Boys’ Soccer advances to “final four” in WCAC soccer

Matt Breiner (14) has been one of a group of young players that have flourished in WCAC play this season.

In the start of the “second season” for the Cardinal, the Bishop Ireton soccer team were matched up against the Falcons of Good Counsel in a 4 vs 5 WCAC Quarterfinal match-up.

During the regular season in Olney the teams ended 2-2 and shared the points.  The regular season match-up reminded the Redbirds of a game they should have finished off and now had their second chance in the playoffs.

With a change in lineup due to a few injuries, the white clad Ireton came out working the ball around the field and switching fields keeping the Falcons chasing the ball early.

Good Counsel would get into the Ireton box and, instead of the goalkeeper Matt Poling, it was the center back and elder Paul Poling that came storming out of his own 18 yard box with the ball.  Poling played a clever ball to Joey Faddoul who was occupying the middle of the space and Faddoul did the rest, driving straight down the park to finish and put Ireton up a goal.
The second half would see Good Counsel make some tactical changes and begin to work on getting a goal back as their mentality was also in the “win or go home” mindset.  Faddoul received ball on the outside of the box and cut into what seemed like a ball to be crossed on the ground, but as any good striker will say he “meant” to shoot and found the back of the net on a very acute angle to increase the lead 2-0.

However, the win was not in hand and history began to repeat itself.  Good Counsel found some success on their left side of the field, opening up for a Good Counsel player to finish their chance when presented and drew one goal back to make it 2-1.  As the clock struck the 70 minute mark and the final ten minutes came, history seemed to be repeating itself as the Good Counsel striker and center back Poling became tangled in the box.  The assistant referee deemed Poling to be the aggressor and the head referee pointed to the spot awarding Good Counsel a penalty kick.  Good Counsel calmly finished their PK and a carbon copy of two weeks earlier in Olney was developing.

Good Counsel’s only error in scoring with 5 minutes from regulation meant that Coach Norem’s side had a chance to show they did not want extra time or penalty kicks.  Matthew Breiner was played in to the GC defensive third causing the GC defenders to take him down a little over 20 yards outside the 18 yard box.

As the wall began to set itself Faddoul made sure he was free to take the direct free kick when he was ready to pull the trigger.  Faddoul looked up and picked his spot bending over the wall and finished with a beautiful bending free kick that would harp the phrase “Bend it like Faddoul.”  In what wa a full team effort, Ireton seniors came off the bench and provided a strong finish to closing out the game and when the final whistle sounded the mission was achieved, survive and advance.

The Cardinals now take flight to Hyattsville for a match up with regulars season champions DeMatha for a spot in Saturday nights WCAC Championship match.  Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30.  Win or lose, the Cardinals must face an opening round opponent for the VISAA tourney, as #12 seeded St Annes, Belfield calls on 5th-seeded Bishop Ireton at 3:45 Friday on Fannon Field.  Admission to this VISAA playoff game is $5 for ALL fans.

WCAC selects Boys’ Soccer all Conference team, Coach

Senior Nick Ducceschi (7) was one of 7 Cardinals recognized by the WCAC coaches in voting for post season awards.

For the second time in three years, Coach Jon Norem was selected the WCAC’s coach of the year and three of his players joined him on the first team, all conference squad.

Senior Nick Ducceschi, and juniors Preston Haugh and Joey Faddoul were selected by the Conference’s head coaches to the WCAC’s first team list. Junior Patrick Reilly was named to the league’s second team, all conference squad and  Paul Poling, Kyle Delaney, and Gabby Sampaio were recognized as honorable mention winners for Bishop Ireton.

The team entered the extremely balanced WCAC final week of the regular season in second place and saw a one goal loss plunge the Cambridge Road school from a second into a fourth place situation.

Bishop Ireton soccer seniors go out with a win, 5-0

The 2014 Cardinals have a 21st century high of 12 wins in the regular season and a 4th seed in the upcoming WCAC tourney, a 5 seed in the VISAA brackets.

In a non-conference tilt on Fannon Field, Ireton played host to the Mustangs of Bishop McNamara.  This match allowed the team and school to honor its senior players during a half time senior day ceremony in which senior parents accompanied their young men to midfield to be recognized by the Fannon Field faithful.

However the class of 2015 would honor their team by leading the scoring efforts on the field.  Jeremy Guillaud opened the scoring, cleaning up a loose ball in front of the Mustang net with a opportunistic finish.  Henson Webre, another senior, would put the Cards up two nil.

In the second half underclassmen Matt Breiner and Joey Faddoul would put goals three and four on the board, with senior Josh Estevez adding an assist to Faddoul’s goal.  This assist for Estevez added to a stellar week in which he was the school’s male recipient of the Catholic Athlete’s for Christ Award winner.  Always reliable teammate Matt Pham would finish off the scoring with a close range rebound finish, ending senior day on high note and sending the Redbirds into the WCAC and VISAA tournaments with nothing but good vibrations.

The Cardinals find themselves seeded #4 in the WCAC tournament, quarterfinals beginning Tuesday, and 5th in the Division I VISAA tournament, with a first round matched slated for Friday.

It’s a challenging lineup for Ireton.  WCAC date with the Falcons on Witter Drive Tuesday, a win likely sends them to top ranked DeMatha on Thursday. Friday the redbirds host #12 St Anne’s Belfield at home with hopes of the big prize awaiting on Saturday night when the WCAC’s championship match is slated for 8pm at the Maryland SoccerPlex stadium.

Monday sees the winner of Ireton-St  Anne’s traveling to Fairfax to tangle with #4 Paul VI.  Coach Jon Norem sees it all as the best possible problem “7 games in 11 days, lads, that’s what we are playing for now.” he shared with the squad. “7 wins and a pair of trophies, that’s the goal!”

Cardinal Boys’ edged in battle for soccer’s number 2 seed

Junior Preston Haugh (10) had a strong season for the Cardinals, and likely will be a key contributor to any post season success.

In a WCAC soccer season that has proven to be laden with parity more then ever, the Paul VI Panthers from Fairfax entered the beltway for a pivotal conference tilt with Cardinals.  PVI came out strong and Ireton answered their characteristically strong start, but both teams soon would face mother nature’swelcome  to the match with a torrential downpour that changed conditions for both squads on Witter Drive’s artificial turf.

PVI sent a early corner kick in that was bobbled by Matt Poling in goal and allowed just enough space for PVI to get on the score sheet early.  Ireton then went on the offensive, creating chances in their offensive third to finally see pay dirt when a PVI defender took down Preston Haugh in the box after some impressive ball control in a tight space. JoeyFaddoul stepped up to the penalty spot and converted to level the score at 1-1.
Just before the halftime whistle, Matthew Breiner played Henson Webre a clever ball that the senior converted to give the Cardinals the lead and momentum going into the second 40 minutes.
This momentum did not last into the second half as PVI came out looking to level the score and after 20 minutes of the second half, the scoreboard showed PVI up 4-2.  Preston Haugh received a ball from Breiner and Haugh did the rest in pulling the Cardinals within one to make the score 4-3.
Ireton would see a couple more quality chances, including a possible foul when Faddoul was taken down in the box.  The whistle sounded and Ireton saw a very competitive match end 4-3 in favor of the visitors.
In a moment of sportsmanship and showing it truly is just a game, both teams met at the center circle to keep a PVI student recently injured and in a coma in their thoughts and prayers and concluded leaving the pitch with the Lord’s prayer.
This game concluded the regular season WCAC schedule for Ireton who fell into 4th place with the setback. Cardinals host #5 Good Counsel on Tuesday at 3:30pm on Witter Drive Field #2 in the quarterfinals of the WCAC championship tournament.

Cardinals cruise to 7th win of the season, 45-7

Cardinals' Joe Dickinson tossed 4 more TD passes Saturday in Ireton's win over Potomac School. Dickinson is among top 4 quarterbacks in Washington Post rankings.

Bishop Ireton’s Cardinals secured a state Division I playoff berth with a convincing 45-7 win on senior day at Fannon Field.  The Redbirds have final regular season meeting with St. John Paul the Great Saturday in Dumfries, one final opportunity to improve their playoff resume before the final seedings are set.

For sixteen seniors, however, the business at hand was a final regular season appearance on Fannon Field on a picture perfect day for football.  The Potomac Panthers arrived in Alexandria riding a 3-game win streak, including a two touchdown victory over Flint Hill School.  The Ireton defense, however, wasted little time establishing themselves as an immovable object for the Panther offense.  That defense shut out the Panthers, with Potomac earning only a special teams score in the second stanza.

After an interception stalled Ireton’s first drive, the Cardinals used a six-play drive to go 70-yards, capped by a 21-yard Joe Dickinson toss to Drew Smith. David Cooper’s PAT made it 7-0 with 5:53 left in the first period.

The home team would strike again early in the second period with Andrew Latrash under center. The workhorse senior powered his way straight ahead two yards for the Cardinals’ second touchdown at 10:20 left in the first half,  a little more than six minutes later, a Latrash toss to Drew Smith, good for 40 yards, would up the margin to 21-0 with just over 4 minutes to play in the opening half.

The second quarter closed with a wild sequence of events. After junior Ryan Verducci broke  a tackle enroute to an 11-yard touchdown, the Panthers returned the ensuing kickoff 70 yards for touchdown to close to 28-7. with 1:21 remaining in the half.   When the ball was stripped following a pass completion, Potomac School was back on offense at their own 45 yard line with 48 seconds left in the half.

The Panthers pulled a trick play out of their playbook and connected on a 35-yard pass down to the Ireton 10 yard line with :08.7 remaining. After some discussion among the officials regarding the legality of the play, a penalty call was reversed and Potomac was set up with a first and goal situation.  Two pass plays were broken up and the Cardinals survived to head to the locker room at 28-7.

Dickinson connected with Drew Smith two more times in the game’s third quarter to set the clock in continuous motion at 42-7.  David Cooper added a 36-yard field goal with under six minutes left in the contest and the Cardinals closed their regular season home schedule with a 45-7 victory.

Bishop Ireton (7-2) captured a share of one of four playoff berths with the win.  The Cardinals close the campaign next Saturday with the Wolves, kickoff is 1pm. A win and Benedictine loss could vault Ireton into the top stop while a loss could drop them as far as to the 4th seed.

Box Score                   1        2        3        4        Final

Potomac School        0       7        0        0          7

Bishop Ireton            7      21       14        3       45

Six Cardinals honored by WCAC in Girls’ Soccer

Junior goalkeeper Amy Krotine (green jersey) was once again returned to the all Conference team, this time the 2014 edition.

The Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) released the 2014 all Conference selections and three Cardinals were on the first team while three more were selected for the honorably mentioned list.

Junior forwards Lilly Weber and Grace Hersey joined goalkeeper Amy Krotine on the all conference first squad.   The fleet footed pair of attackers led Ireton in goal scoring this season, while the tenacious Cardinal goalie was the league’s best.

Three other Cardinals were selected by the Conference’s coaches as worthy of honorable mention. Grace Hamilton, Grace Sklopan, and Laura Mueller were lauded by the WCAC for their play during the 2014 campaign. All three were instrumental in Bishop Ireton’s second place finish, according to Coach Gino Leon. “I am very proud of our first team players, a little disappointed that my honorable mention players didn’t get more support for the second team.  But we will have a chance to make that case on the field in the days ahead.”

The road begins Tuesday when the Cardinals (8-5-3, 5-1-2) face a tough 7th seed in Paul VI, who they edged 2-1 in the conference regular season finale last week. If the second-seeded Alexandria school advances, they will likely host the third-seeded Bishop O’Connell Knights, who host Elizabeth Seton, on Thursday, still stinging from the 4-1 setback on Fannon Field in the regular season meeting of the diocesan rivals.  The championships are set for Saturday, November 1st at 6pm in Boyds, Maryland. The title match will be held at the main stadium of the Maryland SoccerPlex.  Admission is $10 per person.

Tennis triumphs on senior day home finale

Bishop Ireton's Emily Owens got a win at number 3 doubles for the Cardinals varsity squad.

Coach Katie Sloper-Johnson’s tennis team bounced back from a setback at National Catherdral School last week to upend the Academy of the Holy Cross, 9-0 at the Wakefield Park tennis courts Tuesday.

For the Cardinals, it was a time to bid farewell to six seniors playing their final home match of the regular season.

Number one singles, senior Kirsten Parker battled the Tartans’ Dori Mesmer 8-4, while number two, Stephanie Lin defeated Hania Linderking, 8-1.

Senior Haley McKeen stopped Megan Rumphrey, 8-0, and Casey Jackson dispatched Emmie Strataleis, 8-1, at the number four singles.  Laney Delaney and Elizabeth Todd, at five and six singles respectively, won their matches with Ayaki Nakahaski and Mary Rowedder by identical 8-1 counts.

The Cardinals got an immediate win when their number one doubles team of Parker/Lin won as Mesmer, the introduced half of the Holy Cross doubles pair was forced to retire after her singles match because of a shoulder issue. McKeen and Jackson scored a 8-1 win at number two doubles as did Emily Owens and Delaney, who completed the sweep with a victory at number three doubles.

The Cardinals will make up a rained out meeting with Good Counsel this week on Wednesday and ready themselves for another visit to Olney when they challenge for the upcoming 2014 WCAC tennis championships.
