In a game that suggested to the casual observer that the Cardinals were dominating the play, a series of tough breaks and calls reversed four apparent Ireton goals and sent the redbirds home with a gut-wrenching 1-0 setback. Meanwhile, The Heights converted its best chance on a redirected free kick that did count as the contest’s only score.
The visiting Cardinals controlled the play of the game for long stretches of day, but when presented an opportunity, the home team took advantage. “It felt like a classic example of beating yourself.” commented assistant coach Zack Bass. The loss dropped the team to 3-4 on the season, 1-1 in WCAC play with a pair of key conference games ahead.
For the Cardinals, St Mary’s Ryken is next up in Leonardtown, Maryland, before Ireton returns to Alexandria on Thursday to host defending WCAC champions, Gonzaga. Both JV and varsity contests kick off at 4pm on the Witter Street Fields.
