Junior Alex Stipano, above, led Ireton with 17points. She was selected to the honorable mention list for the WCAC in voting by Conference coaches.

Archbishop Carroll, led by first-team, all-WCAC performer Kenyatta Butler’s 20 points, knocked Bishop Ireton out of the 2014 WCAC basketball championship tournament with an 87-53 win in Washington on Thursday night.

The Cardinals opened the game well and battled the Lions to 17-14 after one quarter. As has been a problem often in the season, the second period can be a difficult one for Ireton, and this contest was no exception.   The home team dumped 28 second quarter points on Ireton to race to a 45-24 halftime advantage.

Bishop Ireton steadied out of the locker room in the third stanza as they were outscored 15-12 by the physical Lions,  but the 60-36 count heading into the final period was more than the Cardinals would be able to overcome.

Alex Stipano, an honorable mention awardee in the all conference balloting, led Ireton with 17 points, Isabelle Kendall added 8, Kellen Phillips had 6.  Heather Pearson, Michelle Montgomery, and Cece Leone each scored 5 for the Cardinals.

In addition to Butler’s 20, the Lions got 13 from Daja Conte-Hill and Bianca White while Lyndsey Downing added 10.

For Bishop Ireton (6-24, 0-18) the Cardinals now head to VISAA Division I basketball playoff as an 11th seed where they challenge 6th seeded St Catherine’s in Richmond at 6pm. Winner gets #3 Liberty Christian on Wednesday in Lynchburg.
