Volleyball opens season 1-1

Bishop Ireton had a busy first week of school, playing a pair of non conference opponents in Godley Gym.

The Cardinals opened the season with an impressive 3-0 win over Trinity Episcopal School of Richmond Tuesday.   Led by Stephanie Cabrera, the attackers were busy in the sweep.  The opening game was thriller with Ireton pulling away for a 25-21 victory.  Games two and three were more dominating performance by the home team who rolled to 25-11 and 25-14 wins to seal the first match of the year.

Maryland School for the Deaf called on Bishop Ireton Thursday in what has become a traditional early season matchup.  MSD plays the Cardinals tough year in and year out, this was no exception.

In  contest matching strong hitters on both sides of the net, it was the Orioles who prevailed 3-0 to improve to 2-0 on the year.  Ireton fell 23-18 in game one, rallied in the second from a 20-1o deficit before falling 25-23 in game 2, and were swept in the third, again by a 25-18 count.

Both squads attacked aggressively but the Cardinals had as many as six unsuccessful serves during the evening, complicating their efforts against a skilled squad from Frederick, Maryland, who made few unforced errors.

Coach Kathy Gutmann’s squad regroups over the Labor Day weekend and opens WCAC play on Wednesday as the home stand continues, hosting perennial power, Good Counsel. Action begins at 4:30 with JV action and varsity is set for 6pm.

The freshmen Cardinals opened their season with a 2-0 win over JEB Stuart at Godley Gym, while the JV improved to 2-0 with a pair of wins over Trinity Episcopal and MSD.

Field Hockey sets the bar high as 4th season begins

In only the program's fourth year, the Cardinals have set their sights on the top level in the WCAC.

As the field hockey team begins the 2014-2015 season campaign all eyes are on winning a WCAC Championship. A lofty goal perhaps, but one not beyond the Cardinals, according to athletic director, Bill Simmons.

“We have a strong nucleus of players, athletic, confident girls that have tasted success in a relatively short period of time, considering this is only our 4th year of play, the third season in WCAC action. Opponents will overlook this team at own peril I think.”

With 8 returning seniors including starters Kelly Mathews, (2nd Team all WCAC) Hayley Snell, Christine Macey, Rachel Macey and a host of seasoned underclassmen the Cardinals are looking forward to expanding upon last season’s accomplishments.

Leading scorer Grace Fletcher (1st Team all-WCAC) looks to continue her scoring pattern in the Cardinals season opener on the road at St. James High School Thursday, September 5th. Goalie Anna Fracassco ( 2nd team all WCAC-2013) also looks to a leading force in the net. Her record .987 goal save percentage was a key factor in last year’s conference game play.

Following the St. James opener, the Cardinals will entertain rival Bishop O’Connell on Fannon Field in the home debut Monday, September 8th on Fannon Field. Varsity starts the WCAC season at 4pm.

A Commit to Liberty University!

Bishop Ireton is thrilled to have a student who has verbally committed!

Grace Fletcher is a junior and she has recently committed to Liberty University for lacrosse. She is now the eighth person on the BI Girls Lacrosse team to commit to a school. Grace is ecstatic to be part of Liberty’s team and is so far the only lax recruit to this school. Liberty is a Division 1 school and plays against schools like Navy, Elon, High Point, and Costal Carolina.

Although Grace is committed, she still has two years of high school left. In the fall, she plays varsity field hockey to stay conditioned for lacrosse. During the summer, fall, and winter, she does workout with her lacrosse team to get ready for the spring season. Grace also plays for Capital Lacrosse Club that runs from August through July. It was through Capital Lacrosse that Liberty noticed her. They came to some of the same lacrosse tournaments that Grace and her team did and Liberty was interested in her. Grace decided to go and see Liberty’s campus and from the moment she set foot there, she fell in love.”There are some main reason why I fell in love with Liberty,” explained Grace, “They have new facilities, a great community and athletic support, the lacrosse team is improving every day, and they have great coaches who I am looking forward to working with.” The head coach at Liberty is Kelly Nangle and the assistant coaches are Meghan Harkey and Annie McGinley. So far there is only one person there that she knows will be playing with her who will be a senior at the same time she is a freshman.

Grace would lastly like to thank some people for getting her here in her life and making her the person she is today. She would first like to thank her Capital Lacrosse Coach Christina, and then her high school lacrosse coach Rick Sofield. Lastly she would like to thank her parents who have supported her this whole way.

Good luck to Grace in her upcoming school season. Bishop Ireton is looking forward to see her amazing goals and smart playing later this spring.

Brown named Cardinals’ named wrestling head coach

Mr. Kwinten Brown, class of 2005, assumes head coaching responsibilities for one of Ireton's most tradition rich programs.

Bishop Ireton has hired Kwinten Brown as their new varsity wrestling head coach. He succeeds Don Dight, who moved to Thomas Edison High School.  The 2005 graduate of Bishop Ireton remains number 3 on the Cardinals’ list of all time winners in his four years as a grappler.

“I am excited and honored to be selected for this position.” said Coach Brown. “This is one of the School’s most accomplished programs and I plan to work hard to keep it a very successful one. Coach Dight was a great mentor and I think I am prepared for this because of him.”

Brown left Ireton and wrestled collegiately in Bristol, Tennessee, for King University.  The Alexandria native captained the 2009-10 King squad before graduating and returning home to become the assistant athletic director for facilities and transportation.  He also assisted Dight on the Ireton wrestling team.

“”I am excited to have another alumnus become a varsity head coach. But more than that, I am thrilled that we have a coach with the knowledge, experience, and passion for wrestling and Bishop Ireton that Coach Brown brings to the position. There was not a better qualified person for the job.” said the Cardinals’ athletic director, Bill Simmons.

Wrestling begins November 8th for the Cardinals.
