DeMatha’s Stags, a preseason favorite to be at or near the top of the WCAC boys’ lacrosse standings, did little to discount the lofty predictions with a convincing 17-1 win on Francis Fannon Field on Monday. It was the season opener for both squads.
As if the weather hadn’t hampered preseason preparations enough, the early season match up with one of hte area’s strongest programs wasn’t the prescription the Cardinals needed as they look forward to an improved 2014 campaign. Indeed, there will be better days ahead for the Cardinals, but Monday it was simply a long afternoon against a tough opponent.
DeMatha, unofficially, was 21 for 22 on faceoffs and held a huge advantage in shots on goal. Cardinal goalkeeper Ryan Verducci was a bright spot for the home team as he opened the game with three quality saves and logged more than a dozen for the game.
Kevin Abbed broke the ice for Ireton with his goal in the third period, one of seven shots the Cardinals launched in the game. Steve Partlow, Michael Begelow, and Dylan Stein all tallied three times for the visiting Stags.
The Cardinals take to the road Thursday when they visit St Andrew’s Episcopal School. Faceoff in the varsity contest is slated for 4pm.
