Bishop Ireton’s swim and dive teams wrapped an impressive 2013-14 swim and dive campaign at the snowy VISAA state championships at George Mason’s Freedom Center in Manassas, Virginia.
The Cardinals saw the girls finish ninth in the state while the boys squad finished 22nd out of 27 schools. Collegiate School of Richmond won the girls Division I title while the all-boys Fork Union Academy claimed the DI boys crown.
Overall, the season was filled with successes, the teams defended their Alexandria City championships once again, both boys and girls won the Northern Virginia Catholic Regional Swim and Dive title. The boys unseated Bishop O’Connell while the girls defended the title they won last winter at the Freedom Center.
Ireton’s girls captured the Washington Private Schools Swim and Dive League (WMPSSDL) Relay Carnival championship to open the season and both squads dominated dual meet competition throughout the campaign, including wins over rivals Paul VI and Bishop O’connell. The boys surprised DeMatha early in dual meet action and overall provided a season full of highlights for the Cardinals.
“Coach Gullickson did a great job this winter and of course, I was thrilled with the way our swimmers performed and proud of how our entire swim community represented Bishop Ireton. I hear often from people throughout the state about what a first class program we have. It is not only a credit to our swimmers and coaches, but also to our parents and supporters, they are the unsung heros that make our meets run smoothly and, frankly, make any of these events like state championships possible.”
The squad put the finishing touch on the season with their end-of-the-year banquet at the beautiful Carlyle Club in Alexandria on Sunday.
