Kyle Delaney struck out six and scattered three hits in a complete game shutout to spur the Bishop Ireton Cardinals to a 2-0 win in seven innings over St. Stephens on Tuesday at St Stephens.
Both ball clubs played a clean, error-free game on the first baseball weather day of the season and the opener for both squads.
Seth Scalsky’s single to right helped the Cardinals break a scoreless deadlock in the sixth inning. The Saints’ B. Frerichs had pitched a strong game for the home team holding the visiting redbirds scoreless through the first five innings on four hits before James Swiger walked to get on base in the sixth. He then went from first to second on a single by Kyle Delaney. Both scored in the pivotal sixth on the Scalsky RBI and a fielder’s choice.
Frerichs was the hard luck loser, walking two, striking out five, and allowing earned two runs.
