Cardinals top Cadets, 1-0, hold second place in WCAC

Nick Ducceschi (7) scored the game's only goal in an important 1-0 WCAC win over St Johns Friday.

It’s been quite a resurgence for Bishop Ireton’s boys soccer program. In the 1980’s the Cardinals were a dominate squad, one of the area’s top high school soccer teams. But as the class of 2014 experienced their first season on Cambridge Road, an 0-12-2 season gave little evidence of the soccer tradition.

As the Cardinals prepare for a critical conference finale, Friday’s  1-0 win over St Johns looms large for the squad that has quietly built an 11-3-2 campaign, 5-1-2 in the WCAC, good for a one point lead in the standings over Good Counsel, who fell to Gonzaga on Friday.

Senior Nick Ducceschi took a pass from sophomore Gaby Sampaio with 11:38 left in the game’s opening half to score the game’s only goal and the determined, skilled group of defenders made it hold up.  The home team dominated time of possession, so while the lead was a tenuous one, the club handled the ball deftly and Matt Poling was equal to every challenge in the goalkeeping position.

With DeMatha sitting at 6-0-2 (20) with a game to play with Bishop McNamara, they have the top spot locked up, by virtue of a win over the second place Cardinals. Bishop Ireton at 5-1-2 (17) is a point better than Good Counsel at 5-2-1, (16) and three better than fourth place Gonzaga with 4-2-2, (14) who visit St Johns on Tuesday. PVI 4-2-1 (13) have a pair of games, Ireton on Tuesday and McNamara Thursday to complete their conference regular season.  In other words, a loss to the Panthers could push the redbirds from second place to as far down as 5th place, if everything fell into place for the other teams in the fray.
