the costliest.  With the Wolves recovering the ball on the Ireton 18, the home team pushed the ball into the end zone, Perroots regaining the advantage for John Paul the Great with just under 8 minutes remaining in the struggle. Bishop Ireton’s last best chance followed. With Aaron Speight rushing for good yardage and Dickinson tossing a long pass to Drew Smith, the Cardinals were poised to score first and goal on the Wolves’ six-yard line.  Four consecutive times the Cardinals battered the John Paul middle but could get no closer than the 2-yard line and turned the ball over on downs with 4:57 on the clock. The home team avoided a safety on two consecutive rushing plays before tossing for some breathing room and making a critical first down. The Cardinals finally forced a punt, but with the ball rolling dead on the visitors’ 30 yard line, it was a too far with only :36.9 left on the clock.  DJ Stefonsky intercepted Dickinson’s final pass attempt of the afternoon and the ballgame was over. St John Paul the Great improved to 7-3 and earned the rematch in Alexandria on Fannon Field with Bishop Ireton (7-3) in the VISAA’s semifinal match up.     Benedictine will host St Christopher’s in Richmond with the winners of these semifinals meeting on November 15th at the site of the higher seeded team.  Gametime is tentatively set for 1pm. Admission is $10/person and no passes or student ID passes will be honored for this state playoff contest.
