Cardinal Football Program Prepares for 2010 Season

Head Coach Tony Verducci and his staff are working as hard as their players in preparation for the 2010 season.  The month of July provides all players, from rising freshmen to returning letter winners, with optional supervised activities.  The weight room is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons from 3:00 – 5:30 PM under Coach Joe Blaszkow’s supervision.  Coach Ed Malinowski put players through speed and agility sessions every Wednesday and Thursday evening on Fannon Field from 5:00 – 6:00 PM and the Cardinals take part in a “7 on 7” league at Wakefield High School every Sunday and Tuesday evening between 6:00 and 8:00 PM.

The Cardinals field two teams, a varsity and junior varsity squad.  The varsity roster is filled by competition; there are no restrictions by age or grade.  The junior varsity squad is only open to freshmen and sophomore students.  The majority of Ireton’s freshmen football players have not participated in “organized” football, so head JV coach Harry Busch and his staff focus their efforts on educating and inspiring our younger Cardinals.  Coach Verducci’s varsity staff is renowned for the great experience its members have in football and leadership.  Verducci and his fellow Naval Academy graduates Frank McCallister, Charlie Meyers, Chuck Zingler, Ed Malinowski, and Chris Lepore have all played and coached at the college level.  Coaches Dave England and Derick Carver bring their own military experience to the group along with the aforementioned Navy grads.  Carver is the unit’s first year coach, bringing a love of football along with his own sacrifices as a Wounded Warrior.  Coach Matt Shea has professional and collegiate coaching experience and Coach Blaszkow is an Ireton grad who played college ball at Salisbury.

The season officially kicks off on Tuesday evening, August 10 at 5:30 PM when the varsity players have gear issue as well as strength and conditioning tests.  The JV players will repeat these events on Wednesday evening, August 11 at 5:30 PM.  Both teams will practice at Bishop Ireton until they travel to Front Royal, Virginia (Randolph-Macon Academy) for their fourth annual team training camp from August 15 through 20.

Many rising freshmen have taken part in this summer’s activities, but it is not too late to join in the pride, tradition, and brotherhood that IS Bishop Ireton Football.  Rising freshmen are invited to register for the Football Fundamental Clinic that Coach Shea and Coach Blaszkow will oversee during the week of July 26, 2010 from 5:00 – 8:00 PM.  Contact Coach Verducci at Verducca@bishopireton.org for more information.  Play bold and compete for the Cardinal and Gold!
