Athletes Honored at Annual Varsity Banquet

Senior Andrew Perham, headed to Clemson nex fall, received the Father George Godley Award as the School's most valuable multi-sport male athlete for 2013-14. Junior Charlotte Sofield was selected for the girls.

Senior Andrew Perham and junior Charlotte Sofield were awarded the Father George Godley Trophy as the outstanding athletes of the year in multiple sports, highlighting an evening of honors at the Hilton Mark Center in Alexandria on May 28th.  Mr. Rick Mondloch, class of 1978, was honored as the Bishop Ireton distinguished alumnus of the year for his work supporting the Cardinals and particularly boys’ basketball.  Awards were presented by Head of School, Dr. Thomas Curry while Mr. Jarrod Wronski again was the evening’s master of ceremonies.

Dozens of most valuable players for each of the School’s 25 varsity sports were recognized as were the team’s Cardinal Award winners, those players whose intangible benefits to the team and their teammates personified what it means to be a Bishop Ireton Cardinal.

Coach Rick Sofield of the girls’ lacrosse team was the selection for coach of the year.  His squad had a record setting campaign in 2014, winning the Virginia Independent Schools Division I championship over the 19-time champions, St Stephens/St Agnes School, upending defending WCAC champs, Good Counsel, 17-7 to earn the School’s first ever girls lacrosse conference title, and ended the year 20-4 and ranked as high as number 5 in many national polls of high school lacrosse.

Moses Webb, head coach of the JV football team was named the Chris Delaware Memorial Award winning assistant/JV head coach of the year.  Coach Webb in his second season, led many new and inexperienced football players through a successful campaign where fun, hard work, and learning came together to spark a close-knit family atmosphere for the boys.

Perham, a first team, all WCAC goalkeeper in soccer and high jumper/800 meter runner for the track team was the School’s winner of the prestigious Godley Trophy while Charlotte Sofield, the lacrosse player of the year in the WCAC, first team, all VISAA, and first team all Met lacrosse player and varsity basketball player was selected for the girls.

The School named its Cardinals of the Year for boys and girls, Darren Roach and Heather Pearson.  The Scholar-Athlete of the Year went to Phillip Thomas and Kendall Cunningham while Spencer Amarantides and Megan Sullivan were recognized as the honorable mention awardees for the prestigious award.  The Father Edward Roszko Spirit Award was presented to Naval Academy-bound Dan Noe.

The manager of the year, recognizing the hardworking but unsung heroes of each team that do so much important work that normally is noticed only when not accomplished, was given to Kellen Phillips, a senior basketball player who managed the boys’ varsity lacrosse team in the spring.

The Service Award is presented annually to a member of the School community who unselflessly contributes their time and effort to improving Bishop Ireton athletics and their individual teams.  The 2013-14 winner was Mrs. Gail Visgauss who  tirelessly supported the varsity football team, wrestling team, boosters, worked within the Clover, College Park civic association to promote the School’s interests and positions within the community.  She was a visible and vocal supporter; most recently  driving students more than a 100 miles to Richmond to cheer on the girls lacrosse team at the state championship game at Collegiate School in May.

Fannon Field Make over nears completion

Workers install the new logo on Fannon Field. The final stages begin this week.

With only days remaining in the final phase of installation, the new Fannon Field already sparkles with the new carpet, sporting bright white football lines and the greenest grass in Alexandria, according to Bishop Ireton’s athletic director, Bill Simmons.  “I am really excited for our athletes and school community to get on this new field. You get an idea how worn our old field was the moment you step into the field area and survey the new turf.”

After months of work by the School’s Board of Govenors, Head of School, Dr. Tom Curry, and the Diocese of Arlington, construction kicked off on May 28th with the demolition of the 11-year old AstroPlay 2000 artificial turf and underlying padding.  The drainage remained intact, workers added stone and laser-graded the sub base to the specifications required for the new FieldTurf Revolution, a 2.25 inch synthetic fiber, anchored with sand and crumb rubber infill.

Removal of the old turf moved quickly despite a spring rain and the base work was completed within a week. Soon rolls of new field arrived and crews begin working as many as 14 hours a day to complete the installation. The center of the field was laid, followed by 5-yard swaths of green bordered by a 4-inch white yard line. Once the field expanded to the football goal lines, new cardinal red end zones were installed, followed by the long rolls of sideline on the north and south sides of the field. Finally the areas behind the football goal posts were laid. Then the detailed work began.

Using shears, much like a barber, technicians began to shear away the green fibers where golden soccer lines, scarlet red girls’ lacrosse lines, navy blue boys’ lax lines, and field hockey markings were to be inlaid. Stencils outlined the football yard lines and each hashmark on the football field was painstaking sheared out and white hashes glued into the carpet.

The biggest installation challenges, however, were the new center logo featuring the School’s athletic logo, and the golden lettering in each end zone were carefully laid out and cut into the field, meticulously measured, sheared, and glued into place.  As the crew, swelling to as many as 20 workers on some days, battled heat and humidity some days, showers on others, labored to complete the inlays, the delivery of sand and crumb rubber signaled the impending start of the final phase, the in fill process.

When all the inlays are completed, crews will use large sweepers to brush the 2.25 inch fibers upright and begin infilling the carpet with a sand base to anchor the turf in place. Once the base is established, a crumb rubber and sand mix will provide the firm, fast surface that will cushion the athletes while giving them a world class surface to play on.

“This is going to fun for everyone, I think our community will be proud of Fannon Field. The installers are excited about how great it looks, and we know it’s going to be a hit with our athletes and physical education students.” offered the Cardinals’ athletic director.  Weather will impact the final completion date, but School officials hope to see the girls lacrosse camp and football clinic to be on the new grass before the end of the week of June 23rd, less than a month from when workers broke ground.

Washington Post picks Cardinals #1 in Girls’ Lacrosse

Bishop Ireton's girls lacrosse team added a #1 finish in the Washington Post's season-ending poll to cap another "first" for the program in it's fourth season under Coach Rick Sofield.

Another accolade for the historic season of Bishop Ireton’s girls’ lacrosse team (20-4) as the Washington Post ranked the Cardinals number 1 for the 2014 season.  Laxpower, Studentsports.com, and the Nike’s website all place the WCAC and VISAA champs in the #5 position in their final national rankings.   It was the highest finishes for the program ever, indeed, no Ireton program has achieved a Washington Post number 1 final ranking or a top 5 national posting.

Paraphrasing the Post in their announcement of the season-ending top ranking, “the question was never ‘could’ the Cardinals win the WCAC and VISAA championships, but ‘would’ they win? The resounding ‘yes’ propelled them to the top ranking for the first time in School history.”

The team becomes Bishop Ireton’s first ever top-ranked varsity team, their first ever WCAC girls’ lacrosse title as well as first ever Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association championship in girls’ lacrosse. In the process they also recorded their first ever win over neighboring national powerhouse, St Stephens/St Agnes School, 9-7 in the title matchup.

Almost overlooked is the narrow come-from-behind last minute 9-8 win over Collegiate School in the state semifinals on the Cougars home pitch.  But, as the saying goes, close only counts in horseshoes, and the Cardinals rallied again in the second half of the state finals after trailing 4-0 early in the title game to the 19-time state champions to capture their first state crown.

Rose Named Boys’ Lacrosse Coach

New varsity boys' lacrosse coach, Brandon Rose, listens during a meeting with returning players after being introduced to the squad.

Bishop Ireton’s athletic director, Bill Simmons announced the hiring of Brandon Rose as the School’s next varsity boys’ lacrosse head coach.  The Rochester, New York native accepted the position June 9th.

Rose comes to the Cardinals from nearby Episcopal High School where we was the lead varsity assistant coach for the Maroon.  He also teaches physical education at nearby Minnie Howard School in the Alexandria Public Schools.

“Brandon Rose knows the game; he is a teacher, a patient, yet demanding coach, and full of enthusiasm for the game.” said the Cardinals’ athletic director.  The Ithaca College alum was a standout long stick midfield for the Bombers in his college career, holding a career record for ground balls.

Rose told players to expect to work hard but to have fun. He noted he is anxious to begin and encouraged the team to work on stick skills and play lacrosse this summer.
